Severance Season 2
Ends with a great feature length episode. Sagged a tiny bit in the middle but mostly A+ (overall 9/10). Season 3 is also now offically green lit to go into production.

^ I'm aware of the series although I don't have Netflix anymore, getting some buzz in the media so to speak. Stephen Graham is one of the best British actors around.

Just finished Apple TV's Prime Target. Not sure how much I enjoyed it and largely it was an unconvincing drama about weird mathematical equations, cyber security and the usual ridiculous computer hackery that only exists in TV and film land. Not enough tension but good location filming in the UK and The Middle East made it at least partly enjoyable plus an appearance from legendary actor Steven Rea helped it along. Overall 7/10 for those with far too much time on their hands (me apparently!)

Also just watched the first 2 episodes of Dope Thief (the first one directed by Ridley Scott). This is totally addictive from the off and features Brazilian actor Wagner Moura in perhaps his first decent role since playing Pablo Escobar in the hit Netflix drama Narcos.

I've just watched the first 2 episodes of Adolescence. It's impressive that each episode is shot in one take. But even more impressive when I read this:

So how did they film in one take? Well Netflix has just shared a bunch of details. Posting on X (formerly known as Twitter) on 15 March, the streamer revealed they planned to film each episode at least 10 times, with one take being shot in the morning and the next in the afternoon. This process was to happen over five days, but inevitably not everything always goes to plan and there were some episodes where they ended up abandoning takes and doing more than the planned 10.

They then shared which take ended up as the final episode we saw on Netflix:

Episode 1 - Take 2 - was shot on shoot day 1 of 5
Episode 2 - Take 13 - was shot on shoot day 5 of 5
Episode 3 - Take 11 - was shot on shoot day 5 of 5
Episode 4 - Take 16 - was shot on shoot day 5 of 5

Netflix then went onto reveal how the cast prepared for each episode, explaining: "In preparation for the shoot, segments of the script were rehearsed and a little bit more added each day – starting with five minutes on the first day and then adding further material as they went through, so by the end of the week they would be doing full run-throughs."

If the cast forgot or messed up a line they would either carry on with the mistake or if it was too big to ignore they would then reset and abandon the take.

During their rehearsals the cast and crew would work out how to move around each other, with Netflix adding: "Sometimes it was necessary for some of the crew to remain in shot, in these instances they were dressed in costume so that they could blend into the show to serve as extras in the shot."

As for that drone shot at the end of episode two? Well turns out they attached the camera to a drone as they were following Jade (Fatima Bojang) out of the school and the camera flew 0.3 miles to where Eddie (Stephen Graham) was placing the flowers and caught by a separate camera crew who "smoothly catch the camera and transition into a close shot of Stephen Graham."

I did see some the filming shots on the One Show and the camera guys were amazing the way they moved the equipment around, passing cameras onto jigs and to other cameramen, even drones.  A very good TV drama too.

Severance

Orwellian future-shock about a corporation that requires employees to split their conscious memories between their work-life and their personal life.   An ex-employee who has overridden his bifurcation implant begins to approach department head Mark (Adam Scott) in his outside life, causing a schism in Mark that grows more prevalent.   When a defiant employee (Britt Lower) decides she doesn't like the arrangement and Mark starts to question the life they've chosen, things go badly.   Beautifully produced, tense, disturbing, Severance is a sophisticated drama with plenty of Phillip K. Dick on hand.

Patience Season 1 6 episodes
Another crime drama but this one centering on the problem solving skills of autistic police archivist Patience Evans. She helps detective Bea Metcalf not only to solve cases but provides insights into her own challenges with her special needs son. Incredibly well acted by Ella Maisy Purvis (herself autistic) as Patience and Laura Fraser as Bea, this is a great buddy cop series with a twist. 9/10

The One That Got Away 6 episodes
A BBC Wales crime drama (so called ''Cymru Noir'') starring stalwat Welsh actor Richard Harrington (Hinterland) and Elen Rhys (The Mallorca Files). Some very nice writing and acting. Highly enjoyable. 8/10

Daredevil is back! Enjoyed the first 2 episodes, they get up to speed pretty quickly to a point that is a year after the original Netflix series left the story. Seems to be another variation on the plot used in Billions. Fisk is back and trying to 'do a Donald Trump' and must be stopped. That's fine for me!

