Hope everybody had a fabulous Thanksgiving... and that the rest of this holiday season (which appears to be proceeding apace) goes well for you too. We were Thankful that it's this Friday that's list day, and not last Friday when we were stuffed with turkey and whatnot. Also thankful for all the great music we deal in, and the great customers we deal with, both of which make being part of Aquarius so worthwhile. We should also mention what a blast our two recent instores were. Those of you who made it down got to experience it first hand. The Yahowha book signing was a blast. It was like a family reunion (literally) with many of the Yahowha family members seeing each other for the first time in decades. Lots of long beards, white robes and good vibes. Christine even prepared some delicacies from the menu of the original Source family restaurant. And that same day Six Organs Of Admittance performed live and it was fantastic. Dark and gorgeous, folky and dreamy. And Ben promises to post the rules to his Aquarius New Arrivals Drinking Game on his website sometime soon. Two Records Of The Week this time. From France, the eagerly anticipated debut full-length by Aluk Todolo, an amazing slab of post- rock psychedelic black metal tinged krauty weirdness. The other, a compellingly bittersweet, sad and gorgeous soundtrack from Sweden, Erik Enocksson's score for a film called Farval Falkenberg. And then the Highlights, no dearth of those: Ala Muerte / Max Bondi: a 3" cd-r experimental split from the same label as Aluk Todolo. Art Fleury: reissue of radical avant-prog from 1980 Italy, sorta Village of Savooga-ish. Astro Can Caravan: Finland's answer to Ethiopiques. Astro Jazkamer Hair Stylistics: a Japan/Norway noise summit. Axolotl / Inca Ore: limited 7" split from two masters of soft noise. Balroynigress: wonderful art-folk from Sweden, on the same label as Erik Enocksson. Birchville Cat Motel: NZ's BCM get riffy on this new triple cd-r set. Blut Aus Nord: French black metal bizarros return. Burial Chamber Trio: limited 10" vinyl from this subsonic, SUNNO))) related super group. Comet III: kosmiche space trip from Sicilian duo, heavy on the synths. Loren Connors: dreamy guitar airs circa '92-'02 from this unique player. dEADVERSE MASSIVE: killer experimental hip hop, beautiful picture disc, Dalek meets Destructo Swarmbots and more... Deathspell Omega: vinyl versions of two black metal faves. Decimation Blvd.: limited 3" cd-r of creepy post industrial cinematic soundscrape. Expo 70 x 2: two more cd-rs from the "audio archives" of this krauty spacedrone favorite. Fleshpress: more far out dooooooom from Finland. Genesis: Pretty pretty South American psych folk reissue. Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat: Two part song cycle, apocalyptic and dark folk madness. Pep Laguarda & Tapineria: Dreamy Spanish psychedelic folk from the seventies. Les Rallizes Denudes: Rare cd release compiling crucial seventies tracks from this seminal Japanese rock combo. Eric Malmberg: the new solo cd from the prog/folk/jazz organ player of Sweden's Sagor & Swing. Merrell, Baker And Jordan: limited aRCHIVE release from Nadja's Aidan Baker and 2 pals. Morning Recordings: Hushed dreamy intimate pop that has us all swooning. New Thrill Parade: A total gothic mind f**k of heavy weirdness. Planet-Y: An eighties guitar synth and a seventies synthesizer. Spaced out weirdness. Features Yannni from Stinking Lizaveta. Pluramon: Soft and shimmery shoegazey electronic pop dreaminess. Martin Popoff: his biggest book yet, The Collectors Guide To Heavy Metal Vol. 3, the '90s. Donovan Quinn: Skygreen Leopards bard on his own channeling his inner Dylan through a haze of freaked out forest folk. Servile Sect: Buzzing blissed out alien black metal. Electronic shoegaze meets buzzing grimness. Skullflower: essential reissue of one of the best and heaviest Skullflower slabs EVER, IIIrd Gatekeeper. Striborg: Reissue of this Tasmanian misanthropic rain forest black metal classic. With three bonus tracks and all new artwork. Trad Gras Och Stenar: dvd documentary following these AQ fave Swedish psych vets on tour 2002-2005. Tron: not available for mailorder... but come in and play! In addition to the highlighted titles, we also have a whole chunk of other Turbonegro reissues (to get after you get the highlighted ones), more black metal, more everything, just keep reading! And don't forget to scope the "instock, not reviewed" section way at the bottom, there might be some stuff you'd want to "Add to cart" without waiting for our reviews, like the new Ethiopiques (Volume 22) and the new Eccentric Soul (Outskirts Of Deep City). And folks in SF, be sure to check out our pal Maria Forde's art opening on Saturday (that's tomorrow!). More info at the end of the list... And finally, a note to mailorder customers hoping to get stuff by Xmas: PLEASE GET YOUR ORDERS IN ASAP!! Listing alternates wouldn't hurt... And maybe be willing to have partial orders shipped, as some of the stuff we have listed on our website is tough to get, maybe even more so during the holidays. But we'll do the best we can. Thanks for being so understanding. And of course HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! Now let's get to the music... ------------------------------ And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. YOU!! And as always, please realize that we work really hard on the list, so if you find out about stuff through us, please try to buy your records from us. That way we can keep on doing what we do, and we'll always be here with our ears to the ground, and with cds full of metalcore pitbulls, death metal parrots, gamelan playing elephants, recordings of glaciers cracking, ice melting, zamboni's, life support systems, drag races, audience applause, and of course self flagellating Norwegian dwarves, moaning telephone wires, recorded exorcisms, acapella straight edge metalcore, high school battles of the bands, movie theater organ music, Christian psychedelic folk, Bhangra Black Sabbath as well as all the metal, indie rock, electronica, punk rock, reggae, dub, sixties psych, krautrock, classic rock, country and anything else your heart may desire. So thanks. A bunch! ------------------------------ As usual, we recommend that instead of reading this email, you click here right now -- http://aquariusrecords.org/cat read the New Arrivals list online where you can SEE COVER ART and HEAR SOUNDCLIPS we prepared for you. SS Hell Camp: cassette release of super obscure, super cool exploito Nazi prison torture film soundtrack. But those highlights aren't the only things on this list we'd recommend. For instance, we've got a few copies back in stock of the first album from Circle stoner side project Pharaoh Overlord... and the issue of Wax Poetics... a new Nardwuar (double) DVD... two new EM Records reissues devoted to the steel drums jazz sound (!), a collaborative set by Cloudland Canyon and Lichens on the Holy Mountain label... a sw**k Sigur Ros double DVD... Patagonian wind recordings by Francisco Lopez... a new Growing 7"... a new quite excellent ep by the postpunk vets Wire... and lots more! And you'll notice one of our highlights is the new album Six, from Wilildlife, featuring our very own Matt. Well, if you're local, there's a record release show / party. It's December 19th, at the Elbo Room. Wilildlife will be tearing it up (obviously) along with guests Flood and Prizehog. And as we mentioned in our review, you gotta see them live if you can! So here's where things get complicated. Folks placing mailorders, and hoping to get their orders BEFORE Christmas, will most likely at this point have to spring for expedited shipping. Post list, there's always a bit of a backlog, so even if we have everything you ordered in stock, it still might take a couple days to get it in the post. Since Monday is the 17th, a mere 8 days before Christmas, with a weekend in there too, it seems like regular shipping won't get your your package until on or right after Christmas. So if you do need it quicker than that, let us know and we will do our very best. Overseas folks, it might be too late for you, but we're of course willing to try, it might end up being a little pricey though. Just let us know and we'll do what we can. The next list falls right after Christmas, and will most likely not be an ordinary list. Assuming we can all get our sh*t together, it will feature our BEST OF 2007 lists, and if we really manage to kick ass over the holidays, maybe a handful of new stuff reviewed as well. But we're not making any promises. We'll keep you posted for sure. And just 'cuz there's no list doesn't mean there's still not plenty of goodies to order!! Thanks everyone for another fantastic year. We know it's been said before, but it definitely bears repeating... WE LOVE YOU ALL!! Without you, we're nothing. Happy holidays. Be safe. Be happy. We'll be back in two weeks, as always! See you then. ______|_______|_________ New Arrivals #282 and
__________|_______|_____ AQ 2007 Employee Faves!
___|_______|____________ 28 December 2007
Beloved Customers and Friends:
Greetings all!
And happy new year! The next time you hear from us via the list, it will be 2008!! Hard to believe. Thanks to everyone for another fantastic year! So much great music, so many amazing customers, we feel so lucky, and honored to be your source for music big and small, loud and quiet, soft and heavy. Here's to another super rocking, kick ass year!
2007 was pretty intense. Lots of great things, and lots of sad things too. The most notable sad things being the loss of two people close to our hearts, who were huge parts of our lives and were as much a part of aQuarius as any one we can think of. One was Lance Hahn, leader of the band J-Church, who for years was a fixture at the AQ front counter, but also repeatedly whisked Andee away to drum for his band on multiple European and Japanese tours. A great friend and one of the nicest guys ever, he passed away earlier this year. He was only 40. And another taken from us way too young, was our pal Cayce Lindner, who spent more time in the store than most people who actually work here. Many of you might know him as the leader of Flying Canyon, but we knew him as one of the sweetest, most talented, and loving persons we have ever met.
You may have noticed this list is half its normal size, that's because the second half of this week's list is our AQ 2007 staff favorites!!! Check 'em out. Lots of favorites you may have missed, compare them to your top tens, some lists are actual top 10's, some are top way-too-many's, but it was a great year for music, so what can you do?! Also, soon we'll be asking you to submit your lists, to be posted on the AQ site, and of course, we'll pick a couple lists at random and give away AQ gift certificates, so start working on those lists!
