Hmm, moment of panic...
I switched off towards the end of Ewaz Vader a little. I admit I was doing something else whilst listening but it was pulling me until the last few tracks. Is it a case of the album being just a smidgen too long? Or is it the fact the last tracks just aren't quite as good? Edited by James - September 16 2008 at 10:47 |

Don't know, I like all the tracks equally. Though if you're in a certain mood I can see how the album might feel a bit repetitive at times. |

It wasn't repetitiveness as such for me... I just started to feel less engrossed towards the end. I'll give it another listen but this time through headphones, to see if makes a difference. Apart from that, it was a terrific album. |

It is terrific. Do try again, I think they really smoke on the last track, "Missing Imperator".

The last track was the one that seemed to pass me by... hmm. I loved the slow, Univers Zéro type one though (was it track 2 or 3?). Edited by James - September 16 2008 at 11:07 |

I liked all of it, myself. But then, it's a first listen, and I am probably biased anyway...
(Haha, I posted an entry raving about One Shot on my LJ. Lo and behold, my delightful music-loving friend from Connecticut demands to hear it. Well, it's not my fault if someone's stuck it up on a blog somewhere... he just grabbed it and the first impression is: "THIS ONE SHOT IS BLOWING MY MIND!" He's so funny! ) |

I think I need to hear the first two for comparison purposes. It's not all about Ewaz Vader folks!

Then you need to sort that out. How would describe their sound? It's jazzy but it's not exactly fusion either... there's lot of symphonic parts in their sound as well. I am terrible at describing music on the whole. |

Again, it's one of those Soleil Zeuhl albums gathering dust that I need to play soon. |

I saw it for sale from Laser's Edge and the summary ended with "highest recommendation", praising it as wonderful contemporary Zeuhl. No reviews on their PA page, so I thought I might inquire if anyone's heard it, as I'm not inclined to leap at the $19 price without data. |

Yes, a very laid back, female-vocalization lead (voice, not words), jazzy music. Nothing particularly striking but well done. There's not much of the "typical" zeuhl in there, but there are several elements present in most songs.

Hmm. Thanks for that input, Assaf. Probably will mark this as a low priority.

May I suggest a few other recent bands (avant-rock, not necessarily zeuhl) ?
NORMAL LOVE with their eerie and weird math-rock/avant-rock sound and the use of a violin have a very good debut called 2007 which was released in... 2007.
OLIVE MESS have recently released a new album which follows in the path of their wonderful first album called Gramercy.
PANZERPAPPA are a superb band which mixes avant-rock, some zeuhl and Canterbury-ian sound. Their last album is excellent.
POCHAKAITE MALKO try their second album Laya which is a wonderful mix of zeuhl and avant-rock.
RATIONAL DIET though not many like them I feel they are very good with influences from several early 20 century composers. New album on the way.
OCTOBER EQUUS very accomplished Spanish group, influenced by early UZ and others. Their new one is coming out soon.
OREJAS Y LA LENGUA, LAS great Argentinian avant-rock band.
SATANIQUE SAMBA TRIO not satanic and not a trio, eerie and eccentric mix of styles.
SHINING brutal and at times weird rock/jazz
TIGROVA MAST fantastic Croatian avant-rock!!
XHOHX you have to listen to this Belgian house of craziness and horror. Not for the faint of heart and you need to get used to the vocals.
YOLK French avant-rock/zeuhl band. I like them a lot, but I seem to be in a minority.
YUGEN in my opinion one of the best bands to come out from Italy and in general recently. They finished recording a second album and are now mixing it.
ARANIS you have to have to have to get this wonderful chamber music (yet rock spirited) Belgian ensemble albums.
DIE ANARCHISTISCHE ABENDUNTERHALTUNG same ballpark as Aranis, particularly in the first album but got much more experimental and electric in later albums.
DATE COURSE PENTAGON ROYAL GARDEN another Japanese interesting (now defunct) experimental rock/avant-garde
GARGANTUA interesting and still forming their sound Polish group. Worth exploring in my opinion (both albums, which are different in style).

Wow! That's quite a list. Should provide some excellent investigation as well as conversation, thanks. I've heard some tracks by October Equus that sounded very good and James just today (or yesterday ) was raving about Shining.

I have Olive Mess' Gramercy on CD and need to give that a spin.
Rational Diet's first album is great, in my opinion. Le Silo... wow, wonderful band! Features the keyboard player from Angherr Shisspa. Shining are indeed wonderful. I don't know the others yet but some of them I've been meaning to check them out. |

I'll join in the general chorus of approval for
Le Silo
Pochakaite Malko (but you can skip their debut album)
Rational Diet
Yugen
All excellent bands pushing their respective musical envelopes and keeping the spirit of avant prog alive and kicking like Peter Lorrimer.
As for Ewaz Vader - One Shot, I like all of it but that kind of instrumental fusion can feel like it's dragging on a bit if you're not in the mood. Programme some random Ruins, Fantomas and maybe the Residents Commercial Album and come back to it later.
