Doctor Who is back this weekend but seems that the BBC is going to put it on semi permanent hiatus after this latest series airs. It's been dogged with falling ratings amid accuations of being too preachy and pandering to 'woke' culture (a trend that is also killing Marvel it seems). Apparently Ncuti Gatwa is reluctant to do any more for fear that it could damage his future career prospects and has moved to America to pursue film roles. Very sad for a show that was the very cutting edge of sci-fi and could boost serious great actors such as Christopher Eccelstone, Matt Smith and David Tennant in it's main role. I like the latest doctor although it's always in danger of being too 'camp' I'm afraid to say. Will probably watch it anyway.

Thanks for the list Greg. Midnight Mass and The Haunting Of Hill House were great, certainly well up there for the best 'one offs' ever. The scene with the sisters when they get out of the car (HOHH) is incredibly emotional. Some very fine acting going on that should be the norm for horror but often isn't. I also loved the Korean series Kingdom and other 'one offs' Brand New Cherry Flavour and Katla. I tried the Dark but couldn't follow all the back and forth between younger and older versions of characters. Having a similar problem with Yellowjackets at the moment although that is still quite 'fun' psycho women gone rogue in the wild type stuff.

Finished the Van der Valk reboot, a very enjoyable crime procedural shot in beautiful Amsterdam with Marc Warren, Maimie McCoy, Darrell D'Silva, and Emma Fielding leading a close-knit group of detectives.
Starting The Blacklist, looking forward to it. |

^ Well, I love the original Channel 4 runs and started with those before it went to Netflix. Every series/season has at least one episode I really love. I prefer the Channel 4 series/seasons (plus White Christmas) to the latest seasons of Black Mirror on Netflix. "White Bear' from when it was on Chanel 4 is a particular fave of mine, "Shut Up and Dance" of the Netflix run is certainly well up there. And I do love USS Callister... But then I thought the debut with the PM and the sow was not only audacious but extremely good, which many don't, and that's what got me hooked on watching Black Mirror as I did watch it in order of episode. I also love Bandersnatch (the interactive Black Mirror movie) which I have seen many criticise.
My list got too long, I tried for what are all considered to be Netflix originals. I got into mnay other things on Netflix, such as the anime Death Note which is not a Netflix produced series. Dark is a particular favourite of mine. I listed the languages... With Midnight Mass I caught some of the filming. The order is not really fixed at all, but I knew Dark would be at the top. Dark (German) Black Mirror (English) Midnight Mass (English) Squid Game (Korean) Stranger Things (English) Kingdom (Korean) Katla (Icelandic) 1899 (various) The Haunting of Hill House (English) the Haunting of Bly Manor (English) Ad Vitam (French) The Fall of the House of Usher (English) Money Heist (Spanish) The Rain (Danish) Kaos (English) Alice in Borderland (Japanese) Kleo (German) The Forest (French) Three Body Problem (English mostly) 1983 (Polish) The Chestnut Man (Danish) Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes (Norwegian) Omniscieent (Portuguese) Copenhagen Cowboy (Danish) Ratched (English) The End of the F***ing World (English) Crazyhead (English) The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (English) All the Light we Cannot See (maybe not a Netflix original) Brand New Cherry Flavour (English) Deadwind (Finnish) Lunatics (English) Cunk on Earth (English) The Midnight Club (English) Osmosois (French) On Children (Mandarin) The Girl in the Mirror (Spanish) Woman of the Dead (German) The Sandman (English) The 8 Show (Korean) And Wild Wild Country is terrific documentary series and love the reality game series Squid Game: The Challenge Anyway, Dark is brilliant, been surprised how many people I have spoken to and watch Netflix don't know it. Maybe for some because it's German. I love watching with subtitles. Edited by Logan - Yesterday at 01:06 |

Netflix used to be so good that at one point I had about 40 shows on the go. I needed to take a day off work just to try and catch up. Can I do a top ten Netflix of all time? I'll give a it a go but I've not researched it at all and mostly it's just shows off the top of my head that I enjoyed a lot (hopefully others will post lists as well).
1) Breaking Bad (yep not a very original choice but hey ho) 2) Stranger Things (ditto!) 3) Ozark (intersting crime drama that might be a bit underrated) 4) Schitts Creek (very warm and well developed comedy show) 5) Daredevil (loved this back when Netflix had the rights to Marvel adaptions, the other spin offs were also good) 6) Final Space (enjoyed this animated sci fi show, very original clever writing and excellent visuals) 7) The Expanse (started on Netflix but then later picked up by Amazon after they decided it was presumably too expensive to make) 8) Travellers (another great sci fi show that was canned by Netflix, too much of a patten on this front it seems) 9) Black Mirror (started on Channel 4 in the UK but Netflix picked it up and made it better for sure) X) The Last Kingdon (Viking drama that ran 5 seasons and got better and better) |

^ I don't have a VPN, but I subscribe to Netflix, Prime, Crave (which is particularly good for HBO content). I
I just finished Kleo season/series two last night (on Netflix). A German show that I have enjoyed very much. The second series felt a bit less plot coherent, this was more focused on certain aspects of the characters, but it was fun and I find the show beautiful to look at. I know this is about what you finished watching and at around the same time I made a topic on what you are mot anticipating, but I'll just mention it here before I finally do the things I need to (working from home as I do is both a blessing and a curse as I a great procrastinator). I'm really looking forward to season/series seven of Black Mirror which comes out tomorrow. I have not been this excited for Black Mirror for some years. * note the use of epic music in the trailer implying epicness* ![]() |

Hi,
I'm hoping that in a couple of months I can get one of those VPN connections so I can watch some of these things ... I haven't had a TV for 10 years, and generally I don't miss it, but seeing all the things said here, makes me think I need to watch some more ... film is getting really hard to come by ... there is no really good site for foreign films, and Amazon kinda thinks that "foreign" means Anime and some more Samurai swords! The sadder (is there such a word?) part of it is that there isn't a lot of Visconti, Bertolucci, Fellini, Bergman, Truffaut ... and so many others to watch and then the worst part of Amazon ... the same film in 27 categories, and of course, it is one of theirs! The worst database separation ever created, obviously by folks that don't do movies at all!

