Following on the controversial 9/11 thread, I was curious to see whether people believed (i) that the 9/11 attacks were planned and carried out solely by bin Laden et al, and that Bush et al did not have any knowledge of the plans, (ii) the "LIHOP" theory ("let it happen on purpose"), which posits that Bush et al knew of the planned attacks, but through "willful negligence" did nothing to stop them, or (iii) the "MIHOP" theory ("made it happen on purpose"), which posits that Bush et al were complicit in the planning and carrying out of the attacks.

Discussion is invited, though given the existence of the 9/11 thread, I will understand if you want to vote without discussion.

Peace.

To Tony: Feel anybody better? (I sure as hell don't)

Anyway:

I cannot believe that I am, but I have to agree with Tony here, I want to say that Bush made it all happen, but there is still a lot of evidence to add up before I make a conclusion. In a word, Other.

Bush 'allowed' it to happen through ignoring Clintons anti-terrorism programs, but he really can't be blamed, it was incompetence not malice.

I usually dont go with gut instinct on this, but ill say that Bush allowed it to happen. Even if there is no proof of it that I find satisfactory. All of it doesnt add up, and i think those attacks would have been prevented easily enough. I mean those planes were flying very low and VERY off course. It would have been noticed.

I am still torn between the negligence (this would also involve the Clinton administration since this happened only nine months after the start of Bush term) and the complicity/conspiracy.

For my US friends , I wish/hope not for the conspiracy bit (actually if this had happened under Democrat reign I would not even doubt for the negligence option) but I cannot wipe it away from my mind. I never trusted to Republicans (this started with Nixon and the almost-coup with the Reagan shooting from this general) and in another thread thrown in by Maani (JFK murder) , I also suspect the Republicans to be behind it , for Kennedy was a bit too popular and they feared him and his brother (and maybe the Reps had also a bit to do in the Ted/Chappaquidick bit).

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I don't like Bush, but I struggle with the theory of complicity.  Although, I am sure there are/were people in his administration who were happy that it happened.

some of what michael moore has to say in Fahrenheit 911 is very interesting - like why the bin laden family members were allowed to leave the country when no one else was.  I doubt Bush was involved, but I bet some others were aware of what was happening.

You THINK so.

It might help to have proof or a reason before you hate someone and say that they suck.

Have you heard of a word called RESPECT were you come from?

Fair enough though, I RESPECT your opinion.......you may even have a good reason to not like Mr. Bush anyway

Whether it's just semantics, I don't quite think Bush "let" 9/11 happen, but I think he could have been more proactive with terroistsm/terrorist groups etc. etc.

I think his negligence towards terrorism in general allowed such a thing to happen. But it's not like it's all his fault.

 Semantics.....