But even with the list only half the length, it's PACKED with amazing stuff. Including our record of the week, the second solo lp and maybe most essential releases from Caetano Veloso, recorded while he was in prison, a Tropicalia classic!!
And of course so so so many highlights:

And finally, before we get to the list, our pals in the band Middian, are getting sued, in what has to be one of the lamest lawsuits ever. By another band who barely exists. Read about it at the end of the list, and if you can, donate some money to help them with their legal fees. Their band rules, they're super nice, and stuff like this should never happen.
So that's it. Have a happy and safe new year. Looking forward to another year of amazing music, with all of our amazing customers.
WE LOVE YOU!!

((+:+:+:+:+:+ Aquarius Records ((+:+:+:+:+:+ New Arrivals #283 ((+:+:+:+:+:+ January 11, 2008 ((+:+:+:+:+:+ Beloved Customers and Friends: Greetings and of course, Happy New Year! This first New Arrivals list of 2008 is, we think, a good one! Starting stuff off right with not one but two Circle releases, among other things. We'll get to those goodies in a minute. First though we hope everyone had fun, safe holidays. Those of us who didn't get away like Andee, whose mother and brother came for a visit, had a nice time here. Those of us who did go someplace had a fine Yule too, with no snowstorms trapping anybody in any airports or anything. Also we'd like to take this opportunity to officially welcome to the AQ-fold our latest employee, Michael, who hails from far-off Halifax. Canadian pop heaven, Sloan, Eric's Trip, Jale, Hardship Post, he's been regaling Andee with fantastic pop tales since he got here a few weeks ago, and if you've been in the store lately you've probably made his acquaintance (he's the perky fellow with the impressive mustache). He actually drummed in the Boredoms' 77 Boadrum with Andee, which is where they met and hit it off. I came to light that Michael was heading to SF and looking for a job and well, here we are! Mailorder customers will also get to interact with Michael too as he'll be helping out Christine and Cup in that department, among other duties. He's super nice and a great addition to our staff, we think you'll agree. Oh, and it's time for us to ask you to start sending in your 2007 Top Tens. You saw our staff faves for last year on the last list we sent out at the end of December, so now we want yours. Email 'em to store@aquariusrecords with the subject header "2007 Customer Faves", ok? They don't have to be just ten but if possible try to keep your lists from being TOO epic, as when we compile them later that will be a help. In the body of the email, please put your name, and then your list of '07 favorites. We'll put them all together on our website, hopefully quicker than we managed last year (like, before summer!). And as always, we'll be randomly picking 2 lucky contributors to recieve $25 AQ gift certificates. The deadline for entries is the end of January. Thanks! Another reminder, for Bay Area locals: the still-fairly-mysterious Jandek is playing in San Francisco tomorrow, Saturday January 12th, at the Swedish American Hall. Some tickets are still available at the door (we won't have any left here tomorrow though). One of those not to be missed experiences, we reckon. And another locals only note: there's a good chance we'll be closing early on Tuesday, January 15th, for some belated inventory action... so if you're planning on dropping by after 5pm that day, maybe call first to find out if we're open. Ok, on to the new arrivals summary... Two Records Of The Week this time. First, GERONIMO! From LA, this new band deals out heavy, noisy, rhythmic post-rock, not unlike Man Is The b*****d doing This Heat covers... pretty incredible, in fact you might have noticed it was at the top of Andee's Top Ten for 2007, basically his Record of the Year. Some of the rest of us might just go ahead and put it on our top ten of 2008 since we're just listing now. Meanwhile, our second Record Of The Week is the latest from an old AQ fave, the always stellar minimalist "jazz" trance-inducers, Australia's The Necks. Exceedingly lovely and mesmeric this one. Moving on to the Highlights, what have we got? A lot! 5000 Fingers Of Dr. T: the soundtrack to this Seussian classic! Acre: some amazing blissed out"floor-core". Ashes: from Supernal, damaged black metal and droning black bliss! Aidan Baker: limited and lovely drones on the latest cd from AQ staple AB. Boredoms: live in "Sun Flancisco" import DVD + bonus 2 song "breakbeat" cd! Brandstifter: cd-r documenting the sounds of turntables and plastic angels! Andrew Chalk: more drones from the master! Circle "Telescope": sprawling double live cd from these Finnish hypnorockers! Circle "Tulikoria": now on ltd. edition vinyl with bonus 7"! Coconut: triple cd-r from this local DIY arty outfit, like Deerhoof meets Gastr Del Sol! Roger Doyle: brilliant experimental rumble from this untrendy composer. 0============0 0====================0 0==== Aquarius Records ====0 0======== New Arrivals #284 ========0 0==== January 25 2008 ====0 0====================0 0============0 0====0 Beloved Customers and Friends: Rainy days here in San Francisco, which lend themselves to staying indoors and listening to MUSIC! Handy that since we had a list to do this week and there was lots of stuff to listen to, good stuff as usual. More on all that in a sec. We'll try to keep this intro brief anyway, as we're running a bit late tonight. Which is too bad, 'cause we're missing our coworker Matt's band Wildildlife playing at Gilman, also Cameron's band Hours Of Worship opening for the Gui Boratto show someplace in the city. Heck but it's raining anyway and we probably wouldn't have gone out. We being Andee and Allan who are trying to get this list finished up and sent out before 3am, if possible... It's gonna be close... A word to mailorder customers, some sad news for you all. Your beloved Christine, she of the AQ mailorder dept. whom you've been sending your emails to and fro, is moving on to another job. She's sad too, she'll miss you all, but career decisions must be made. Sadly AQ isn't in a position to pay quite as much as some larger, more corporate businesses... Thus she couldn't pass up the opportunity to take an interesting job at Apple, where we wish her the best of luck. Of course, many of you are acquainted with the other members of our mailorder staff who've been handling orders and emails too, namely Cup and Michael, and we're sure they'll be fine replacements for dear Christine in your lives. And if any of Christine's peeps were in the midst of personal correspondence with her and don't want to lose touch, here's an email where you can reach her to say ciao or whatever: [email protected]. And a word to locals (and those within driving distance, or who might be visiting): we've got an instore performance coming up from AQ fave James Blackshaw! He of the wonderful Fahey-esque new weird folk guitar playin'. Definitely one of the best, and one of our favorites. Tuesday, February 5th, 6pm. We'll send out a reminder closer to the date of course. All right, now to this list's music.... starting with three, count 'em three, Records Of The Week this week! One's sort of a Box Set Of The Week, or Book and Two CDs of the Week: the Victrola Favorites compilation on Dust-To-Digital, an incredible collection of old time 78 cuts from around that world, something that's sonically -and- visually gorgeous and fascinating. Writing a review almost seemed superfluous since WE all knew we wanted it just from laying eyes on the thing. Highly recommended. Then there's the limited edition Root Strata cd reissue of the previously vinyl only and out of print The Anchorite album by AQ fave Steven R. Smith (Thuja, Hala Strana, etc.). A dreamy dark soundworld made from instruments ethnic and invented. And also we've picked the latest from the Magnetic Fields as our third Record Of The Week. Before we get to the list, special thanks and lots of love to aQ pal Brett, who befriended Andee and Allan, and offered access to his awesome and kick ass home arcade. Many hours were spent playing tons of old favorites, Food Fight, Journey, Discs Of Tron, Star Wars, Robotron, Gorf, Quantum, Mad Planets, Q-Bert, Kick, Popeye and tons of pinball too!! We're really hooked now. And if anyone out there is interested in helping Andee open an arcade/bar definitely get in touch... Okay, enough. There's much music to dig, so dig we shall... ------------------------------ And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. [] <> <> [] <> <> [] <> <> Aquarius Records [] <> <> New Arrivals #285 [] <> <> 08 February 2008 [] <> <> [] <> <> [] <> <> Beloved Customers and Friends: Welcome to another AQ-list! Good stuff we hope you'll find as always. Three records of the week, a zillion highlights, and the remainder is pretty cool too. Meant to mention this last week: in case you've been wondering, no we didn't open up another shop over on Castro Street. Why would you think this? Well 'cause right now Gus Van Zandt is shooting a biopic about Harvey Milk (the tragically assassinated San Francisco supervisor / gay rights hero, not the band), starring Sean Penn. And back in the '70s, Aquarius was once located right next door to Harvey Milk's camera shop on Castro Street. So the movie folks have recreated the '70s Castro street scene, including creating a sorta "psychedelic" looking imaginary mock up of the Aquarius storefront in its old spot. Look for it in the film when it comes out, eventually. They even called us to see if we had an old sign they could use, we didn't, so they made their own. Reminds us that one of these days, we'd like to put together a page on our website getting in depth into Aquarius' lengthy history. Even some of us who have been here for over a decade have a lot to learn! Thanks to everyone who sent in their 2007 Top Tens before our Feb. 1st deadline. We'll be compiling them to put 'em up on our website soon (as quick as we can, seriously). And also randomly selecting our two gift certificate winners... but it's getting late now so we'll do it next week, ok? And also all you mailorder folks, thanks for bearing with us the last two weeks while we transitioned to a new mailorder team here at AQ. We're still playing catch up just a little bit but things ARE improving... we really appreciate everyone's patience, and your understanding of the fact that 'cause of the, ah, unique way we do things here at AQ (like, writing all these crazy reviews) we sometimes get a bit behind in some other areas. We know you wouldn't want us to put off doing a list just to answer your emails, or vice versa, so we try to do it all, but as you may or may not know, we are a pretty small operation. Getting bigger and better all