Day of the Jackal  -  season 1

Pretty darn thrilling thriller. I could quibble with some things, but sometimes you just gotta have fun...

Chess Masters : The Endgame Episode 1
This is so bad I doubt I can watch another episode. 50 years ago the BBC made a ground breaking TV series about chess called The Master Game. It featured actual top players and achieved good ratings in the wake of interest sparked by the Fischer v Spassky match of 1972. This time they have decided to dumb down chess just about as far as it can with average club players masquerading as 'masters' ( an obvious joke given just how bad some of the chess actually is) and roping in y/t chess commentator and Grandmaster David Howell.  David is a very strong player and still ranked in the top 100 in the world, but even by his own admission has now peaked and so presumably finds it easier to make a living from commenting on chess rather than playing. He does this very well indeed although the obviously faked shock at certain moves being played by rank amateurs is well beneath him. Just plain sad stuff and yet another example of the BBC squandering millions of licence payers money on total drivel. 1/10

The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3

This highly successful animated spin off from the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons has received quite a lot of praise. I enjoyed it initially when it came along but it's become a law of increasingly diminished returns being hard to digest and difficult to ignore the clunky dialogue. As a spectacle it scores highly though. This season is perhaps noteworthy for being the last work of actor Lance Reddick (here voicing one of the most evil dragons) who you may know for his role in Bosch or the Netflix show Resident Evil. Overall 6/10

Mayfair Witches Season 2 - I've watched the first season but had little recollection as to what actually happened. Watching this new series I can see why. It's not gripping at all and to be honest is quite dull, which is a shame as the source material (by Anne Rice) is excellent. Alexandra Daddario is great to look at, but is wrong in this role unfortunately. So too is Harry Hamlyn. I've got 2 episodes left to watch and if there is a 3rd series, I'll be amazed after this boring effort. 3/10

Dexter: Original Sin
After the largely disappointing 'New Blood' reboot, we get this much better origins story. I love the teenage version of Debs ''Potty Mouth'' Morgan (played by the beautiful Molly Brown) and the young Dexter (Patrick Gibson) is well realised. Noted actors Patrick Dempsey and Christian Slater are also involved with Michael C Hall still doing the voice over Good stuff. 8/10

Unforgotten
Now up to its 6th season, this drama goes from strength to strength. The police investigate a body in the London marshes with possible links to immigration (illegal and legal), racism, and even the break down of the healthcare support system, plus of course those dark buried secrets that come back to haunt you. Truly fantastic writing that is relevant and up to date, supported by top quality acting, this never disappoints. 9/10

Peaky Blinders - season 6

Finally got to finish this show. Seemed like forever ago we watched season 5. Watching Murphy play a man confronting death by illness and the death of a child was something different from the other seasons. I wasn't totally blown away by this show like others, but I do enjoy British period pieces, and they did a great job with logistics. Looking forward to the movie someday.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Fun, high-speed 3D animated series occurring just after "Order 66" is given by Emperor Palpatine in SW:Episode Three and follows a small band of clone troopers who are genetically resistant to radical commands, making them skilled fighters but dangerous to the newly formed Galactic Empire.   With a young girl in tow, they break away from their home planet Kamino in search of what the Emperor has in mind and whichever Jedi have survived the clone army attack.   American voice actor Dee Bradley Baker vocalizes all the clones in the series with his best Aussie Strine, and was created by Dave Filoni running from 2021 thru '24.

TV is out of bounds at the moment for me as my wife is glued to the latest season of Married at First Site Australia - 35 at least one hour long episodes. Unhappy

^ yes it does! In the drama they speak fluently either Gaelic or English but it's just never one or the other. Amusingly, I heard the word 'Spondoolix' used as Gaelic for money yet this is used as slang in English the same way 'bread' or 'dough' is used. Presumably it's a Gaelic word and the slang came from that language I guess.
