Now Joel, you write some mighty fine reviews, but I'm not sure anyone can get me interested in Brave.

That is one of the most boring albums I've ever heard.  I think I gave it a two...Ermm

Really?!

I'd rank it as the band's all-time low... 3 stars for me right now.
I would have given it a three based on my first impression when it first came out (it was my first album by that band).  I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. After further listening, I found myself genuinely enjoying it and really appreciating the concept, as it were (being able to relate to it as a teacher and all).I still had problems with "Sleep Together" and "Way Out of Here," which I still consider to be the weakest two songs on the album, but now I'm beginning to get into those more also. All said, Deadwing is still my favorite by a mile.

Clap
FOABP is a fantastic album I think, though I a also think Sleep Together is weak compared to the other songs on there. I do really like Way Out Of Here though. The concept is very interesting too, I agree with you, and for me as a kid it probably is just as interesting as for you being a teacher.

As I kid I gamed quite a lot, and this really was the way I started to think of my parents, and my father did almost gave up trying to talk to me. Then my xbox broke and I somehow didn't feel the need to get a new one (instead of that I got myself a guitar)... now the relationship between me and my parents is as good as it could be. But really, when I look back I see how much I was "addicted" to such a stupid gaming device... the thing sort of absorbed me (which sounds pretty creepy, doesn't it?). </span></span>

Same thing happened to me about 4 months ago with my PS3... Now I only really use it for around an hour or two a week. At my peak, I averaged nearly 9 hours a day over a two-week school holiday

These lines seem the most believable to me:

My friend says he wants to die
He's in a band
They sound like Pearl Jam
The clothes are all black
The music is crap

In school I don't concentrate
And sex is kinda fun
But just another one
Of all the empty ways
Of using up a day

How can I be sure I'm here?
The pills that I've been taking confuse me
I need to know that someone sees that
There's nothing left I simply am not here

Bipolar disorder
Can't deal with the boredom

I have a friend (we recorded several songs together, actually) who had depression for a while and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He was on pills for a while, and usually slept through class.

I can relate to the lyrics, but I still don't feel an overall link to the album.

I couldn't get into it for a very long while, but after some advice from Eric (E-Dub) which was about taking the story realistically, I developed a massive appreciation for it... One of my all-time favourite albums. It did take me quite a while to get into it though.

I had no idea there was a story!

Right, I'm off to breakfast though now.  Be back later.

I used to have that too, sometimes I gamed till about 3 or even 4 AM... But now I haven't gamed for over a year, maybe even two years, and it feels great! I only thing I still find interesting from a few games is the soundtrack.LOL

Urk. I'm still fairly young, compared to Robert, and I have to admit that the pretense of the lyrics is what's keeping me well off that album... honestly,  a 40-year old whining about how the kidz iz too adddicted to ze komputerzzz is even worse than me writing about life in the ghetto. I just don't think he's realistic, reasonable or remotely profound. It's basically grumpy-old-man material.

Yes, I had a time when I'd spend too long on games... I still spend more time than I reasonably should on games (chances are, I'll just cut that out when I get to uni in a week or two by means of just not bringing my games with me). Nonetheless, Swilson's hysterical, inane exaggeration just comes across as uninformed.

The album isn't only about kids and computers, but also prescription drugs, bipolar disorder, information overload and reliability to sources like the Internet. I think Steven is very right about these things. Boredom is a common thing, which as far as I know always has been a common thing, but that combined with stuff like computer games and TV can lead to some sort of blank mind. People watching TV all day, gaming all day, hanging around in the mall doing nothing, people vandalizing neighborhood because they are bored, it all is very common.

I see this all around me... I'm 17 years old and the majority of people of my age seem to have no ambitions at all, and most of them spend their days by watching TV, talking about the most shallow things, not caring about school and getting drunk now and then. Things like poetry and philosophy are for people who "don't have a life" and people who don't get drunk every weekend also don't have a "life". I don't know how much of this was in earlier generations... but I assume it was less than it now is. Also, the kids all watch MTV. I also watch MTV, but I know almost everything shown there is fake... many kids don't know that.

I think Steven has a good reason to be worried, and of course the album is not pointed towards all kids... but I think he really is right about the majority. You might be able to quit gaming when you think you should, but I know many people have or will have a hard time with that. And I seriously think sometimes gaming can be seen as an addiction.

Is it?  I've never actually seen Iron Maiden live.  VH1 Classic is showing a concert from 2008.

Yeah, that tour is very much like the World Slavery Tour revisited, lots of the same songs and props. One of the things that changed is Bruce's voice, he's so much better live nowadays Thumbs Up

Now they are playing the best heavy metal music video ever.  Twisted Sister's I Wanna Rock.  They just don't make music videos like they used to.  But I guess you probably had to be a teenager in 1984 to appreciate it.

Kiss started their latest tour last night at Cobo Arena, which is where they recorded their first Alive! album.  VH1 classic is now playing Love It Loud.  What a fun song!!! Of course, this is after they became Unmasked, so it wasn't true Kiss, but again it was during my glory days of discovering heavy metal music. LOL