the time though we hope, and we couldn't do it without you! Locals, we're having another instore performance this Sunday. SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! Please come down and check it out: two short sets beginning at 4pm Sunday February 10th by Jozef Van Wissem -- avantgarde classical lute (yes, lute!) improviser from Holland. Tetuzi Akiyama -- onkyo acoustic guitar experimentalist from Japan. anyone into the "wooden guitar" type of thing should dig this, we're pretty excited. Also thanks to everybody who showed up for the very well-attended and totally amazing instore performance that British 12-string guitar picker James Blackshaw graced us with this past Tuesday. We took some pictures and video, perhaps we'll get it up on our website one of these days... And thanks to AQ pal Kurt Wolff, who wrote up the instore, and said some awful sweet things about aQ. Check it out: http://music.download.com/8301 Also, we're happy to be co-presenting the Huun Huur Tu show on February 26th at the Great American Music Hall. Huun Huur Tu are one of the most important groups from Tuva, and masters of throat singing, their music is haunting and mysterious, gorgeous and totally unique. We saw them the last time they were here and it was one of the best shows we had EVER seen. We're giving away two pairs of tickets, so if you want a chance at those tix, send an email to [email protected] with: HUUN HUUR TU TIX in the subject line, will pick out two names at random, each person will get a pair of tickets! Be sure to include your full name, email and phone number. As we said, three (3) Records Of The Week. One from a prevous ROTW honoree, Nada Surf. Awesome pop music, maybe the pop record of the year so far. Also, weirdo popster (and part of the Paw Tracks family) John Maus steps out with his amazing solo disc, another contender for pop record of the year, but WAY weirder. And thirdly, at long last a proper reissue of the hard-to-find debut Deadboy And The Elephantmen album, now credited to band leader Dax Riggs. And the zillion Highlights: Acid Mothers Temple x 2: a heavy duty new disc from the Japanese psychedelic templars -and- an expanded cd reissue of an old vinyl classic! Amesoeurs / Valfunde: Killer barely metal split from big time aQ faves and their weirder alter ego. Featuring folks from Alcest and Peste Noire! =-_-=-_-=-_-=-_-= Aquarius Records _-=-_-=-_-=-_-=-_ New Arrivals #286 =-_-=-_-=-_-=-_-= 22 February 2008 _-=-_-=-_-=-_-=-_ Beloved Customers and Friends: Hola! It's been a bustlin' two weeks here at AQ since our last list. Lots of good music hitting the store, even today some big deliveries left us scrambling (with some success) to get even more new stuff reviewed for today's list. And we've got a fresh new employee helping us out. Say hi to Frank! Please don't get him confused with other relatively recent hire, Michael, 'cause they both sport handsome mustaches. What's less fun is that we suffered through a day or two of minor computer headaches that backed our mailorder processing up a bit (sorry), but we've caught up with that. Darn PCs. Making things much more cheerful was the latest in our recent string of cool instore performances. Last week we hosted the wonderfully poppy Oneone, featuring members of Deerhoof, Tenniscoats, and Coconut. Thanks to everyone who attended, it was a good crowd. Upcoming on the instore tip, Jeremy Jay (March 8th) and Nadja (March 22nd). We'll send out email reminders about those. And there are some future instores percolating that will blow minds. And in one case ear drums too probably. We don't want to say too much until things are more solid, but we can say that this is probably just the First Utterance you'll hear from us about one of them. And for the other, we of course hope attendees will shower the performers with Courtesy And Good Will. Ahem. Anyway, back to business. Thanks to Colin Chang for filming the awesome James Blackshaw instore. Have a peep here: Part 1 - http://ctc23.blip.tv/file Part 2 - http://ctc23.blip.tv/file Part 3 - http://ctc23.blip.tv/file Part 4 - http://ctc23.blip.tv/file Ok, let's talk Records Of The Week. There's two this time 'round. Cave: Killer spaced out, sweat soaked, dual drummered, kraut flecked, blown out basement hypnojams from this Warhammer 48K sideproject. An lp that comes with a companion cd with the whole record digitized for your iPodding convenience. The Goslings: Latest from these modern noise rock shoe gaze deconstructionists. As beautiful as it is brutal. And as usual, we've got another huge "Highlights" list. Lots of good stuff -- heck there's new records from Earth, Boris (a 7"), Fennesz (also a 7"), Thuja, Mountain Goats, and... Zarach'Baal'Tharagh!!! Among others. Hopefully this quick rundown of the more crucial list entries, with one-sentence descriptors, is helpful to you all, though of course reading the ENTIRE AQ-list, every word of all our reviews, eveything, is mandatory. You never know what you might miss! Plus you'll find some cool stuff in the non-highlighted section as well. So here are the highlights: AFCGT: The A Frames team up with the Climax Golden Twins, for some twisted noisy brilliance. Agitated Radio Pilot / The Nether Dawn: dreamy split cd-r by likeminded folks from NZ and Ireland. Ajilvsga: utterly limited cassette of drilling drone doom from Digitalis' Brad Rose. Angel: evocative desert dronescapes from Pan Sonic side project. Atlas Sound: indie pop meets analog soundscapery in this solo project from Deerhunter dude. Belong: super limited all psych-pop covers 12" record by these lovely dronesters. Bixobal: 2nd issue of this very AQ-ish music zine with Sun City Girls/ Climax Golden Twins connections. And speaking of winners, mailorder customers Kraig Keller and Denman Anderson were the two lucky recepients of $25 AQ gift certificates, randomly selected from the pool of peeps who sent in their 2007 Top Ten lists before our deadline last month. Thanks again to everybody who shared their lists (often with more than ten items, and often with interesting and/or entertaining commentary). You're all tops with us. You can view the collected 2007 Customer Top tens here: http://www.aquariusrecords.org Finally, if you're looking for something to read on the web, check out this link: http://www.lovemuzzle.org/ A pretty fun and fascinating interview with the members of Hammers Of Misfortune, and a bit with Andee discussing music and metal and other random stuff. .'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.' '.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'. .'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.' '.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'.'. Beloved Customers and Friends: Welcome once again to the latest installment in the continuing saga known as the Aquarius Records New Arrivals list. Our last list, a fortnight ago, got a tremendous response and we're hoping that you'll be just as excited with this one, there's definitely some treats on it. Before getting to the reviews, though, some other items. First off, if you're local, a reminder that we've got an instore performance Saturday at 1pm by K Records recording artist and young pop hearthrob Jeremy Jay. A bunch of you are probably at his show tonight (a bunch of AQ staffers are there right now, with just a skeleton crew here finishing up the list, namely Andee and Allan) but we're all looking forward to seeing him here at the store tomorrow. And speaking of instores, we'll also be hosting Nadja in a few weeks, March 22nd to be precise. With more excitement upcoming, as we hinted last time. It's been a busy couple weeks here as usual. Things are going good. Lots of cool new music kicking our asses. We're saddened however, by the loss of two cultural heroes: William F. Buckley Jr. and E. Gary Gygax, R.I.P. Neither of them have anything to do with music, but still a big deal. Well for Allan especially. He'd even recently started playing D&D again... Also, fans of noisemakers the Starving Weirdos should check out this interview with the band on Aq pal ROger's killer website: http://www.musiquemachine.com Next week, Allan's off to SXSW in Austin, pretending he's on a business trip. Perhaps he'll see some shows or something to report on, next list. He hears there's this cool band called Wildildlife playing... The rest of us will be here minding the store and gathering up goodies for the next list. Ok, now down to business: The Record Of The Week. It's the long- awaited, third solo album from Scott Tuma, formerly of Souled American. And the man responsible for two of our favorite records of the last 5 or 6 years. This one is another fantastic disc of introspective abstract countrifed folk, but tweaked and twisted, washed out and weary, drone-y and delightful, a sound that is so completely his and his alone! Then, the usual avalanche of Highlights. Let's see: John Luther Adams: Another gorgeous chunk of modern composition from this Alaskan composer. Alter Ego: Fuzzy playful slightly f**ked electronic synth jams for fans of Justice and Basement Jaxx and other dancefloor madness. Arcade Ambiance: Cd-r of video arcade soundz circa '83: Burgertime, Dig Dug, Elevator Action, Galaga, Joust... Avsolutized: Insane Japanese black metal, buzzing and blasting with awesomely over the top operatic vocals. Bad Acid: Mind blowing collection of metal / stoner rock / prog, in the form of a 70 minute dvd, an 11 hour mp3 cd and a big ol' magazine! Beach House: More dreamy bliss from these aQ faves. Behmothaur: Second release from these Kiwi blacknoise ritualists. Limited and in super sw**k packaging. Sir Richard Bishop: An eye popping film from this Sun City Girl, with bonus cd of a formerly lp only disc long out of print! Boscoe: Another killer jazz funk reissue! Don Cherry: Awesome record from this jazz legend, another record that is not just jazz, but some modern world music. Gorgeous and mind blowing. Cindytalk x 2: These legendary gothic dark pop masterpieces available again for the first time in ages. Danava: Heavy and groovy and fuzzy and so kick ass! Long awaited new album. Roberta Flack: An old soul fave (Ms. Flack's debut) we want to give its due! Gargotheron: Damaged drone-y primitive raw black metal from ARIZONA!!! Killer packaging. GazHeart: ltd. Locust vinyl from David Nuss (NNCK) and artist Rita Ackerman (Angelblood). Graveyard: Swedish psych doom stoner Half Makeshift: One of our favorite abstract drone-crawl outfits offers up another disc of roiling black throb and shimmering minimal heaviness. Clutchy Hopkins: Killer instrumental funk jazz, perhaps the work of some mysterious cave dwelling crate digger??? Horseflesh: Incredibly dense and expansive buzzing synthscapes from this local outfit. I Shalt Become: Legendary USBM available on cd for the first time. Blissed out dour miserablism, doomy