Topic: Moderator, rules, penalties Posted: April 19 2004 at 08:22 |
Dear Max
I'm posting this as I know these thoughts are shared by many others on the site - this is not just me having a rant.
Much as I hate to suggest this, I feel there should be some kind of code of conduct/moderator; we all like the cut and thrust of debate, but in recent weeks, there have been threads which have descended into personal abuse and borderline racism/xenophobia.
There's too much of this in the real world without it infecting a virtual community such as this.
Given the above, therefore, I'd suggest that a moderator be appointed to keep an eye out for such posts, delete them & warn the offender - if such posts persist from the same member, thought be given to revoking membership.
I've been the member of too many forums which have descended into these behaviour patterns; this is without doubt the forum I visit, and enjoy the most - I'd hate to see it go the same way.

Yes, good idea...
BUT I also have to say that this is maybe the most friendly Forum I ever saw. The level of courtesy is very high, I appreciate that and that's why I love this Forum, you can discuss on a really high level without members insulting each other...what I wanted to say is that there are Forums that are more in need of a moderator or rules...
but in general this is a good idea...

It must be working. Someone changed "w**ker Mustaine" to "w**ker Mustaine" in the Megadeath/Metallica thread.
Good job, Guys.

GREAT sentiment guys -- you know that I concur with all you have said, BUT, we already have an active moderator: the level-headed and calming Maani. As he has a "real" job and demands on his time elsewhere (like most of us), offensive posts/threads may sit there for a while, but he soon gets to them. Something you can do to help is to send Maani a Private Message (that's what I do) telling him how you feel about an offensive post. You can also do as you have done, and let the offending poster know that their post has "crossed the line." (Good job, Danbo & Jim, in particular.)
Another tactic is to not respond to the posts of people who are consistently insulting or confrontational -- I do so with one or two people here (I think many of you do as well) and the offender -- if they want someone to "talk" or "listen" to them, will usually tone it down.
We all (me too!) cross the line sometimes, and it is especially easy and tempting to do so when "hiding" behind a Net nickname, and "talking" to strangers you likely will never meet. But: if you wouldn't say it in "real" life, why say it here? The "world" is "listening!" What kind of world do you want?
Together, we can help keep this site a great and fun place to visit!

All:
First, thank you, Peter, for your support. I don't know how "level-headed" or "calming" I am ( ), but if so, that's a good thing.
Although I do have a "job," I will be monitoring as many of the threads as I can to see how things are going. Peter is correct that sending me a private message is helpful, since it is obviously impossible for one single person to monitor every thread all the time. Peter is also correct that the best tactic is to ignore inappropriate posts: don't encourage inappropriate threads by posting responses; this way, you give the post-er nothing to respond to. And although you are free to tell the post-er that they have "crossed the line," this may only incite further inappropriate posts by them. I have always said that "if you ignore them, they will go away." Most of the time, it works.
Finally, Dude, you are not by any means the only "regular" here who has "pushed the boundaries" at one time or another. My only "concern" is that each person realize when they have done so, and "correct" it if necessary. As hard as it may be to live up to, "humility" is a powerful force for keeping sites and forums like this from degenerating into chaos and name-calling.
My "private message" line is always open.
Peace.

You're all great! Maybe there are some weird, rude people who want to destroy our comunity, but they'll never succeed! Jim, vibrationbaby, lucas, maani, Peter, dude, danbo, Max > all of the 'core members', you are HEROES!
ok, that's enough for now ... good idea Jim!

Yes.
And the meek shall inherit the Earth.
All roads lead to Rome
And a million other platitudes.
If people dont get fired up by their love of music, life etc then it will be a poorer place to be.If one believes that most posts are made in the heat of the moment (even if you are reading them hours/days later) then it is less easy to take offence.A friend of mine once said that there was no passion in prog music, I am beginning to believe he was on to something.

I am tring to be diplomatic (me?) but am suggesting that too many on the forum are over-sensitive.I have always believed that it is easier to think good of someone (ie presume they are joking or being ironic) than automatically take offence and reach for the cudgels.
Whilst I understand that there can be a considerable language and cultural barrier between forum members it always amazes me that this disappears where for example Frank Zappa is concerned or Monty Python. No one on this forum seems to have any trouble "getting" them.
All this "peace" and " " is unecessary. I do not take offence. Even when I fly off the handle about guns I am really reacting to the "ideas" behind the opinion, not the person themselves.
I spend half my time worrying about giving offence, I even PM'd Max about it (without a reply I might add) when it is you lot that over-react.
Tuxon-if you had upset me, believe me when I say you would know about it. You are a good bloke.Enough said.

You cant really respond to a suggestion that was made to me, which I didnt agree with, by someone you dont know and who has no interest in Prog Rock.
What he was intimating was that people who like our sort of music are geekswho prefer to hide out in our bedrooms, thinking about dungeons and dragons, or Star Trek and Star wars, rather than dealing with people/events in the real world. The nearest example I can give you is a cross between"Martin" & "Comicbookstore Guy" in The Simpsons. Mind you he doesnt know I shagged his girlfriend, in his bed, during his 21st birthday party. So who's the wuss now Carter??????
