I take what Jon Anderson says with a grain of salt and didn't agree with him that no JA no Yes---but now I'm starting to think differently. This lineup to carry on is a weak one for sure. So now there's an official statement from the band. I guess this makes it a more adequate time to discuss what we think about the possible futures of Yes. To begin with, it seems Squire actually wanted things to go this way, which is rather nice. Still, indeed I feel the line-up is getting ever weaker... for the moment, Billy Sherwood might be good enough to take Yes out of their scheduled dates, and actually for what I've heard he seems to be a rather good bass player and a good disciple of Squire... but I don't think he could ever be at the same level, and his input to Yes has almost always been mediocre (except for "The More We Live", which I do like a lot), so having him in Yes writing music and having his touch on vocals and on the sound (just check out what happened to Heaven and Earth once he came on board... I believe his touch is in a good part responsible for such a weak sound on that album). His presence in the band helps make this line-up keep in touch with Yes, taking an alumni of the band in... however, I would much rather have someone like Tony Levin or Nick Beggs take the spot (Beggs would be wonderful, and it would mean Yes is back in track trying to seek the best of the best). Perhaps the best way to go now would be to make a new "Union" tour... though on a smaller scale, so that we could have Anderson and Wakeman reunite with the current line-up (the ABWH line-up just won't happen, no matter how much we would want that... Bruford is retired, and he seems adamant to remain that way), perhaps we could get Rabin back too (though I'm not particularly thrilled with that, but to complete a Union line-up), and Tonly Kaye would be nice too, since he's been in touch with Sherwood... but 3 keyboard players seems to be overkill.

@ Nic... I left in 2000 to return to the studio world of production and making as much music with as many of my personal heros as possible, mission accomplished. This new return is for my love of my friend who passed, my love of YES music, and my desire to give hope for the future of Yes to those fans of the band who still believe. Call my crazy... but those sound like good enough reasons to go for it.

Well I think if Chris wanted them to carry on then it would definitely be wrong to do anything else.  Perhaps he wanted the band to continue for the forseeable future, with the baton being handed on as the years pass, I think I remember reading something to that effect a few years back.

Me too---I will not go---I didn't join 2/3 of Yes group but agree with it in principle. It's one think for Steve to tour with an amazing band and play Yes music---like Jon did a few times---but to call it Yes---is a shame for the legacy. I think Chris wants his young family to make some money---which is fine I guess.
My problem with billy is right in his comment---making tribute music to his heros and hoping some of their greatness will rub off on him so he can make money---meanwhile his contributions to Yes greatness are zero (OYE, parts of The Ladder)

They have been saying for years that Yes is more than its' members and that they hope that it would be an ongoing concern even after they were all gone.  I suspect that they had hope that it would stay in the family and the membership would be filled out by the younger Andersons, Wakemans, Brufords, and Howes.

People need to stop hating on Heaven & Earth. Listen to this beautifully composed Alan White tune and tell me YES isn't still capable of doing great things. I look at all the albums rated 4.00 or higher on here that aren't half as good as this. I agree that H&E is one of the weakest in their discography but the vitriol is a reaction to the amazing heights this band once scaled.

Agree plus who to say the kids are capable of making good prog--so this whole notion is silly. Every band ends and so should Yes --the music can live on--and believe me if Yes does end as a band, sherwood will rerecord and milk it for many years to come.WinkConfusedLOL

I've been comparing bands to companies before. If in a company someone leaves or retired, the company can continue on the same level with a replacement for that person. In a band, that may work as well - but only if the band consists of members of equal quality. In case of Yes, I fear Chris' sound has been so defining for what the band sounds like (because of the sound itself, and the fact that he's always been there) that it will not be easy - probably impossible - to replace him. Billy can play, and he can play a foreground bass as well, but he's not Chris. Time will tell, but sometimes the company needs to decide to call it a day....

That would also pave the way for the young ones mentioned above. There are hundreds of good bands out there, and some deserve to shine, but too many of us keep focussing only on Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd as if they don't exist. From that perspective, I must add that I'm happy to see a few young bands (like IO Earth) being included in the Cruise to the Edge.

I agree. It looks more like Chris Squire wanted the band to carry on even after his death to give some financial support for his family. And even Steve Howe said in 2008-2009 that they needed to work and that was the reason they did not wait anymore for Jon Anderson`s full recovery. It seems that they still need to work and so they still want to do it. But I think that despite these reasons I have lost the interest I had in the band since Anderson was forced to leave the band in 2008. The band should have stopped to work in 2008. They don`t sound very well as a band since then. Even in 2004 with Anderson and Rick Wakeman they started to show that they were not playing as good as in other years.

This was so sad to me when I found out. I had been away from the computer for a couple days, and my first day back, the top post on my FB feed was about his death. Bad enough, it had happened a couple days prior. It was horrible.

I hope the others in Yes will hang up the towel, at least under the name "Yes." Maybe they can call themselves by their last names or something.

RIP Chris.

This was definitely some very sad news... Chris was one of my biggest influences on the bass guitar, along with Geddy Lee and Les Claypool. Also, I agree about Yes either disbanding or using a different name; Steve Howe is awesome and all, but it seems weird to continue with him being the only original member. 

R.I.P. Scott Clendenin and Chris Squire, two fantastic bassists who had to die on the same year. :[

Agreed. I didn't even know Scott had passed until several months after. I saw a Facebook post and thought it was a joke, then did some research... Cry.

For sure, man. Scott was actually my first metal-oriented bass inspiration because The Sound of Perseverance was the very first metal album I listened to. Spirit Crusher and Scavenger of Human Sorrow still have some of my favorite basslines.

Amazing record and line-up for sure. Control Denied was a fantastic project, as well. Imagine where Chuck would be today with his music if he were still with us? I ponder this thought constantly.
