I live in a small town with no dedicated music store around, just MalWart and other generic retailers. There's a small city that's a two-hour drive that has a few music store I like to frequent, and they will hold special orders for months. I (hopefully) will be able to go this weekend to pick up some DVDs and a copy of The Sabbath Assembly's "Restored To One" that I ordered back in November.

Not sure...something from Wayside or Squidco though, since there are no good music stores left in Penn State now that City Lights is gone.
It's unfortunate that music stores are all closing down. I can't go to Wal-Mart or Target and find good music that's not brand new and on all the "Nothing But The Hits" radio stations. Whenever my fiance and I go out of town to her parents place in northern California, I always make it a point to go to this place called Rasputin's. They have such a huge selection, new and used, of almost anything you can think of. They even had some Riverside there!
Anyway, the next album I'm going to purchase is narrowed down to probably three albums: Yes' Going For The One, Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother, or PF's The Division Bell.

Don't forget to visit Amoeba (SF, Hollywood and Berkeley) if you get a chance!

City Lights didn't even usually carry what I wanted, but he would order stuff for me without much extra cost, it was an independent store, and it had that perfect "basement album store" atmosphere. Half the time I went in, I didn't even end up getting anything, I just talked to him and some of the other people there about music for a while.
As far as functionality goes, I do prefer internet stores. It's much easier to find what I want online than going store to store to store, and I still get the majority of the satisfaction of getting the album once it finally arrives.
Out of the three albums you mentioned there, I'd recommend Atom Heart Mother by the way - Going for the One is my least favorite Yes album before the poppy years, and Division Bell is my least favorite Floyd so far.

Out of the Yes albums that I wanted to get, Going For The One is the only one I don't have (I have The Yes Album through Relayer), plus I heard snippets of each song and it doesn't sound too bad, but I'll keep that in mind. And when it comes to Pink Floyd, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the biggest Syd Barrett fan, so I usually try and go for the David Gilmour-era albums. Anything recommended for a fan of Yes, Riverside or Sky Architect? I know they all sound different, but that's just some of the stuff I'm currently into.
And about the music shops and whatnot, I agree with online being the easiest. Heck, even the most dedicated shops don't usually have stuff like Oceansize and Sky Architect, so places like Amazon.com are always reliable, but I really enjoy the feeling of just looking through a bunch of cd's to see what I might find. There's nothing like finding a hidden gem amongst a bunch of crap.

I'm not too up on most of the symphonic stuff, so I can't help with other bands like Yes. I feel like they're pretty much one of a kind anyway, excluding bands like Starcastle who pretty much go for the Yes sound. I just really can't stand the mixing on GftO - the songs themselves may be good, but the album seems very shrill to my ears. I've never listened to Riverside or Sky Architect, so I can't help with either of those either.

I actually really enjoy Going For the One, it's the first album where I feel Yes regressed instead of progressed in terms of their sound, yet in terms of songwriting it's one of their better ones, one of the few where songwriting is really important but it's not really poppy.
My next order will come from wayside, and will probably include The Residents, Korekyojin, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and a few other things ... actually, I've been really craving some new Koenjihyakkei too.

If I can figure out where to get them, I'd like to check out an album by the Shibusashirazu Orchestra - great free-jazz/rock stuff from Japan which I discovered today. Otherwise, possibly Yoshida Tatsuya's album Magaibutsu or one of Mats Gustafsson or Peter Brötzmann's bands with Paal Nilssen-Love on drums.
Death - The Sound of Perserverance (reissue) and maybe something by Agalloch or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Oh, and a CD by a buddy's band, Midnight Dawns.
A wise man once said, " I have always wanted to be quoted."
