"Duchess" and "Turn It On" are fantastic, the closing epic is okay, the rest is the dullest collection of semi-ballads on Earth (were they trying to repeat the success of "Follow You Follow Me"?), 5/10. My least favourite period of Phil-fronted Genesis, 1983-1986-1991 run is way stronger in my book than 1978-1980-1981

I don't like it as much as I used to; there's a bit more forgettable filler on it than I'd like (Tony's solo compositions are particularly disappointing) but it still has enough strong material for me to rate it 7 out of 10 overall.

I like it. Could go between 3.6 and 3.8, something like that. Rounded up to 4 for PA. Some stinkers, but most of the tracks get me so hyped up.

The best post-Hackett album, on the 4-star border. Duchess and Duke's Travels / Duke's End are the highlights and there is hardly any crap to be found here.

My favorites are "duchess" and "dukes travels"/"dukes end." I also enjoy "behind the lines","turn it on again","cul de sac" and "misunderstanding." The others not so much although I did grow to like "man of our times" somewhat. The rest just sound sleepy or half baked to me. Not really bad just not that good.

Really? I think Dukes Travels/Dukes End is one of the best epic tracks they did after the PG era. That synth solo is great.

I think Cul-de-Sac is weak, Misunderstanding less so, but the rest ranges from good (Man of our Times, Please don’t ask) to excellent (most of the other tracks). Duke’s Travels is great as anything prior to this release. And the Hentschel production is crisp and modern sounding. Some of Rutherford’s bass playing is ripping, he really is a better bassist than guitar player.

It's interesting how opinions vary. I like Cul-de-sac more than please don't ask(which I find a bit sappy). Cul-de-sac is a throw back to the older Genesis and sounds like it could have been on Selling England imo. It's one of the better songs on the album. You just have to really listen to it. It's pure Genesis.

A decent lp.....I actually think it has 'catchier' and better tracks than ATTWT.....but both lack something the previous two albums had and a long way from the Gabriel years...imho.

In general, many songs drone on, but I have to say "Guide Vocal" is simply far too short.

All the way Gabriel era is my fav Genesis era, but I like Duke more than ATTWT. Also I think it´s better than Abacab, although that album also has some really great songs.

Cul-de-sac, musically, was not a cul-de-sac for Genesis. Case closed.

Agreed! Interestingly, most of those songs are in Duke's hidden suite of Behind the Lines/Duchess/Guide Vocal/Turn it on Again/Duke's Travels/Duke's End. I always play the Duke suite songs together, myself.

I agree with half this statement, it's not a 5 star album for me, probably 3.5.

Fixed that for you. Just like for ATTWT, I had major grasp problems when this one came out... Chronologically, it's the last one I bought. I hated the hits, and though I did hear the rest of the stuff and thought it was OK (but no more), compared to previouis albums, it simply wasn't cutting the mustard. I slowly turned around in the 90's and, though I haven't owned neither since the late 80's (my vinyls got lost crossing the pond), think better of them nowadays (ATTWT being more even than the peak & trough Duke) than I did back then.

I prefer it to ATTWT. Duke has some fine songs but it's an album which shows where Genesis music is heading.
