The same here. I can also say that about Captain Beefheart - I just don't get either of them.

Sorry to appear a bit dim, but why are you buying albums that you don't like?

Dream Theater. I have never made it all the way through one of their albums.
Spock's Beard, Glass Hammer and The Flower Kings all leave me cold, but I find them forgettable rather than objectionable. Closer to my own preferred genres, I have never got into Cardiacs although they tick plenty of boxes for me. |

Dream Theater: Great musicians, but no stand out music for my ears. They sound to me like a blend of Rush, Metallica and Iron Maiden tribute acts.
Gentle Giant: Again, incredible musicians with a very original approach to songwriting. A unique sound and style, and strong melodies. It's all there, but there's just something silly and slightly irritating about the end result. It's almost how I imagine a lot of prog rock sounds to people who hate prog rock. There are selected songs I do quite like. |

Tribute acts? I wouldn't use this word even for bands that are cloning other bands. Very belittling. Also I don't hear much Maiden in DT music, but in their early days there was a US Power influence, especially Fates Warning.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head with regards to why I never quite warmed to Gentle Giant in spite of their incredible musicianship. And I think you might be right as to why I didn't get into prog until the latter part of my teenage years. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Hi, It doesn't have to do with "like" or "dislike". It's like you saying that you got rid of that Picasso because it was crap. Or you didn't buy it when it was cheap and available. I don't judge music by likes and dislikes. Same with classical music ... there simply is way too much for anyone to think that their like and their dislike is what matters in the arts! The arts, for all intents and purposes are about breaking barriers and new ideas ... not your like or dislike. And THIS is the part that most fans can not handle ... their likes and dislikes don't matter, except some of the obvious type of prostitution out there that is just like what the old record companies we hate did! I appreciate GG for their amazing ingenuity in creating music. Very simple. And their concert I saw was magnificent, and an experience that most folks these days could not even imagine, and get fake stage shows with silly pyrotechnics to make you think it was great! They, just about had no light show, and did not need it! You gotta hand it to them ... that is amazing at a time when everyone is trying to be cool'er and more attractive than anyone else! GG just did their thing! Edited by moshkito - January 12 2022 at 07:38 |

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Your dismissing the emotional impact of music on the individual listener, in favour of an almost mathematical evaluation of the bands creative and technical skills. Both the subjective and objective evaluation of music are equally valid. Music is supposed to evoke an emotional reaction of some kind in the listener. I was told off by Cristi for saying that Dream Theater sounded like a blend of tribute acts to me. Maybe he had a point. Maybe that was somewhat dismissive of me, but note that I did also acknowledge their skill as musicians. Gentle Giant is a band I have enormous respect for, due to their obvious technical chops, and unique approach to song writing, but the emotional response to their music is missing for me. If someone was playing a set of dustbin lids, at 150 BPM with extreme percussive proficiency; with crazy polyrhythms etc, it would be very clever...but it's likely it would still sound like someone hitting dustbin lids...which could get annoying after a while.. ![]() |

The ones who have no music to experience. Some artists seem to have gotten included on PA but yet have no music to be heard on Bandcamp, Spotify or even YouTube. Add to that no physical products to be found making them as mysterious as the legendary debut cassette from Godspeed You! Black Emperor

It seems Gentle Giant are a bit of a Marmite band where you either love or loathe them. I wouldn't say I loathe them, but I wouldn't mind if I never hear a Gentle Giant album again, having listened to them all in one day recently.

I would say any band that uses growling vocals. I struggle with this. As an example, I've enjoyed Opeth's recent releases (Damnation, and Heritage onwards), but can't get past the vocals on their earlier works.
Having said that, I used to have issues with Henry Cow (as recent as 10 years ago), Gentle Giant (as recent as 15 years ago), and even King Crimson (also about 15 years ago). All three are among my favorites now. Evidence that curmudgeons can evolve. I may yet experience the breakthrough in the coming years. Who knows?

A current group I’ve listened to a number of times but failed to enjoy is A Formal Horse. In common with others here the experience is a slightly odd one, because if I look at what the band does, the elements of their music, I “ought to like it”. I certainly don’t dislike it, but so far it just leaves me cold. I’ve gone back periodically because - like most people here I’m sure - I’ve had the experience many times by now of listening to something without grokking it X times, then it suddenly clicking on the X+1 listen. And because comments from people who have similar tastes to mine keep reminding me that I’m probably missing out on a good thing here. Edited by Mascodagama - January 12 2022 at 23:04 |

Like the OP I haven't been able to gel to Van Der Graaf Generator after at last three tries. I haven't totally given up on them and I'm sure I'll give them a go again sometime this year. But I find Pavlov's Dog un-listenable. I never made it past the first song I ever heard by them and have no interest in ever hearing them again.
