^Oh I like recent albums. A lot. Just not the latest. They kind of needed a change in direction imo
I think they got a change of direction. See, to me, Train of Thought is their most boring album - the one I rarely listen to. Though for some people, that was their favorite (maybe you're in that group?) - I guess that's one of the reason they're such a great band: the fact that they appeal to different people for different reasons. Anyways, to me, I kept feeling like Portnoy was trying to take them AWAY from Prog, and when he left they put out a 100% Prog album, and I absolutely LOVED it! To me, it's one of their LEAST boring albums because of that reason.
I think the new album is pretty good. It is the best thing they've done since 6DOIT, maybe Octavarium (could have done without Panic Attack and Never Enough). I usually skip past those. The rest of 8V is great though. With the new album I can see where people could have a problem with it. Musically it is all over the place. Not as much as the previous two CDs, but with Images and Words & Awake you knew exactly where they were going with the music. A couple of songs on ADTOE sound like they were Portnoy-influenced leftovers. Build Me Up sounds like it could have been on Awake. This is the Life, Bridges in the Sky, Breaking All Illusions, and Outcry are all great effin songs. The ballads are good too, but I never really include them when I discuss DT songs because well ballads are just ballads.
Portnoy's biggest problem was that he wanted to take all of his musical tastes and put them into one band. The problem is that when you do that, you wind up with songs like Constant Motion and Never Enough. I think ADTOE is a step in the right direction however. Maybe for the next CD they can shake off that last bit of Portnoy influence from the previous two CDs.
AND I think we can all be grateful for one more thing which I know I am not alone in.. no more Portnoy backing vocals.

^^^ You forget that 'insulting' DT is personal.
Very childish defensive-aggressive behaviour from a person with a low threshold of tolerance for opinions he doesn't like flimsily masked as 'having fun'.

In some cultures, where family loyalty and honor are considered paramount, a harmless "your mom" joke could be taken as a terrible insult. Ian is British, and I have no idea what connotations that comment carries in his culture. I'm pretty sure that it's not acceptable in European cultures, though, because I used to know someone who moved to the U.S. from Europe who considered "your mom" an insult to his family honor.
What I'm saying is that I know you meant your post as a joke, and not to be offensive, but you have to be considerate to what people in other cultures might think of what you say. There's no shame in apologizing, either; you made a honest mistake, and if you admit it people will realize that you didn't mean to offend anyone.
Everyone else: If you don't know, "your mom" jokes are a light kind of fun jab in America. I understand your reaction, and that you want Geoff to apologize. I get that. No reason to get upset, though, we can all learn something about other people's cultural customs from this.
He called me a punk too....
Calling anyone 'punk' on a 'prog' forum is one of the worst insults known to man . You know it's a touchy subject...
He is American. There "punk" means a worthless person. A hoodlum. Entirely derogatory.

Jacob, the issue I am taking now is that no one seems to know exactly what they want me to apologize for, because if you look at my statement I actually said... NOTHING! But I did apologize to Snow Dog for saying his mother sounded the same. And I apologized to thellama73 for saying that his face had features, and he graciously accepted my apology and forgave me...now if I could just forgive myself...
Seriously, taking offense easily on an internet forum for something you can't actually define and then calling the person you took offense from immature is a bit...um...ironic.

Golly, you're really going to push that? Fine. You admitted you made a flippant remark, so...I'm sorry I called you a punk, I meant nothing serious about it. Around here, you call your brother/sister a punk when they flick your ear or something like that.

Apologise for using a commonly know insult to someone's family simply because you don't agree with their opinion. If you truly were saying nothing why did you say anything at all? You and everyone else knew it was an insult.

Please everyone. Just let it go. geoff will never admit to being wrong ever. You've seen his DT arguments. I've leatnt my lesson not to discuss things with him anymore. i've also learnt that he not the guy I once liked.
You derailed your own thread. I thought you owed him an apology and I am 62 years old. The one positive thing which has come out of this is Snowdog's restraint which is a sign of maturity.
timothy leary - your mother has a face. JS19 - your mother likes to breathe. Ambient Hurricanes - your mother wears clothing. I'm on a roll here with these horribly offensive mother insults! Everyone gonna demand apologies now? I'm not the person you once liked! I'm EVIL!!!! MUAH HAH HAH HA!!!

dtguitarfan, regardless of whether you thought what you said was offensive, if all you have to say in response to something is, as you have stated quite plainly, "NOTHING", you probably shouldn't bother saying anything. Also, regardless of whether you thought what you said was offensive, it's still very rude to try and argue that those who found it offensive are wrong.

Ahem...
I really loathe Dream Theater, with or without Portnoy. I've hated everything they've released since...ehhhh... Awake (and that's pushing it). At this point I'd rather hear Mott the Hoople or some sh*t.
I vote Ringo Starr for reasons I adamantly refuse to explaborate upon.