The Bondsman
Kevin Bacon's character dies and then is brought back to life by the devil to hunt down demons that have escaped hell. I guess another graphic novel adaption but this seems promising and Bacon is not hamming it up as much I would expect. Only the first episode though!

In a rotation of a few series currently.
Sea Patrol (beginning season 3) - Australian based show that follows the crew of a patrol boat on the northern sea border of Australia. I've become caught up in the characters of the crew. Route 66 (at the end of season 2) - Old TV show from the early 60's starring Martin Milner before his role in the Adam 12 series. Couple of drifters in a Corvette that travel along the old route 66 in the US. For the time, it brings up some tough issues on occasion which I would not have thought would have made it to the screen back then. I was only 2 or 3 when this series originally aired. I am enjoying it. Andromeda (season 2) - Sci Fi series from the Roddenberry universe of sci fi shows, about a star ship captain who got frozen in time in a black hole that was recovered a few hundred years later. Just a mindless guilty pleasure when I do not want to think about anything.

I seem to be watching a lot of gangster and crime dramas at the moment
Virdee 6 episodes Ultra violent psycho on the loose has to be stopped. All shot on location in one of the UK's biggest cities (yes honestly!) Bradford. 8/10 Gangs of London Season 3 First 2 seasons are easily 8-9 stars. This starts off just as stong. Dope Thief Season 1 Mentioned on a previous post and this is well worth a look. Another feather in the cap for Apple TV+ Mobland Season 1 Only 2 episodes so far but Tom Hardy just being in it is a big deal. This City Is Ours Season 1 Liverpool based and very heavy on the scouse accents so subtitles can be useful! Through 4 episodes of the 8 so far, this is top notch. Advise that you avoid any interviews (even links) as they are spoliers. I wish the actors were more responsible about these things when a new show is put out. I get the enthusiasm but don't ruin it!

Wolf Hall season 2 tonight on PBS with Mark Rylance & Damian Lewis. Last week's debut was as good as always, looking forward to this season.

Death in Paradise Season 14 (!)
The exclamation mark just for how many seasons there have been already. I enjoyed the dynamic of this season with the excellent actor Don Gilet adding some much needed grit to the frothy end of week 'switch off brain' entertainment. 8/10

It did feel to me that Season 4 stepped out of what was so good about Fargo although there is no reason to not watch it. Season 5 was a return to form with Jon Hamm playing the sort of arrogant 'Trump like' character that is very hissable for sure

I finished Fargo season five, an anthology series with each season telling a different story, with Juno Temple, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joe "Steve the Hair Harrington" Keery and Dave Foley of Kids in the Hall. I have Crave in Canada and quite recently that streaming service got the rights to Fargo. I had already watched and loved the first three seasons, with the first season remaining my favourite (still have the fourth to see completely) and very much enjoyed this. I did npot find it as powerful as, say, the first, partially because I might feel I know better a little better what kind of things to expect, but also because it did not have the same level of spiralling inevitably to something bad happening. Fargo has always involved making some bad and/or questionable decisions, but this one demonstrates that ultimately the choice is up to you and you can change your path, your destiny.
It's more empowering in that way. A big focus of the season is domestic abuse and trying to make a new life. I really enjoyed it, as someone who was into Kids in the Hall when it came out (and watched some of the revival series), it was a pleasure to see Dave Foley and Jon Hamm's nipple rings not as much. I read an "audience" review of it at rotten tomatoes that I hated which said "Stick to the first 3 seasons. Don't even attempt to watch 4." I commonly like it when people considerately express their thoughts, but I also commonly dislike it when they tell me how to think and/or what to do. I'm glad I did not follow that reviewer's directive and made my own choices. |

Just read that Adolescence is the first streaming only show to top the weekly ratings chart in the UK since they started counting these things back in 2021. That's impressive given that we have one of the most popular TV shows The Apprentice on at the moment and it also beat Death In Paradise which has also got good recently with the introduction of actor Don Gillet into the main role.
Just watched a 3 episode thing on Amazon called Fear that stars Martin Compston from Line Of Duty. It's very interesting stuff and asks the question ''How far should you go to protect your family?''. This is normally the thing of Jason Statham movies but here it's given a more thoughtful treatment. Also features support from the great actor James Cosmo but just be aware it's filmed in Glasgow so you'll need the subtitles on

^ Yes, season 2 of Beacon 23 was a real chore - a shame really as the first season showed promise.
I'm 4 episodes into season 2 of the brilliant Severance (I'll always wait for a show to be fully released before starting). I absolutely love shows like this - weird, mysterious and gripping. The acting is sublime, notably John Torturro. Just superb TV.

Beacon 23 Season 2
I managed to drag myself through this in the end with the hope it would improve (It didn't). Problem is the story lines (or lack of them) and that old chestnut ''The Alien Artifact'' which was done way better in The Expanse. Also a real head scratcher, why was young Astor speaking in an American accent but grown up Astor (played by Leana Heady) with a strong Yorkshire dialect and no trace of an American accent?! 5/10
