Is it really one disc or 2 discs? Both were released on the same day, and later editions say the 2-disc is special, but is that a label choice or the band's choice? What is the original perception of how the band wishes to see the album? What was the original release of the album's tracklist, and if it's "technically" supposed to be one disc in its original format, what's the second disc made up of and why is it there? (Obviously this all excludes The Road of Bonus from discussion).

I have the two-disc version of "Road of Bones", which is referred to as a "Special Edition". The track listing is as follows: CD 1: 1. From the Outside In (7:24) 2. The Road of Bones (8:32) 3. Without Walls (19:15) 4. Ocean (5:55) 5. Until the End (12:00) CD 2: 1. Knucklehead (8:10) 2. 1312 Overture (4:17) 3. Constellations (12:24) 4. Fall and Rise (7:10) 5. Ten Million Demons (6:10) 6. Hardcore (10:52) I very highly recommend getting the two-disc version as the second disc is as good as the first disc. |

So what are these new tracks and why aren't they on the original release? It certainly wouldn't have been weird for them what with Subterranean being one of their classics.

This is a strange release ... apparently it was released simultaneously on CD with only five tracks and viritually with eleven. Then later the special edition on CD also featured 11 tracks. Seems like the initial release was incomplete.

As I said above, the two disc version is labelled as a "Special Edition". I believe that there is also a one disc version, but I don't recall if this was available to me at the time I purchased the album. I don't have any other IQ albums, so I don't know if the tracks on CD 2 are alternative versions of tracks on earlier albums. I assume that they are not as they do seem to me to be proper tracks, as if this was a double album. Perhaps these are tracks that fell outside of the concept of CD 1. Looking at Bandcamp, I see there are two versions available, a version corresponding to CD 1, and a "2 Disc Edition" which has all eleven tracks of the Special Edition that I have (I purchased the physical double CD album, but not from Bandcamp). It says that the extended two disc edition features an extra 50 minutes of new and exclusive material (confirming what I assumed above). "Exclusive" seems like a poor choice of words. I guess basically, I'd like to know which version is... "correct.". Was the 1 disc version released the way the album was intended? Or would that be the 2 disc? I haven't gotten to it yet, and when I wrote review on albums, I'd like to stick with the primary edition. So I'm not fully convinced that the 2-disc version is really a special edition if the original 2 disc edition wasn't released with that label.

I don't know what criteria would establish that unequivocally. I would say that because the first CD is currently available as a standalone version of the album, it is the "correct" version of the album. But the second CD isn't simply a bonus CD. It is a fully fledged album in its own right. Why it is not a separate album I don't know. I do however recommend the second CD even if it is not "correct".
The release I have, which may not be the original release of the 2 disc edition, specifically says "Special Edition". |

My concern is that they just slapped that special edition label on some time after the release, and that it wasn't the original intent. If they didn't want the album to be a double, what was the point of releasing a two-disc variant at the same time as the one-disc version at all, and especially when some include the Road of Bonus album?

Looking at the track list of the second disc of the "The Road of Bonus" version (which I do not have), it is clear that this is a bonus disc. That is not the case with the second disc of the "Special Edition". However, I'm inclined to think that calling the two disc version of the album a "Special Edition" implies that the first disc of the album (which I assume is the same in all versions) is the "correct" version of the album. Bottom line. The 2nd disc is just as good as the 1st disc. Both are masterpieces...in my opinion.

But it seems odd that they would plan it that way without calling it a special edition on the day of release. It tells me there may have been a different plan for the album than that and something didn't go as predicted. This is also partially about how the band themselves, as opposed to the label, wish the album to be perceived.