and dark and so beautiful. Imahori Tsuneo Yoshida Tatsuya: 2nd album of hyperprog genius from post-Ruins duo. Indian Jewelry: Old record from this current fave from back when they were sax flecked no-wave. Weird and wonderful. Groovy, funky but still noisy and heavy. Irr. App. (Ext.) / Panicsville: Killer split, one side from Nurse WIth Wound cohort Irr. App. (Ext.), the other werido noise makers Panicsville. A surprisingly good match. Jabladav x 2: One single drunken disc and one double cd-r new album, from Weakling obsessed black metal weirdo. Klimek: latest Kompakt blissout from our favorite Pop Ambient artist, in tribute to their favorites... Li Jianhong: ltd. aRCHIVE release of heavy Chinese psych-drone guitar, Feedbacker style. LSD-Pond: ltd. aRCHIVE release teaming LSD-march with Bardo Pond! Messiah Complex: Two disc sprawl of slow building electronic noise- drone, minimal with bits of explosive fury. Mystified: Another gorgeous disc of ultra minimal rumble and whir. Nargaroth: a weirdly introspective and Vietnam-obsessed DVD from this one-man black metal act. Natural Snow Buildings: You're heard ABOUT them, now's your chance to actually hear them. Gorgeous. Nekrasov: Australian black metal misanthropy with plenty of noise and drone tangled up in the buzz and blast. Njiqahdda: New album of blissed out krautrock flecked UN-black metal buzz. Ondo: Swedish dark ambient, electronic metallic meditations. Procer Veneficus: Santa Cruz based black metaller, reinterprets classical favorites and transforms them into gorgeous minimal dreamlike drones. Raveonettes: bubblegum + distortion = best yet from these occasional AQ pop faves. Renderizors: NZ downer drone indie psych by the Sandoz Lab Techs + The Renderers! Dax Riggs: Newest solo album from ex-Acid Bath / Deadboy And The Elephantmen singer. Seefeel: BACK IN STOCK! the deluxe reissue of Quique, a previous Record of the Week. Shocking Pinks: DFA + Flying Nun? Somnam: Goblinesque soundscapes from new Paradigms signing. Steel An' Skin: EM Records 3rd steel drum reissue, '70s UK reggae/dub/ disco + DVD! Sun City Girls: singles collection vol. 1, from the Torch Of The Mystics sessions! Nicholas Szczepanik x 2: aQ customer makes us proud with two discs of gorgeous sound manipulations and field recordings. tH.: Limited 3" cd-r of noisy buzz and brzzt! Tropes: Super dreamy disc from German soundscapers, on Paradigms. Twinsistermoon: Limited cd release of organic folky drone songsmithery. Ulaan Khol: first in a trilogy of heavy-drone-bliss outings by AQ fave Steven R. Smith. V/A Bippp: killer comp of French new wave synth action '77 - '85 + an Ed Banger bonus... V/A Messthetics #104: late '70s DIY arty post punk outta Wales, many a gem on here. V/A Obsession: excellent international psych/prog rarities collection. V/A Pop Made In France: '70s Gallic groove and psych pop comp. Valet: 2nd Kranky disc of synth psych pop drone from Portland noise- lady. Caetano Veloso: 1971 Tropicalia-in-exile album from the legendary Veloso reissued. Scott Walker 1,2,3 and 4: YES! Vinyl editions of these classics! Peter Wright: ltd. aRCHIVE release from a fave NZ dronester. Ya Ho Wa 13: domestic reissue of Penetration, the best album by Father Yod's psych crew. There's lots more beyond the highlights, we'd tell you more about them, but were trying to make it to bed before 4 am for the first time in, well, far too long. But it's all right there below this introduction. So read on and enjoy! There's much to dig as always. Hopefully we'll be asleep soon. And even more hopefully, maybe we'll see you tomorrow for the instore. Otherwise, in two weeks we will come to you again with the usual overload or aural delights... -----------------||| Aquarius Records
-----------------||| New Arrivals #288 -----------------||| 21 March 2008 Beloved Customers and Friends: Greetings! Has it really been two weeks since our last list? Time flies when you're having fun, as some of us (Allan) sure did down in Texas at South by Southwest. He's more or less recovered now... had a blast, saw a lot of great music and soaked up some of the warm sunshine (it was 91 degrees in Austin last Friday!). Soaked up some beer too. The rest of us are jealous. But at least a bunch of us got to see the Boredoms' amazing show at the Fillmore this past Tuesday. Even Allan went, the incredible energy of the Boredoms three-drum-kit and seven-necked-guitar setup healing any excessive show-going burnout... So, here's Allan's brief SXSW report: First off, it was cool to meet so many folks who had nice things to say about Aquarius, thanks! Of course, Austin itself has some great record stores. I got to check out a fairly new one, End Of An Ear. Very cool shop. It's not far from the place I had the best lunch on my trip, at Torchy's Tacos (thanks to Brian Turner from WFMU for taking me there). As for bands I saw, well don't even get me started... any day you can see Enslaved at an outdoor party and then walk a few blocks to see The Homosexuals right afterwards, I'm happy. Some other highlights for me included Witch, Birds Of Avalon, and, at a backyard party, Israel's utterly insane Monotonics (where a goat tried to nibble on my pants during the drummer's crowd surfing drum solo). Also, AQ alumnus Matt was there with his band Wildildlife, we hung out a bunch but I didn't get to see them play unfortunately. However Matt and I did get to see Harvey Milk together, which is just about Matt's favorite band ever. He was losing his mind. And yeah, they were great. We all can't wait 'til they come out here!! Whew, well we've got a rockin' list this week we think. Check it out. First off, thee Records Of The Week are these two: Power Pill Fist: Black Moth Super Rainbow bass player gets all Atari 2600 on our asses and WE LOVE IT!! Axolotl x 3: Three new cd-rs from one of our favorite noisemakers on his new label. Barn Owl: Brand new tape of murky beauty from this SF psych drone folk combo. Black Moth Super Rainbow: Our favorite slab of bubbled gum electro synth pop dreaminess on vinyl. Scatch and sniff cover! Blue Sabbath Black Cheer: New vinyl brutality from these Northwestern doomlords. Their heaviest yet. Karl Bosmann: Gorgeously packaged lp of dark shimmering drones and dirgey doom. Cave: A recent record of the week back in print again!! Cavity: A decades old disc from these genius masters of sludge doom grind thrash heaviness reissued and revamped. John Coltrane: Reissue of one of the jazz giant's classics, Africa/ Brass. Julian Cope: The mindboggling Japrocksampler book finally reprinted. Crebain / Leviathan: This legendary split available on lp just one last time. Super limited AGAIN. Egypt: Groovy stoner doom from North Dakota. Nineties archival lp only release, incredible packaging. Encomiast: More blissed out loveliness and latest on Crucial Bliss. Fairport Convention x 2: Two legendary British folk essentials reissued and available again. f**k Buttons: Super hyped band that actually deserves it. Boredoms meets Black Dice tripped out synth drone heaviness. Gang Wizard: Live disc of utter guitar drum battle chaos from this horde of noisy b*****ds. Iron Bitchface: First full length cd of Canadian techno grind black metal madness. Islaja: More fluttering dreamy dark Finnish beauty, performed live by the lovely Islaja. Rene Joly: Mysterious French prog pop genius, for fans of Gerald Manset and Antony. Manilla Road: True metal! Tales of Vikings in Mexico and other metal madness... Out of print cd-r available on lp for the first time. Yeti #5: Return of maybe the finest music and arts magazine going, comes with a cd packed with killer exclusives. Zombie Battle Axe: Creepy soundscapes of synths and field recordings, like a lost Argento soundtrack. Spooky!! And then there's quite a few other things elsewhere on the list that may prove of interest... vinyl hounds of the metallic persuasion, look out for LP versions of recent albums by Danava, Skeletonwitch, and Saviours... also vinyl for the recent Valet and more... Acid Mothers Temple fanatics, check the dvd section... for acidfolkfans, there's a disc of Tyrannosaurus Rex demos... plus a new issue of The Wire, a new album from Canuk faves Destroyer, and a surprising new Dirtbombs, amongst plenty more... (And fyi, there's some other vinyl goodies in stock but not reviewed this time 'round, that you might want to know about: reissues of XO and Figure 8 by Elliott Smith, and a 10" picture disc by The Sword... as always, worth looking through the extensive "instock, but not reviewed" section towards the end of this list.) Ok, on with the list itself in a sec, but before we wrap up this introduction, we should remind y'all to stop down tomorrow, Saturday March 22nd, at 4pm to see the mighty Canadian dronedoom lords Nadja perform an instore at AQ. And then, mark your calendars for next Wednesday, March 26th, 'cause we're gonna have warped pop magican John Maus down here at 6 o'clock pm doing an instore too! Both of 'em major AQ faves, so we're pretty excited. Two more items of business. First off, BORIS BORIS BORIS. No, not on this list. But soon, real soon, we'll have the Japanese import of their new cd Smile with the fancy pants Japanese packaging. And also a new 12" too. We know how excited some of you get about this band, so we'll probably send out a special email about 'em if we get them in before the next list. And, for those who are into Andee's label tUMULt, here's a link to click: http://www.digitalisindustries whichlh=77. It'll take you to an interview that Foxy Digitalis was kind enough to do with Andee about tUMULt. Okay. We're gonna try to get this wrapped up, and maybe get home before 2am (a record!!) especially since we have to be back here tomorrow for the Nadja instore. Woo hoo! See you there. And if not, it's only a couple weeks until list #289! ------------------------------ And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. Machinefabriek: After a break, we're back to digging the deep dark sounds of Machinefabriek. This is a cd-r of collected soundtracks. So lovely. Junko Manuki: Newest in Tiliqua Records' series of unearthed Japanese erotic rarities. This one is as good as any of the others, although a bit more perverted, with plenty of spanking and whipping! Marzuraan: An archival trawl through the vaults of this amazing UK dirge drone noise rock ensemble, includes covers of Loop and Rollins Band! Nadja: Newest disc from this Canadian doombliss duo, more of that lurching slow motion blown out beautiful buzz... Seth Nehil & Jgrzinich: Manipulated field recordings from these two master sound manipulators. Nostradamos: Legendary greek seventies psychedelic gem reissued! Washington Phillips: Another Mississippi record release, 12 tracks from this legendary bluesman, whose instrument of choice is quite strange. Powers Court: Latest from this female fronted