The problem with creating polls is that people just want to vote for the songs that they know and they don't want to take the time to listen to the songs that they don't.  This poll will take an hour out of your life that you probably don't have to give.  I've chosen 5 songs that each last 12 minutes in length.  You have one hour to listen to them all and tell me which one is your favorite.  Some of you may have an advantage and already know a song or two so maybe you will get done a bit quicker.  Wink

I won't vote yet as I have not taken the time to hear the others, but Eggshell Man is my favourite track off the album that topped my contribution to the 2013 AotY list.

Yes, that's it exactly! I nearly always vote for the songs or albums I already know, instead of taking the time to listen to all of the unfamiliar songs or albums in the poll. Wink

Give it a shot.  The songs are there.  Give 'em a listen.  You either waste an hour of your life or find yourself emptying your wallet to buy new albums that you must have.

I usually try to listen to ones I don't know and often will favour that which is new to me. I have found it odd sometimes that so many even with but two options will automatically go with the one they know rather than even trying to check out the other choice. I like research and finding new to me things more than many. people have different priorities. I would not vote in such a poll if I weren't willing to try the other, but that's me and we all have our differences. When at PA, I always keep a youtube tab open. I have discovered so much great music that way over the years. When I make my own topics too, I always try to listen to everything I don't know that others post in them (or at least in part if really long -- I am sometimes put off by topics by posters who don't seem interested in what the respondees write, especially when they ask for recommendations and then don't respond back). Sometimes I scrub through tracks to get a feel for if I might enjoy them (play bits and pieces of it) and then if it at all appeals, then I play the whole thing. If there are only a few choices, I used to always try to comment on each of them. Others at PA are often listening to their own music when online, but I rarely do that unless I'm making a topic or writing something about music that I already love.

One issue is that we get so many topics and polls a day (I like to read through threads, and that also takes time) that it can be hard to really delve into all of them. There is only so much time in a day, and time is precious. Less active topics might lead to better and deeper discussion, and having fewer active polls (especially outside of the usual choices) might lead to more people wanting to check out the music. There's commonly so much going on here every day that it can get overwhelming, especially for a windbag like me.

Paul, I know you like to share music in your topics, and if you're like me, you would hope that others would listen and discover music through that. That is why I post music embeds -- hoping that someone will find something to appreciate, maybe discuss it a bit, and I have found a lot of great music by people posting other music in my own topics as well as by checking out other people's topics.

That said, I won't commit an hour to this now (and if I don't seem to like a track I might not listen to the whole thing). I still have to given another listen to those in the latest interactive poll. From a little listen to each these are generally outside my comfort zone usual music preferences, but I do like to challenge myself. The Eggshell Man and Izvir ones are appealing to me particularly now.

By the way, I think the interactive polls have shown that there are quite a few here who are willing to listen to music posted by others and actually post their thoughts on the music, which is a favourite part for me (well, I like to read what others think more than what I think as I'm terrible when it comes to describing music). Yes, partially it's because they want others to listen to their music, but it becomes a wonderful communal exercise), and I hope this becomes common across topics. Since being here I have hoped that we could get into more topics where we listen to each other's music, discover music, and comment on it. It can be very ear-opening and for me is a wonderful sociable activity. I don't have people to share my music interests with (or many other passions) outside of PA, if I did then doing so at PA would likely mean less to me.

Okay I had a chance to give a good listen to each. Once I opened up my ears the music did open up to me. I could go different ways, but I will vote for izvir's šel je popotnik skozi atomski vek.

I like this idea!

Yes, I will give them a listen, but give me a day or two to digest them.

Thanks!

Unfamiliar with all of the music, although I know a few of the bands. One hour spent catching up, and for me Eggshell Man is the clear winner.

All qualify for a "Finest Hour"-compilation, but Days between Stations remains the winner for me.

I decided to vote for Eggshell Man also.  But I enjoy all of these songs.  The Izvir song was a new one for me.

Great series of polls by you and I have started to listen to these now... but I can probably process one of these per week and they come on faster than daily basis... Shocked

I had some time on my hands this weekend and I was feeling my version of "creative".  Too bad I'm not a musician and couldn't harness that creativity into creating some music.  I have a few more themed ideas percolating but I will save them to release over the next few weeks.

Didn't give an hour or listen all the way through. But the one that stood out for me was Izvir.

Good luck with your polls.

This is going to take me longer than I thought. Once it gets going, I quite like much of Eggshell Man. It reminds me a bit of "Gharibi Hal Denyi" by Nawal El Zoghbi. If you haven't seen that video, it was very popular in parts of the middle east.

song link

The part that reminds me of it is the notes in the riff in Nawal El Zoghbi's tune at around 2:05. It is quite a visually striking video.

I'm not big on songs that go ... chord ... next measure ... chord ... next measure ... chord. The introduction of Eggshell Man is a bit like that, and the vocals in that part sound like "the new style" which I'm NOT a big fan of. But, once it gets its legs, it is well worth a continued listen and I very much warmed up to it. Some of the percussion and guitar work is superb, and I will include it on my playlist.

IQ - Until the End - Excellent beginning (love the chord progression there) and middle sections. Production is great; it seems like the sound is quite heavily processed, but this lends itself to a good mix. Some wonderful and very fluid solos. The denouement is a bit too much like the new sound, and it drives me bananas when singers vocalize directly on the same beat and with the same melody as the instruments. But, aside from that, very good song, nonetheless.

Frequency Drift - reminds me of another band, Limbo Cafe. If you can find the album "I Like My Pie With Cream," you'd probably dig them, too, especially the song "In the Next World". Regarding the song from Frequency Drift, the opening percussion is very good. The singer has a nice vocal style, and the bass gets cooking, which can be rare these days.

Limbo Cafe Album

Izvir - I dig the groove of the percussion/bass. I dig the vocal harmonies. I dig the keyboard variations off that groove. With this style, there is quite a bit of repetition. But, hey! When you have a good groove, you have a good groove. Also, the old style tremolo (an amp feature, not picking style) is neat.

Flying Colors - I like the verse very much. The jumpy bass part is groovy.
The icy guitar solos are ear-splittingly great. The keyboard solo sound jumps almost from 70s Kansas style to 70s Boston style. All fine. What I don't like about the song is the new-style chorus (song section), which is quite "wall of sound". And, there are some chords in one part that sound like mid-90s Rush, which seem a bit out of place. Some of the transitions in the arrangement are good, but some are a bit abrupt. Overall, a very good song.

Thank you for posting them! Now I have to decide.

OK, I gave you my hour, that must be enough for this week. Wink
Very nice selection. I only knew the IQ one, which is excellent. It is however beaten to second place by the phantastic Eggshell piece, which is a cool discovery. I've got to buy this.
Frequency Drift didn't make such a lasting impression on me, may need further listens. The izvir one is musically mostly very good but I don't like some of the singing. Flying Colors has some really excellent parts but they are put together in an inconsistent way according to my intuition.

Thank you for your insights.  It is nice to see other perspectives of songs.  It helps me to learn more about the songs.  Not being a musician I don't have an ear for the nuances that many of you have.  Or maybe it is what Lewian called intuition.

Days Between Stations, never heard of them and it is a very pleasant and welcome surprise - Eggshell Man got my vote.

IQ, I love this band, but they are turning in circles, imo. It is more of the same IQ...
Izvir, long time no see, but I always preferred Omega...
Frequency Drift and Flying Colours represent for me what I don't like in many modern prog bands: lack of originality, we've heard all this before (sorry to be harsh)...
