I don't see any symphonic elements here...
 
Most of these bands are great... I'm particularly fond of Symphony X... but there's no symphonic-prog to be found here.... Like most metal, it's mostly based on riffs, short themes, rhythm and virtuosity (just speed sometimes)... there's no "symphonic" treatment of themes a la true symphonic-prog (though that "symphonic" part we already discussed in a topic I started a while ago)
 
So they are great, but, at least those, nopt sympho.

I really like Savatage thoug they contain many power metal elements and I don't really know if they fit in this debate. I'm not too fond of bands with operatic female vocals like Nightwish or Therion.

Virgin Black is quite an interesting symphonic prog-metal band (expect to see them on the archives sometime soon, an ex-PMT member is working on their addition).
 
I often enjoy Symphonic Progressive Metal unless it is too cheesy. I think "Symphonic Progressive Metal" refers to any kind of Prog Metal, that is closer to 70's progressive rock and utilises orchestration and is more keyboard based. In that way, I think Arcturus's The Sham Mirrors can be called to be partly a Symphonic Prog Metal band, although, I've noticed the genre is more often associated with Traditional and Power bands, is it not? Any discussion is appreciated.

There's a lot in this genre, just think of Therion. A good one is Koyaanisqatsy from Germany. Their first CD can be downloaded for free:

Aren't we confusing prog-metal with symphony orchestras or orchestral sounds with true SYMPHONIC-metal with quasi-symphonic structures ?

V by Symphony X has some quite symphonic elements and it is a highly enjoyable album for my ears.

I like that bands, specially Symphony X, which I love. Anyway, I don't think they're Symphonic Prog Metal, they're POWER Prog Metal since there are a lot of Power Metal influences on their music, specially on the first Symphony X's albums.
The only pieces (from that bands) that can be considered 'Symphonic' are SX's epics "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy", "The Oddysey" and "Through The Looking Glass", being the most 'Symphonic' ones, IMO.

The Divine Wings Of Tragedy and The Odyssey are the only albums of Symphony X that i like, that explains why i think they are playing Symphonic Progressive Metal.

BTW: Is the word "progressive" or "Prog" really required (and/or needed) in these labels??? 
 
Power-Prog-Metal sounds as descriptive as pop-prog to me...

"V" is the only album from the band I haven't heard. Embarrassed And I know some people say it's their best, maybe it will come for Christmas.

When someone puts the words "metal" and "symphonic" together I think of The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus. Generally this band is "black metal" or just "prog-metal", but The Sham Mirrors in particular sounds like quite the little ELP-influenced work. Just listen to those key-solo inserts.

I also think if you want to get technical, almost all progmetal bands are not symphonic, though there are exceptions. It's a very small "subgenre" or "tag" to use.

The problem with this discussion is that the word "Symphonic" has two different meanings:

1. Keyboard-oriented, lush, artistic, occasional references to classical music
2. Orchestral, dominated by classical music influences

It's difficult to keep them apart - on my website I tried to use "Symphonic" for the first and "Orchestral" for the second, but it's not easy to always keep it in mind. The best solution would be to dump them and use the attributes that they're composed of instead.

Kamelot's The Black Halo is quite symphonic.
....
Guitarist Tony McAlpine's side project with drummer Virgil Donati (cheesy band called Ring of Fire) has some orchestral (symphonic????) feel in it, but definitely far from being prog metal.
I have to agree with Ivan about Virgin Black being symphonic. Though I'm having second thoughts on wether they're prog or not. I still like VB anyways.