kick ass dark power metal trio! Prurient: CD+5" vinyl of beautiful crushing caustic noise from Prurient, who is fast becoming out favorite purveyor of noisemusic. sh*tmat / Ladyscraper: Grungecore! Two gabber jungle freeks rip apart Nirvana classics. Real flannel shirt sleeves! Elliott Smith x 2: Two of our favorite records, available on vinyl for the first time since they were released (and we've got the cds too!) Howard Stelzer: Awesome collection of experimental tape music, mature noise! Striborg: Final installment in a comprehensive reissue campaign, 2005 album Trepidation from this one man Tasmanian rain forest black metal band! The Stumps: New Zealand super group offers up another fantastic slab of sound, chaotic garage rock clatter meets weirdo drone meets gritty grimey drifty ambience. SUNNO))): Their 00Void album, Japanese reissue with a bonus disc containing the whole record remixed by Nurse With Wound! Tymah: Female fronted black metal buzz from the dark forests of Transylvania. V/A Bearded Ladies: Modern day fringe folk meets classic female folk. V/A Juche: Industrial darkwave comp all about some weird North Korean communist ideology/philosophy??? V/A Last Kind Words: Newest release from the seemingly infallible Mississippi Records. Old timey blues, cover art by Chris Johanson. V/A Nigeria Disco Funk Special: Another killer comp of, well, just like the titles says... Verdunkeln: Awesome gothy doomy avant black metal dirge from Germany. Some of the coolest weirdest stuff we've heard in ages. Woods Of Infinity: Dirgey, melancholy f**ked up black metal weirdness from this strange strange Swedish outfit. And plenty more, seriously you gotta read the whole dang list so you don't miss nothin'. Not to mention the end-of-this-list list of "Also New In Stock, Not Reviewed" items where you'll find such treats as *another* new Sublime Frequencies release (Shadow Music Of Thailand, LP-only), a Japanese prog/psych summit (Tatsuya Yoshida + Keiji Haino), and the J2 disc, Justin Broadrick of Jesu teamed up with Jarboe from the Swans! Plus new Striborg, Dodos, A Silver Mt. Zion, and tons more we'll try to get to next time if we can!! That's it. Thanks as always to all our faithful loyal aQ customers. Have a great weekend. Enjoy the list, and all the crazy awesome sounds within! Until next time... ------------------------------ And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. Hey there everybody, welcome to another update, full of drone and pop and everything in between (or at the same time). Lots of great stuff, including, among other things, both Boris and Bill Cosby (no, not together). Hope you all have had a pleasant fortnight since our last list, we've been keeping busy as usual round these parts, enjoying music new and old but certainly NOT enjoying the behavior of a couple of our computers. This week we had to have the hard drive replaced in the iMac that Cup and Michael use to deal with mailorder, which got us about two days behind in responding with mailorder related emails, we're sorry about that!! Considering we're already not entirely where we want to be in terms of response-time, that didn't help. Fortunately, at least we were able to catch the problem in that computer before any data was lost. Then, the same day that got fixed, Allan's personal laptop up and died. Thus this list is short a couple of reviews he'd written but not yet saved into our database here at work... hopefully they'll be recovered (or he'll rewrite them...) in time for our next list. Two Records Of The Week. One, a three-way split featuring two recent AQ faves and a related third party, it's Isengrind / Twinsistermoon / Natural Snow Buildings! The first proper cd release from this French duo, and each member's equally gorgeous solo project. Our second RotW is a bit of a no-brainer, the long-awaited, eagerly-anticipated new album from Portishead! Yep, it's good. And then let's have a look at the Highlights, as follow... Acid Mothers Temple: Kawabata & Co.'s HEAVIEST trip yet, like SUNNO))) + Amon Duul... ?? Plus other goodies including Alan Sparhawk's rockin' Retribution Gospel Choir, the Secret Chief's playing Masada with Zorn on board, a grime fix from Dizzee Rascal, a new issue of Wax Poetics, and lots more. Also, we have tickets to give away to some cool shows at the Great American Music Hall. First we have one pair of tickets to see Subtle, Facing New York and Clue to Kalo on Wed. May 7 Then we have two pairs of tickets to see The Fiery Furnaces and Grand Ole Party, on Thurs. May 29th. Just send an email to [email protected] with either FIERY FURNACES TIX or SUBTLE TIX as the subject. We'll pick the Subtle ticket winners right away since it's next week. The Fiery Furnaces you have a little more time. Both shows should be awesome! Finally, there's a new episode of XLR8R TV up, which features Bradford Cox from Atlas Sound and Deerhunter shopping and hanging out at aQ!! Check it out here: That's it. Time for us to head home and get to bed. And time for you night owls to stay up all night reading this here list and listening to sound clips! Or maybe better to hit the hay and get up early and tackle it first thing in the morning. Either way, lots of good stuff to check out as always! So let's get on with it! Enjoy! --------------------------------------------------------------- And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. So thanks. ((+:+:+:+:+:+ Beloved Customers and Friends: Whew! If you live in San Francisco, we don't have to tell you it's been sunny and HOT here this week. Record breaking temperatures for this time of year, way up in the 90s. We're wilting as we write this. And the sun went down long ago! Of course, being SF, it'll probably get nice and cold and foggy again real soon. So we should try and enjoy this blast of summer-like weather while we can, though it did threaten to make Andee's computer at home overheat while he was trying to write reviews. He still got a bunch done though, as you will see... Whatever it's like where you are, though, we hope you're in the mood for some cool new music. Drones, black metal, unblack metal, jazz, indie-rock, psych, doom, grunge, we got all that and more this list. Lots and lots of good stuff. So, let's get on with it... 'Cause we're a little crazy from the heat, there's three Records Of The Week this week!!! First, the new one from Philip Jeck: a no brainer, maybe, since we love Jeck and his crackly, fuzzy turntable collages so much, but his new album is kinda different yet as amazing as ever. And of course LOADS of highlights: Patrick Adams: anthology of disco jams from the master producer. And of course, much much more. Anthony Braxton on laptop and giant sax, folk-blues from Tetuzi Akiyama, a new Nachtmystium ep, the sheer '80sishness of Cut Copy, etc. etc. and etc. And as we mentioned briefly above. We are listing the super deluxe double lp / 7" version of the most recent record from German black metallers Ruins Of Beverast. Tons of people have been emailing about it, and we will indeed be one of the only stores carrying it, BUT, because they are so expensive, and handmade, and of course because of the sh*tty dollar, and the outrageous shipping on these massive sets, the price is pretty high. SO if you want one you MUST preorder it. We will only order as many copies as we get actual preorders for. And we will take a $50 deposit, the rest payable when we ship. Check the review for all the details! Krautrock fans, don't forget about the Cluster shows happening 'round California (LA, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, SF) next weekend, as well as a CLUSTER AQ INSTORE! Details at the bottom of this list. Okay. We gotta get to bed. Must get some sleep. We have some BBQ-ing to do tomorrow, and some ping pong practice, since we've been challenged by Ritual coffee shop across the street! AND The Black Hole is playing tomorrow at the Castro Theater! Can't wait! That's it. Dig in. And STAY COOL! --------------------------------------------------------------- And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. YOU!! And as always, please realize that we work really hard on the list, so if you find out about stuff through us, please try to buy your records from us. Greetings aQ faithful! We are honored to announce a very very rare instore performance from spaced out electronic ambient krautrock pioneers: CLUSTER!!! Performing right here in our little ol' shop!! It's on Monday, that's memorial day, the 26th of May. 5:00 pm. They're playing a bunch of shows, Big Sur, Santa Cruz and at the Great American Music Hall here in SF. But this might be your only chance to sit on the floor, mere inches from the band, letting the sound wash over you, and most likely one of your only chances to say hi, shake hands and mingle with the band afterwards. Not sure what they'll be playing, but for those new to Cluster and who are curious, here's our review of the reissue of their classic Zuckerzeit album: Finally! We can't even begin to tell you how long we have been waiting to list this. Forever going in and out of print and when available it was always super expensive, Cluster's 1974 album Zuckerzeit has finally been given the proper and readily available reissue (Thanks Revisited!) it absolutely deserves. Probably our favorite Cluster album, it is most notably famous for helming their transition from concrete synth dronescapers to their more well known persona as crafters of pastorally cosmic electronica. Adding crisp and propulsive drum programming to their haunting synth melodies, Moebius and Roedelius split the composing duties with Moebius leaning to the more experimental while Roedelius provides the melodic sheen. Zuckerzeit hailed a new direction and focus in German music of the early seventies, with groups like Kraftwerk, and Neu moving through similar reshapes in sound. Obviously, Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin have spent some time absorbing this album. Timeless and classic, we cannot recommend this album enough! And our review of their reissued Sowiesoso album: This long awaited reissue of Cluster’s stellar 1976 recording, Sowiesoso (So Not So So) sees Roedelius and Moebius at their most collaborative and creative. Recorded after moving to the tiny village of Forst from West Berlin, the progressive evolution of Cluster’s solely improvised sound from free-form cavernous synth-scapes to percolating motorik pop had already been documented on their Zuckerzeit album from 1975. On Sowiesoso, that sound gets even more refined, with Moebius’s machinist currents of whirs and klangs jutting up against Roedelius’s serene Eastern pastoralism, resulting in a haunting mix of pensive ambient beauty that matches the idyllic countryside pictured on the front cover. Needless to say, this should be fantastic! Don't miss it!! Lots of love from your devoted AQ staff -- Andee, Cup, Jim, Allan, Irwin, Scott, Lauren, Sally, Antaeus, Michael, Cameron, Frank and Jon |

