Besides, the auction didn't specify that you had to have a certain amount of feedback. Therefore they couldn't deny him it.

According to what I've seen and read, the guy didn't actually get it. There's an article linked in the RYM thread link I posted.

I saw it. I'm not sure what Globe & Mail is, though. I haven't had a chance to verify the site's validity yet.

That's the only source that says that that I've turned up yet at least. If you can find me another I'll be more inclined to believe it.

Yeah, who knows for sure.
Anyways, I still think it's ridiculous that anyone would want to spend all that money on it. I could undertstand it being sold to thr R'nR hall of fame or something, though. I thought I saw another on RYM, I could be wrong though... Edited by Zac M - December 12 2006 at 02:29 |

Hey, I think it's a neat piece of history. And who knows, perhaps the guy will be able to strike up a deal with Columbia or someone to get the thing officially released. Then it'd be worth his investment, I think.

Very true
I wasn't expecting it to go that high; I thought maybe 100K at most. Even if it was my favorite artist and I had the cash, I still don't think I could ever make myself pay that much, though. |

Hell, I would (hypothetically since I don't have two cents to rub together) go that high if say a previously unheard of cut of Piper at the Gates of Dawn or some other Floyd artifact surfaced. I'm that fanatical about my Floyd.

Well, I have the early demo tapes of The Enid (my current favorite), so I'm happy. The sound quality is crap though, but I'm not complaining. The record sleeve is actually autographed by Godfrey himself, and it's coloured vinyl, pretty cool. I have some other rarities by them, as well. No bootlegs, though, I can't seem to find 'em.

The quote provided by Hill in that article shows up NOWHERE else online. The quote was that the bid "has proved to be bogus."
Also that article claims that Hill isn't much of a fan of VU... which is in contrast to the story on the auction itself that said that Hill and his friend had heard many VU outtakes between the two of them (suggesting in my mind at least that they are both big fans). As it stands right now I think the only thing that "has proved to be bogus" is that article. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my hat. |

Globe & Mail is Toronto's (and English Canada's) most trustworthy newspaper and a reliable/serious source of info.
But paying so much for an acetate is ridiculous, no matter what the group or artist is. Acetates are demos (softer wax discs) that are meant to be played max 20 times before they degraded from stylus wear. In general the production was not yet finished and generally was used for internal use inside labels and maybe as demos to DJ's.
So outside the rarity, you are limited to the number of plays if the disc is not worn out already. Edited by Sean Trane - December 12 2006 at 06:42 |

Which is why on the auction page they recommended using a laser-player to read the acetate.

Sure but what garantee do you have the disc has not been played 40 times already and is therefore unusable.
