Apropos of nothing, saw a programme last night which centred on John Prescott's take on the class system in England; very interesting & it surprised me how self concious & insecure JP came across.
One segment though infuriated me - he spent some time with three teenage girls from Lewisham, all of whom were (sorry for the possible generalisation here), what's the word? ![]() ![]() ![]() When JP said later it was people like this he came into politics to help I thought "What The ![]() My opinion of JP changed during the documentary - not sure I'm so keen on his (rather manipulative) wife though... ![]() |

Well, when I last was there (over the Xmas holidays), I did cook up a storm! The presence of an excellent supermarked in the neighbourhood was an encouragement for me to display all my ability. Luckily our new home is still reasonably near this wonderful place, and there is also a branch of Safeway just across the street. Talking of what, I didn't know Safeway was an US chain.... Or is just the Brits reaching out across the pond
![]() Jared, hope you're feeling better now! ![]() |

Safeway is a US company - the UK branches were sold off about 20 years ago but kept the old name. Recently were sold again and are now called Morrisons. |

There will be oodles of Safeways for you to go to when you arrive. ![]() I'm sure Alexandria must have a good farmer's market somewhere, but I never looked (there were others closer to where I lived in Maryland). |

Can't remember seeing any farmer's markets around Alexandria, though I read somewhere there was one in the main square in the Old Town. As you know, street markets are an important feature of European life, even more so in countries like Italy where buying fresh food is essential. Unfortunately, even here they seem to have become more of a nuisance (especially as regards traffic) than an asset. The famous Ponte Milvio market, relatively close to my home, was recently taken off the street, so to say, and moved to the ground floor of a shopping mall in a side street. The guy who interviewed me at the Naples Consulate had lived in that area for some years in the past, and he was absolutely floored by the news. On the other hand, the market we walked through every day in Naples was something to behold... Pity that Micky forgot to take pics of the legendary tripe shops

I missed the Prescott programmme but might be able to pick it up on BBC IPOD. I had forgotten Safeway still existed, joined the "I Hate Tesco" campaign a few years ago (after a personal grudge brought about by the mischevious antics of their staff members) - I still prefer to visit Waitrose and have always considered it the best store, everything is easy to find, nice food and always have honey roasted peanuts, white maltesers and Yum Yums in stock ...
![]() and they support local charities - at the checkout they give you a green disc which you can use to "vote" for a local charity - as for prices, well you buy one for low price and get none free, so nothing -gets -thrown- away -because- you- bought -too- many-of-the-damn-things....
![]() last week in a concientious effort to "save the planet" by using fewer bags, i was leaving the store when a box of blueberries fell out of an overloaded bag onto the floor by the main entrance sending them rolling all over the place - i bought another box (£3) and while trying to make a discreet exit
![]() ![]() as i was trying to think up a good excuse for messing up their store on a busy satuday morning (feeling like a naughty schoolboy getting ready for a beating from the headmaster) they were all smiles and apologised offering me a free replacement box of blueberries....explaining it was my fault and i had already bought another one i retreated shameful but relieved to the car park, vowing never to make any more false economies

Had that been at a Stevenage Tesco's, the area would have been busy with the wobbling classes, (a) trying to work out what a blueberry is, then (b) a mad scramble for free food |

Here's a suitable topic for us Shed-ites; the weather...
On the way home from work yesterday, heavy rain turned to sleet, then whilst we were at the pub for a swifty, this turned to heavy snow, which settled to a couple of inches; overnight, the skies cleared & the temperature dropped to approx -4, freezing everything solid & turning my car windscreen into a 2 inch thick block of ice. If that's not enough of an embuggerance, at some point overnight, we had a powercut (power still off ![]() ![]() ![]() Small mercies though, our old wind-up radio provided BBC Radio 4 & the camping stove + old kettle allowed coffee. ![]() Not the best start to the day! |

They stock blueberries in Stevenage Tescos? ![]() Yesterday (being half term) My daughter decided to make blueberry muffins, you CAN NOT buy blueberries in asda, they looked at me like I was asking for some kind of exotic alien fruit. So she made coconut and choc muffins instead. (you can get good coconut in the "foreign foods" aisle, far far better than the stuff in the english aisles! ![]()
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh boy, when that tour bus gets back to blighty they are going to feel it! they've spent the last few days saying "Oooh, it's hot here" down the phone............ we'll wipe the smug sunny grins off their faces. |

As long as Nick doesn't get off the tour bus in a t-shirt & shorts...
![]() One curious thing I noticed though (with the early snow and all) - you don't often see broadleaf trees like oaks still with leaves on & covered in snow. ![]() Mond you - one of the guys in the pub last night said the last time he remembers snow this early was the notorious winter of 1962 - that's something to look forward to then ![]() |

Micky told me that he had to turn the heat on last night, since the wind was howling outside. Here it's still unseasonably warm, in spite of the gallons of rain that came down from the sky last night (some of which ended up in my kitchen

![]() Actually we could use a decent winter, one of the worst things about winter and summer recently is that they are shockingly similar, if we was to have a SCARY winter, maybe we'll all be more grateful for the miserable glint of sunshine we call summer! ![]() W x |

Huzzah - the BBc have suspended the talentless waste of space
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() By whom I mean Russell (Ooh, aren't I such an individual as opposed to a badly dressed talentless ![]() Thing is, they've also (rightly, I guess) suspended Jonathan Ross... but I quite like him - I suppose this means no 'Film 2008' this week, then - Jonathon - I like you, but you're an idiot on this occasion. Incidentally, before anyone points this out, I know this is probably an over-reaction by the BBC & they're being led by popular opinion, but I've not heard the EVIL PHONE CALL in question & am just rejoicing at Russell (expletives deleted) Brand being hung out to dry - if any head's going to roll, who're the BBC going to look at? Ross or Brand? I know where my money's going... Edited by Jim Garten - October 29 2008 at 08:12 |