000000000~~~~~ Aquarius Records ~~~~~000
Apologies for the strangely formatted list we just sent out. You can read about our broken computer woes below, which is why we were trying to send the list remotely from the correct computer, but it went and jumbled it all up. Arggh. Well, really, you should be going to the website anyway, so you can see album covers and listen to sound samples, but in case you prefer the email version here you go. Should look normal. If not, we give up. We're going home and going to bed. Thanks as always. And again apologies for the double shot of New Arrivals... Geeze! Seems almost like THIS week's list is falling on a Friday The 13th. Last list, when it was that unlucky day, we didn't have nearly so many mishaps... Firstly, about a week ago, poor Irwin hurt his back (don't ask him how he did it) and was told to stay off his feet, so he hasn't been at work since then and he's one of our review writing powerhouses. Then, in a freak accident, Andee's desktop computer got knocked over, and has been out of commission ever since (whoops). Fortunately it's gonna get fixed up ok, but in the meantime, he's had no computer here to work on and he's one of our other reviewing powerhouses. And has spent more time running from computer store to computer store than writing reviews. So all that slowed us up a bit, and thus there's "only" 72 items on the list... but we did actually get a few cool things back in stock that had been gone for a while, so that bulked it up a bit, look out for those. Also, since Andee is without computer, much of his day to day stuff is temporarily inaccessible. So if you're waiting for an email, or have PayPal business or anything like that (you know, anything that requires a computer), please be patient, we'll have that computer back and up and running by the middle of next week (barring any more mishaps), and we'll get caught up and sorted out as quick as we can. Another sad thing: we bid adieu to our beloved co-worker Lauren, whom you know if you ever shop here on Tuesday nights. She's been a loyal part-time AQ staffer for three years now, but finally came to the conclusion that working a double shift every week (she has another, full-time job as a speech pathologist) was a bit too much... we understand but are sorry to see her go. On top of all that, 'cause of working late (as usual) on the list tonight, Andee and Allan and the rest of the Friday night crew missed seeing a rare freakin' Liquorball live show at the Hemlock (with special guest Steve Mackay, saxophonist of Stooges Funhouse fame!). Argh. We also missed ex-AQer Matt's band Wildildlife who came down from Seattle to play the Edinburgh Castle tonight too. Double argh. Oh well there's always stuff going on list nights it seems, like Candlemass who we missed last time. Something about Friday nights... And since we sometimes like to give folks a glimpse of what really goes on around here, and what we're -really- listening to, once we finished writing reviews for the list, all we've been listening to is Polvo and Pitchblende!!! It hasn't been all disasters here though, there's been lots of rad music coming in as usual, and in terms of extra-curricular activities, last weekend a couple of us went camping, and new AQ-er Jon's band Barn Owl played with Earth down at Brookdale lodge, and Antaeus' band Lazer Sword got to rock some sort of travelling party bus... good times. Speaking of music, let's talk about this week's list, starting with the Records Of The Week... There's two of 'em, the latest ultra-o'd dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom offering from UK sublime sludge masters Moss, and a rad new Mary Ann Hobbs dubstep/grime comp too. Also, there's a new release on Andee's tUMULt label, the long-awaited domestic debut from PYHA, in the works forever, the buzzingest black metal EVER maybe, made by a 12-year old Korean kid!!!! Really. And then a bunch o' highlights, from the super poppy to the super noisy: Armanenschaft: raw primitive psychedelic winter black metal from ex-Rev. Bizarre doomster. Also: archival Ya Ho Wha music from the Children Of The Sixth Root Race, a new issue of The Wire, Oxbow's Narcotic Story now on vinyl, another Sun Ra reissue, a charming (as always) new Jonathan Richman, new Silver Jews, a Low dvd documentary, and more!! Other notes: be sure to tune in (live on the air, or live over the internets) to KUSF 90.3 FM this Sunday at 10:30am to hear Andee's last ever (at least for a while) "Battleflutes And Sideways Skulls" show. Hopefully you've been listening every week anyway, but if not this is your last chance, 'cause he's retiring from the radio DJ game. At least, until we finally get an AQ podcast thing happening. He'll probably play a lot of grunge on Sunday, seeing as he's headed to Seattle in a few weeks for the big Sub Pop 20th Anniversary celebration. Green River reunion! The Fluid reunion! Red Red Meat reunion! Beachwood Sparks reunion! Les Thugs! Seaweed! The Vaselines first EVER show in the US, TAD'S NEW BAND! We haven't seen Andee this excited for a show since, well, since forever... Also, if you go to http://klaustotheedge.blogspot.com/ you'll find the fancy new blog for Allan and former AQ-er Alison's monthly prog/psych radio show on West Add Radio 93.7 FM, "Klaus To The Edge". The best way to listen is over the internet anyway, and rather than trying to dial it up every third Wednesday at 11pm, you might as well just check out the archived podcasts found here. Hmmm... gotta find the time, maybe we'll get around to making an AQ blog... or even a discussion board! Soon! We promise. Also, not to toot our own horn or anything, but not only did the SF Weekly recently vote us the best record store in SF (we're still blushing), in the new issue of Paste Magazine, we're included in the list of the 17 coolest record stores in the US! Wow! We're honored. Check it out here:: Also, Andee was interviewed for QRD webzine for an article on record stores, along with a bunch of other cool record folks. Okay, it's already 2:30 and we're still putting the finishing touches on the list. Hopefully by the time you get this we'll be in bed and sound asleep. As always, thanks for reading. Oh & everybody enjoy Pride weekend, whatever you're proud of!
And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. Wow, has it really been two whole weeks since our last New Arrivals list?! Well, uh, no not quite. Instead of the usual fortnight, it's only been thirteen days, 'cause we're sending this list out on Thursday rather than Friday (or, to be precise, our usual early a.m. Saturday morning). Why? Partly 'cause the music we wanted to tell you about this time 'round was SO GOOD we just couldn't contain ourselves, of course... but also for a more practical (impractical?) reason. All right. Records Of The Week are... Burning Star Core: Second BSC record to receive ROTW honors, a gorgeous drifty droney krauty masterpiece of violin and more! And, then, if the Pyha from last time wasn't enough, and the Varghkoghargasmal from the list before that, there's -another- cd NEW ON tUMULt!! Like A Kind Of Matador: Pummeling doom prog from the UK, huge riffs, pounding drums, fluttering flute, wheezing accordions, and angelic female vocals. Like Boris+Guapo+BardoPond. Plus the usual plethora of HIGHLIGHTS... AER: Latest in the ltd. edition Touch 7" series, field recording and drones from artist Jon Wozencroft. And more more more. Finally before we get to the list, there's a few special events n' things that we should mention, that locals ought to know about: Our Pals MATMOS are doing a special live performance for Irwin's radio show "Sleeves on Hearts" tomorrow morning, Friday July 11th, at 11am. Tune into KUSF 90.3fm, or got to www.kusf.org to listen online. Also available at itunes...radio..public...kusf Also on Saturday, little girls will be rockin' the Bottom Of The Hill in the afternoon. Former AQ-er Sally has been volunteering to teach drums at the first ever Bay Area Girls Rock Camp!! The girls learn their instruments in the mornings and then spend the afternoons in workshops and mostly practicing with their bands (they form the first day of camp) to write one original song that each band will perform on Saturday, July 12th, 3pm (doors at 2) at Bottom of the Hill! $10-$15 sliding scale. All ages (of course). And then next week, the Mission Creek Music Festival gets under way. Among the many cool shows, our own Jim Haynes will be performing at something called Collision, on Thursday, July 17th. Also appearing on the bill: Sokai Stilhed and darwinsbitch. it's at New Langton Arts, 1246 Folsom Street (between 8th and 9th streets). Doors at 7:30pm, performances at 8pm. $12-$15 sliding scale. For more information on this and other performances at the Mission Creek Music Festival: http://www.mcmf.org Also, later this month, get ready, HARVEY MILK is confirmed for an AQ instore performance!!!! Monday July 28th, at 6pm. Don't miss it. Guaranteed to be our heaviest instore ever... unless we convince them to perform acoustically, which would be rad too!! And also don't miss their show at the Great American Music Hall the night before, Sunday the 27th. And finally, it's official, another Boredoms multiple drummer blow out. This one on the very mystical date of 8.8.08, with 88 drummers this time. Andee and Michael will be doing it again, as will a whole bunch of Bay Area drummers. And West Coasters rejoice! This time it's happening in L.A. More info soon. But as any of you who made it to the 7.7.07 blowout, it will be awesome! Ok, that's about it. On with the list, and enjoy your Friday!!! Andee's off to the airport. And will be sure to report back on his weekend of grunge! So thanks. <><><><><> Beloved Customers and Friends: It used to be that we ended each New Arrivals list with a quote, something we found in a magazine (usually The Wire) or online or something. But also sometimes it was just something funny somebody around here happened to say. Well Andee just made an observation that struck us as good list-quote material, to wit: "The list would be a whole lot easier without pants." We think he meant, he'd like to be able to work on it from home... we think... Anyway, here we are again with a new New Arrivals list! Yay. Let's get right to it, though Andee and Allan have two words for anyone who wonders what they did last weekend: CALIFORNIA EXTREME! They (along with Andee's lady friend Heather) made their first visit to the annual video arcade and pinball game expo in San Jose last Saturday, it was awesome!! We recommend checking it out next year. There were, like, 400 vintage games there, stuff we'd totally forgotten about or never ever before seen (including some one of a kind prototypes). Ok, ok, on with the list... Three, count 'em, three Records Of The Week this week! Quest For Blood: freaked out free jazz flute meets Japanese folk ritual and blasting black metal... Circle's label Ektro put it out, but Andee's jealous tUMULt didn't get to do it! And a whole bunch of Highlights... Absolut Null Punkt: Live electro-industrial improv on the edge of noise from two Japanese heavyweights. And more, more, more, including a new ish of The Wire, Atlas Sound now on vinyl, a lovely new Steel Pan release on EM, hairy hippie heaviness reissued from The Edgar Broughton Band, a new Neubauten, a reissue of Nick Lowe's first album, and ltd. 7" by Texan stoners Tia Caerra covering Lungfish! Among other goodies. Oh and also, among the reviews below, you'll find Allan delving deeply into Dynasty by Kiss.... Ok, before we get on with the list, a few extra items of news and suchlike. You know how we did our list on a Thursday the other week when Andee had to go up to see the Sub Pop festival? Well we're gonna being doing the next list (#298) a few days early as well, fyi. Probably Wednesday, August 6th, instead of that Friday. That's because Andee is going to be in LA that day, 8/8/08 to drum in another Boredrum extravaganza! We mentioned it last time, right? AQ mailorder staffer Michael will also be a participant, as will Cup's special friend and I Am Spoonbender partner Dustin. So the AQ mailorder staff will be taking a little Boredoms vacation for a day or two, but we'll do our best to not have that slow anything up much. And if you're in L.A. be sure to come out for the show. It's at the La Brea Tar Pits! The Boredoms! Tar Pits! Woo Hoo!!!! Speaking of Michael in mailorder, sadly we'll soon be saying adieu to him... he's moving with his girlfriend to Chicago. Andee will be returning to the mailorder desk for a while to help out, and Scott will be pitching in too, until we find a permanent replacement. It's been a blast working with Michael and we wish him luck out in Chicago, where he'll be working in public radio! You local types, there's some stuff going on the next few days you might want to know about. First off, tomorrow, Saturday the 26th, Aquarius is co-presenting a screening of ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL, a really awesome documentary film being shown as part of the Jewish Film Festival. It's at the Castro Theatre, 10pm. We might have mentioned it on this list a few months ago when Andee, Allan and Cup got a chance to see it at a private showing. It's all about the seminal Canadian speed metal band Anvil, still trying to make it big today years and years after their 15 minutes back in the '80s... but you don't have to be a fan of Anvil or even metal to enjoy it. It's brutally funny (in a Spinal Tap sort of way) and also brutally depressing (likewise... 'cause it's real). Anyone in a band, successful or otherwise, will be able to relate to stuff in this movie. But ultimately it's really a touching story of two friends, the two main dudes in Anvil, who fight all the time but really love each other like brothers. We give it hella thumbs up and recommend you see it!! AND, we have three pairs of tickets to give away. First three emails to arrive here with the subject ANVIL TIX!!!! will get a pair. Email your 'entry' to [email protected]. They're actual tickets too, so you'll have to come by the shop and pick them up. Be sure to include your name and email and phone number. Oh and we almost forgot. Lipps and Robb From the band will be there in person along with the director for a Q&A after the film! Plus if you miss the SF screening, or just need to see it again, it'll be playing in the East Bay too. See the end of the list for more details. And in case you had forgotten, this weekend is all about: HARVEY MILK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Their first trip to the West coast EVER. Their first time playing in SF EVER! It's gonna be so amazing. DO NOT MISS IT!! You will regret it forever! Sunday night, at the Great American Music Hall!! With openers Wildildlife, newly relocated to Seattle but coming all the way down here to play this show! And as if ONE Harvey Milk show wasn't enough, they'll also be performing live, right here at aQuarius recOrds, Monday, at 5:00 pm. They'll be vying to steal the crown for loudest instore ever, held for nearly the last decade by Alec Empire. We have a feeling it will be no contest. So don't miss that either. Bring your earplugs, and apologies to our neighbors... And more weekend stuff to do: former AQ staffer and forever awesome chick Sadie Shaw is having a photo show this weekend, exhibiting her glamor pics at The Knockout bar on Mission Street not far from aQ... but it's not just a photo show, it's also a Rock n Roll Dance Party... '60s soul and garage with performances by Ty Segall, DX the Funky Granpa, and a special live secret guest. That's at The Knockout, 3223 Mission St. (at 29th), starting at 8pm on Saturday, July 26th. $5 cover for the entertainment. We're sure it will be fun! Also, if you get a chance, be sure an check out this Striborg primmer and interview our pal Roger put together: Finally, as many of you know, and as was mentioned above, I (Andee) was in Seattle a couple weekends back for the big Sub Pop 20th Anniversary celebration. It was a total blast. Saw Green River who are one of my all time favorite bands and completely destroyed. As did Mudhoney. Seaweed, The Fluid, Red Red Meat, Les Thugs, Eric's Trip, all amazing... There was barely a disappointment the whole weekend. It was WAY too hot, but thankfully there was shade, and that shade was often right over the pit! Also had a huge two story arcade right across the street from my hotel, got to meet Sub Pop head honcho Jon Poneman, wandered around Seattle, saw a comedy show with Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Eugene Mirman and Todd Phillips, got to meet up with our much missed former employee Matt, even managed to buy some records! HUGE thanks to the Sub Pop folks who made me feel at home, Dean, Dean, Chris, Jon and all the people I'm sure I'm forgetting. Will write up a much more detailed review of the trip and the shows once our blog is up and running. SOON! We promise. Jeez that was a long intro. But c'mon, Boredoms, Anvil, Harvey Milk, Striborg, Sub Pop... Anyway, the intro is finally finished. And I know we say this everytime, but holy cow, there's just so much amazing music this week, guess it's best to just get to it...
And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. So thanks. A bunch! --------------------------------------------------------------- As usual, we recommend that instead of reading this email, you click here right now -- http://aquariusrecords.org/cat/newest.html -- to read the New Arrivals list online where you can SEE COVER ART and HEAR SOUNDCLIPS we prepared for you. And don't forget to give our nifty AQ 'radio' thing a try, all the New Arrivals clips in one handy stream: http://aquariusrecords.org/streaming.html |

/\/\/\/\/\ /\/\/\/\/\ Beloved Customers and Friends: Wow, weird. It's a Wednesday! We warned everybody last time, right? We're doing the list a few days early this week 'cause Andee's gotta be in LA on the usual list-Friday for the big Boredoms 8/8/08 Boredrum deal. He's playing in it (drummer number 67) like he did last year in Brooklyn. Since Allan doesn't like to do the list without Andee (in fact, probably couldn't do the list without Andee), we moved it up. But managed to review quite a few of the many rad cds, lps, etc. that have shown up here recently... more on those in a sec. So, Andee's leaving tomorrow to drive down to LA, Cup's going along too 'cause her special friend and I Am Spoonbender bandmate Dustin is also playing at the LA event (he's drummer #63). And very recent AQ alum Michael is also gonna be there (drummer #21). They're definitely gonna have fun. Everybody else here wishes they coulda gone too. Since Andee and Cup will be away, Scott will be attending to your mailorder needs for the next few days. In the week-and-a-half since the last list, things have been hopping. Of course, there were the Harvey Milk shows, hopefully the locals among you came out to see 'em, at the Great American, or The Stork, or here at AQ... Yep, the (1/4th of) Harvey Milk instore the monday before last was fantastic, thanks again to Creston for being such a good sport. He played solo, acoustically, doing a bunch of Harvey Milk numbers, a Leonard Cohen song or two, and finishing up with a charming version of "Three Is A Magic Number", a song we all know and love from Schoolhouse Rocks!! Believe it or not. It was also cool to see our pal, former AQ staffer Matt, back in town with his band Wildildlife to open for Harvey Milk at the GAMH and Stork shows. We miss that guy. The Anvil: The Story Of Anvil documentary at the Castro, co-sponsored by AQ, was also a rousing success. However, Allan was flummoxed afterwards, when on the way out the door, some fellow audience-member happened to ask him about the Anvil t-shirt ("Too Heavy For Whimps!") Allan was wearing. When Allan explained that he'd picked up the shirt at show Anvil had played in San Francisco about ten years ago, the guy looked confused and said, "But they're not a real band, are they?" Somehow this dude had watched the entire movie, AND seen the actual Anvil band members appear on stage in person afterwards for a Q&A, and was still under the mistaken impression that he'd been watching a fictional "mockumentary" a la Spinal Tap! Part of his confusion may have been that Anvil's drummer is coincidentally enough named Robb Reiner, and the band visits the actual Stonehenge while on tour... seeming Spinal Tap references those! But Allan eventually convinced the guy that Anvil is actually a real band. Anyway, such a good movie, look out for it to go on a national "tour" with Anvil playing live after the screenings, that's the plan!! What else? Well pretty much everyone here saw the Dark Knight of course. And then there's music, right? We were listening to a lot of music... here's some of it... THREE Records Of The Week, just like last time!! As follows: And then a plethora of Highlights, of course: Abe Vigoda: Super charged angular punk a la fellow LA noisemakers No Age. And lots more. Including the second installment of Allan's Kiss reviews project (this time: Music From The Elder!). Also, be sure to look at the special section we've put at the end of this week's list, that gives an inventory of all the goodies (books, box sets, etc.) we have behind/above the counter here at AQ... stuff that's easy to overlook in the store, being hard to see and half hidden sometimes. If you want one of those just copy, cut and paste it into the comments section. The used items are obviously the only