Sample clips ? C'mon, be serious. The "sample clips" are called albums and you can listen for yourself. I think you can even listen to them on the computer. |
Sir, I wasn't arguing with you. I politely asked for samples. I've posted samples. I think posting samples is cool. I'm familiar with Randy's and Steve's work. I own many hard rock and heavy metal albums.

Omg, leave you guys unattended and Rush helped pioneered fusion? Let me reiterate and expand my stance. Rush had marginal impact on the influence of progressive metal as they were a prog group and not a metal band. Who did actually have influence on prog metal? Metal bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and the rest of the new wave of British metal, and themusic they played are what determines not only the rhythmic and melodic nature of the music that prog metal bands play as well as the "sound" of the band which includes guitar tone, phrasing, attack, etc., as well as techniques of playing. And this extends as well to drumming which is actually more technical than that of prog groups and later expanded into fast and extreme double bass drumming, again influenced by metal, bands, not prog bands. Metal bands also influenced vocalists with operatic styled singing that was common early on in bands like Queensryche, before Geoff Tate and co. toned it down. What also did metal bands influence? Keyboards. There is influence from guitar and keyboard bands like Rainbow. (Not quite metal? Perhaps, but they are still not Rush. Thrash riffing with 7 strings/ and growls came later but from metal. Who did Rush influence? Prog metal bands in their epic song structures of multipart suites, etc. And naturally, other prog bands and Rush cover bands. And two talented, but unoriginal brothers that I recorded demos for years ago named Chris and Brett Rodler.

What's your beef with the Rodler boys, Steve?
And when are you going to listen to the other clips I posted?

LOL. Tate was just AS operatic in his pre-QR band Myth, even more so. He started to tone it down in the late '80s & early '90s because he was losing a lot of range. Listen to him live after the '90s. He got worse.

And I knew you would respond. I saw that coming a mile away.
Trust me I'm not losing any sleep over it. I just can't believe you don't hear any fusion in their music or maybe just not enough to qualify them as prog fusion like I do. Anyway, even jazz music archives has them as jazz related rock although I hear more fusion in them than jazz. For me Chicago or Steely Dan are much better examples of jazz related rock but I suppose it's something. |
Yeah, I responded to you, because it seemed necessary to clarify what I meant. Let's move on. | It had been years since I last listened to happy the Man, but refreshed myself with some music and do have a recollection of the music, Jut a note from someone who was on the Eclectic team, it wasn't just about being eclectic (Prog is commonly eclectic and Prog commonly fuses styles) but about crossing core prog categories such as JRF (or just jazz) and Symphonic Prog. If it leaned very much to one and not the other, then we would tend to suggest for the other category. Ping-ponging can get annoying, so I'm rather like if it seems to fit reasonably well, then yes for the category it's currently being evaluated for. Evaluations are time consuming and we are all volunteers. Of course we would also try to compare one with other acts in the categories and take the listed influences into consideration. In the case of Happy the Man, I could see it as crossing Symph and jazz-rock with Art Rock qualities (Eclectic split from the old Art Rock category) - if more poppy then it would fit Crossover. It hasn't struck me as jazz enough for JRF or to fit very well with other acts in the category. I would sooner liken it to Camel (on Crafty Hands) than, say, Weather Report, but that may well depend on the album. I think it would appeal more to fans of Symph generally and fans of kinds of Eclectic Prog than ones who are mostly into JRF on the whole, and I also think its more typically Prog (despite any uniqueness) than a lot of JRF which various Prog purists would balk at for including under the Progressive Rock banner (and I'm not talking things like Kind of Blue since that is not JRF at all, but say, electric Miles or even Mwandishi era Hancock -- y'know, the good stuff ;) ). As some have said, JRF was pretty much made for Mahavishnu Orchestra, but I digress.... That said, if you think it fits well the JRF parameters, you can notify that team members (say by PM), or make a thread on it if you want. Both the Eclectic prog and JRF teams would have to agree to a move, and suggested moves are not a priority. I've suggested a couple things to be moved over the years and have had success by talking to the team members (PMs making the case can help). But its important to build a strong case and show a deep understanding of how the categories operate. If one can cite plenty of related bands in the category you want it moved to, that helps. Ideally this site would use multi-labels for albums and not just place a band with its whole discography in one category (and multi-labels for bands). A lot in PA can fit different categories.

It's not up to me, but I think HTM is fine where they're at. I just played some tracks from both the debut and Crafty Hands. Eclectic is exactly that, and it's not a disparaging tag. They're not JRF.

You won't even admit they at least have fusion elements or moments which is just insane.
Anyway, I thought we moved on.
