Hey Jim, do you have any glaringly obvious and embarrassing gaps in your RPI collection? Because there's one of mine right there! ![]() ![]() |

Ha! Thanks for answer Jim! You've got it right - I'm on an extreme RPI kick right now. I am glad I can pass on the obsession. ![]() ![]() |

I've always been into the lesser-knowns as you know, so my collection has many gaps in the discogs of the heavy hitters in particular. PFM, Orme, Area, Battiato, Goblin, Trolls....I'm missing many of their titles. I've heard many of them but don't own them. I watched a bit of the 2002 PFM dvd concert the other night. It was OK. PFM remains "RPI for English prog fans" in my opinion ![]() |

Grazie my friend, I look forward to seeing more of your insights. Always fun when someone catches "the RPI bug", you will have lots of fun but your bank account will take a bad hit ![]() |

Yes, I thought you got what I was ranting about the other day when mentionining PFM! ![]() ![]() I think the four `big' releases that I don't own are the Semiramis album, Rocky Filj, Osanna's `Palepoli' and the above mentioned Metamorfosi! ![]() |

You don't have Rocky? Todd's favorite album!! I promise I won't tell him.
![]() I think you'd love Rocky and Osanna. Semiramis is very well loved but lately hasn't done much for me. Need to try that one again I think. Metamorfosi I really enjoy but it does turn some people off with its demeanor. A bit formal. But oh the keys and the melodies. ![]() |

It's still less scandalous than my collection, Michael. I have more modern RPI albums than classic ones... including two copies of "La Notte Anche di Giorno"

Is that the most recent La Coscienza di Zeno album, Sam? If so, I always have a complete mental blank on that title, I just think of it as `that one with the green and blue cover'...
![]() Same with the vintage RPI band who did the `Contaminazione' album. I can vividly recall the cover, but never the band name! Edited by Aussie-Byrd-Brother - August 29 2016 at 09:32 |

![]() ![]() That would be Rovescio Della Medaglia. It's much easier to memorise the names if you know their meaning.

Area - Arbeit Macht Frei One of the first albums I've checked out at the beggining of my Italian Prog revival. Still, it remains one of my favorites. I like all things jazz-prog that sound original and heck, is Area one of these bands?
![]() Fred Frith - Speechless Really enjoyed Gravity yesterday, so I had to listen to the follow-up of it - Speechless. One thing I love about all things Henry Cow-related is that the musicians, in most of the side projects, always make an effort to stay fresh. Here, Frith mixes the ethnic folk rhythms with a jazzier, more RIO-like music. Excellent! Raccomandata Con Ricevuta Ritorno - Per... Un Mondo Di Cristallo Man, I really regret I listened to this album today. I was not in the right... circumstances, in the right mood, right time. Had some work to do and was really bothered, could not devote my full attention to the music. Anyway, I hope I did not spoil it for myself. What I could catch was something that reminded me of Il Balletto Di Bronzo at times. Except it has more pastoral, acoustic passages. Still, feel like it's very good and look forward to meeting it again. Kultivator - Barndomens Stigar Thanks a ton for the recommendation, Sagi, friend! ![]() I Giganti - Terra in Bocca (Poesia di un Delitto) Wow, that's pretty nice! I did some research on the band before listening and learned that they were actually a beat band for the most part, recording only one progressive album in their career. Melodies are a l l o v e r t h e p l a c e . Everywhere! Great, beautiful, romantic melodies. And there is also a good amount of sophistication. You can hear their pop roots in places, but still, compares very well to RPI of 1971. |

Yeah, regarding Giganti....there were numerous bands who made only one prog-centric recording in a career full of beat albums or Ital-pop, and we had to discuss whether they were suitable for PA. In many cases we deemed they were important to the development and breadth of RPI, but if often meant that many of their non-prog albums were added too, because of course every artist get their full discog added. So it leads to some interesting listening at times!

Egg - The Polite Force 7/10 Don't normally care for prog trios, especially keyboard-bass-drum trios (ELP, Le Orme, Triumvirat etc), and Egg certainly doesn't entirely escape my problems with the format, but this is a good listen. Boilk is a great experimental piece, while A Visit and Long Piece both have some interesting segments. Contrasong is odd and the vocals are horribly incorporated, but works well enough otherwise. Won't explore Egg's discography any further, although Symphony No. 2 sounds nice.
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior (first listen) 6.5/10 Normally I find RTF horribly sterile and dull so this was a pleasant surprise. The Romantic Warrior stands as as particularly good while the rest is decently enjoyable. Genuinely creative songwriting here. Stanley Clarke and Lenny White still deserve much better though. Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex 7.5/10 Pretty good album, not much else to say

Tonight's choices:
Birth Control – Titanic Styx – Crystal Ball Novalis – Brandung Alphataurus – s/t Supersister – Present From Nancy (such a wonderful `Canterbury’ album!) Le Orme – Contrappunti (I’m going this one again as well, Sagi) New Trolls – Concerto Grosso 1 (I quite like this for what it is, even if it’s full of stuff that later RPI bands would do in more exciting ways). P.F.M – Live Collection: Live in Concert, 25th November 1980 – comes with a DVD of the concert too with the band in horrendous 80’s fashions! ![]() Pink Floyd – the Zabriskie Point recordings (A re-burned compilation I made of all the Pink Floyd pieces from the expanded two-disc soundtrack reissue onto one disc, makes for a perfectly decent PF album now!) |

Thanks Michael for reminding me to listen to the Zabriskie music, I found 8 songs on YouTube. Checking it out right now.
Also: Orme: Felona e Serona Latte Miele: Passio Secundum I enjoyed the Latte Miele way more than the Orme. :) |

Jim, the way I compiled it was the following: 1. Heart Beat, Pig Meat 2. Crumbling Land 3. Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up 4. Country Song 5. Unknown Song. 6. Love Scene Version 6 7. Love Scene Version 4 It plays quite beautifully too! The Floyd could deliver really nice bluesy tracks well called upon! ![]() |