copies we have, but if we run out of one of the other things you were hoping to grab, we can most likely order you another! Also, we're proud to co-present with KUSF, the return of the Dead C, performing live at the Great American Music Hall. Along with another aQ fave, Six Organs Of Admittance. It's not until October, but we figured we'd give you a good heads up, so you could plan accordingly. it's October 16th. At the Great American Music Hall. That's it, we gotta get to bed. Some of us have to drive to LA tomorrow. Enjoy the music. We'll have more for you in two short weeks.... --------------------------------------------------------------- And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. YOU!! And as always, please realize that we work really hard on the list, so if you find out about stuff through us, please try to buy your records from us. l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l Beloved Customers and Friends: Wow. List 300. Who woulda thunk? That's a lot of lists. We'll pat ourselves on the back later, when we're actually sending this out at 3am... All we can think now is, thanks to anyone and everyone who's been reading our lists (and buying from us) for all these years and years. And those who maybe just recently discovered us, thanks for tuning in too! Onward to list 400! We did have some ideas for something different to do for this 300th list milestone... like trying to write 300 reviews this time... thank god we didn't do that! Eventually we did decide on a little something special, you'll have to read elsewhere further down in this week's list to find out what it's gonna be... Our Record Of The Week this week is from an old reliable: the ever-wonderful Expo '70, whose latest 2nd 'real' cd (after many cd-rs) is a limited edition release on the Beta-Lactam label. For those of you, like, us, who looooove guitardrone spaceout krauty cosmic heaviness n' bliss, Expo '70's Black Ohms is of course a must-have. (And there's -another- Expo '70 related release just below, in the Highlights!) Those Highlights... Asbestoscape: One of the best (and only) metalgaze-meets-jungle albums of the year, can't believe it's just a self-released cd-r. And loads more, as usual. Including, again, a Kiss album revisited. And a couple cool new Omni titles (Biff Rose and Hugo Montenegro). And some neat now-on-vinyl releases, a bunch of limited and out of print cd-r's, and, well yeah, lot lots more. To wrap up, on the occasion of this, our 300th list, need it be said, we REALLY appreciate every dollar you spend here, instead of someplace else. Thank you, 'cause it's how we can keep doing what we love to do... and what you hopefully like us to be doing too. And please please help spread the word. Tell your friends about our shop, forward other music obsessives our list, we may not always be the fastest, but we might be the friendliest, and we're quite possibly the most passionate, at least we try to be. And we want to stick around as long as folks still want to buy records and cds, cuz we can't imagine a world without record stores. We have lots of cool stuff coming up, soon we'll have some aQ blogs, a podcast, several long overdue upgrades to the aQ website, the first in a series of super kick ass, super limited custom artist designed aQ shirts, and a bunch more. Some big surprises too!!! Stay tuned... Also, we're super excited to announce an upcoming instore, September 24th, NY's space rock, drone rock outronauts White Hills will be performing a special blissed out set, just for the instore, so be sure not to miss that, we'll send out an announcement closer to the date. And... don't forget about the big Halloween show, Corrupted, here for the first time in 11 years, all the way from Japan, along with Ludicra and Asunder. We have free tickets to give away. To be put in the running, just email [email protected] with the subject line CORRUPTED TIX. We'll draw names at random before the next list. Finally, one of our all time favorite records, a 4 disc set in fact, which we've sold nearly 1000 copies of here at aQ, and which has been sadly out of print for ages, is available once again. THE CONET PROJECT, a collection of recordings of mysterious numbers stations broadcasts, has not been reissued, instead, it's now available as a free download here: Okay, that's it, enjoy the sounds, and again, thanks for sticking with us for 300 Lists! Here's to 300 more!!! +O+O+O+O+O+O+O+O+O+(
Greetings! Back again with yet another list, and we modestly think, it's a doozy. First off, anyone who was bummed that our last list didn't have much in the way of the good ol' black metal on it (nothin' but one measly live Gorgoroth disc, believe it or not) will find we made up for that with a whole lotta evil, blackened treats this time 'round, including two Deathspell Omega documents, a new Striborg, THREE Dead Reptile Shrines and more. Also, we've got three killer Records of the Week this time. And the usual slew of limited cd-rs and cassettes and vinyls and stuff. Well, we'll save our breath for the highlights section immediately below... First, though, we'd better announce that we've got a cool event happenin' here at the store TOMORROW, local folks should come on down (well, you should come on down even if we weren't having an event) for the 3rd Annual KFJC Penny Pitch. What that means, one of our favorite radio stations, KFJC 98.7 is gonna be broadcasting all afternoon from the sidewalk outside of AQ!! It's the kickoff of their fundraising season. They did it here last year too and it was a blast. It's gonna be from 1pm to 6pm, with five KFJC DJs doing their shows, and tons of good food, giveaways and all sorts of other cool stuff. Should be super fun and festive. Also, today was the deadline for entries to the special, 'hidden' contest we had on list #300. We're giving away a $100 gift certificate, and the winner is... Mr. Barney Grubbs! Congratulations, Barney. And thanks to everyone else, who read list #300 closely enough to enter. We'll be doing other giveaways and stuff on a more regular basis, we'll keep you posted. And we have -another- set of contest winners to announce too: for the Corrupted ticket giveaway, our lucky winners are Eric Sculley, Daniel Taylor, Isaac Ontiveros! Congrats you three, see you at Slim's on Halloween, dooming out!! Didn't win? Well, we've got another ticket giveaway this list, for the Peter Hammill show at the Great American Music Hall on September 30th. Just email to [email protected] with "Peter Hammill Ticket Contest" in the subject line, we'll pick winners next Friday the 26th. We'll be giving away 2 pairs of tickets to see this rare Stateside solo show from the leader of one of our favorite '70s British prog rock bands, Van Der Graaf Generator, so good luck. Another show we should mention: AQ fave spacerockers White Hills from Brooklyn! Actually 2 shows. One a specially spaced-out, more mellow and ambient instore performance here at Aquarius on September 24th, that's next Wednesday, 6pm. The other, on Monday Sept. 29th, is at The Knockout bar on Mission Street. White Hills will be performing live n' loud, as part of the "Two Hours Of Krautrock II" video extravaganza being put on by WAR 93.7fm's Klaus To The Edge DJs - who are our Allan and former AQer Alison. We'll be screening a bunch of classic krautrock footage, high quality stuff from the likes of Lucifer's Friend, Can, Scorpions, Dies Irae, Seesselberg, Tangerine Dream, Kraan, Frumpy, and tons more. Please come check it out, it's gonna be rad! 10pm, $5, 3223 Mission St. One more show you need to save the date for: the FRISCO FREAKOUT! Saturday, October 11th. An all-day, all-night "psychedelic dance party" featuring a who's who of underground California psych rock: Earthless, Crystal Antlers, Wooden Shjips, the Bad Trips, Sleepy Sun, Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound, Greg Ashley, Ascended Master, Art Lessing and the Flower Vote. Wow! Ok, better get on with the list, we've been breaking our backs to get it done early tonight, 'cause Andee and Allan and Cameron and and bunch of our friends all have tickets to see the big CARCASS reunion show this evening!!! Heck probably every metalhead in San Francisco will be there. We sure don't want to miss it. The best death metal / grind / gore band EVER! And none of us had ever gotten a chance to see 'em before, didn't think we ever would. We are CHUFFED. Tell you all about it next time. So, those three Records Of The Week, they are... Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffalo: Mind blowing reissue of this '70 Japanese psychedelic artifact. Intense African drumming meets jazz meets acid rock proto metal prog. Possibly the reissue of the year! And the many Highlights this list... Acid Mothers Temple: Brand new studio album from this, the latest incarnation of the ever shifting Japanese rock collective. Plus a whole lot more, including an amazing and ridiculously comprehensive death metal book, the new issue of The Wire, the new Metallica (which we've rocked out to more than we'd like to admit), new David Grubbs, a John Darnielle novel about Black Sabbath's Master Of Reality, another fantastic Dr. Boogie collection, a new, poppy Negativland, a Ryoji Ikeda reissue, as well as the first review on the aQ list from Andee's Mom, hopefully not the last, and more more more... Plus as we mentioned before, we have some blog action happening. One of them is up and running. Hopefully it will be a good place to check between lists for new arrivals, super limited stuff that wouldn't normally make it to the list, as well as other cool aQ stuff. Check it out here: And if we can get it together, we might even get a second blog up and running, one that's less business, and more fun and weird, with random stuff, show reviews, ramblings, or whatever, then again, who knows, maybe we'll just cram the two together. But for now check the link above every few days, and you're bound to discover plenty of new and exciting music and stuff... Okay, that should be it. Hopefully see you tomorrow at the KFJC Penny Pitch, or next week at the White Hills instore, or maybe.... ...tonight at CARCASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, we gotta run, thanks as always, and as always, we hope you dig all these amazing new sounds...
And as always, thanks for reading the list, passing it on to all your friends who love weird music, shopping at our store, turning -us- on to all sort of great stuff, and helping us spread the word and get all this great music to the people who love it. YOU!! And as always, please realize that we work really hard on the list, so if you find out about stuff through us, please try to buy your records from us. So thanks. Plus it makes ordering almost effortless 'cause a single mouse click will pop an item directly into your shopping cart!
