Infinitum: Subject Unknown (2021) - A rather quirky, weird film where a woman is trapped in a parallel universe and seems to be experiencing time loops or some sort of quantum thingamajig going on where she is forced to find a way to alter her reality. The star of the film is Tori Butler-Hart who gives a commendable performance. Also features Ian McKellen and Conleth Hill, who both play very minor rolls as professors giving the "science" behind the experiment. This entire film was apparently shot on an iPhone during the UK's lockdown during the pandemic. Given the circumstances, I'm impressed with the results. I feel like some of the parts could have been fleshed out a bit better, but still worthy of an 8/10.

Fellini's Casanova (1976) - Amazing psychedelic movie, on par with his Satyricon, one of the craziest movie I have ever seen. Donald Sutherland (RIP) is amazing, and the film is probably Fellini's darkest work. Very creepy at times.

Becoming Led Zeppelin - I don't often go to Imax unless it's for something I REALLY wanna see.  A documentary on my favorite band of all time is just what it takes, especially since the band wa sextremely weary of documentaries before.  So this gave me some of what I've wanted for a long time: sitting down with the bandmates and hearing about everything they did before they formed the band, including that unreleased interview footage with Bonham!  In a spiritual way, that was the highlight.  Some of it was highly entertaining and made me wish I was there back then to see it.  And of course, for a guy who's heard a good deal of Zep bootlegs like Royal Albert Hall, Blueberry Hill, Ottawa Sunshine and Pure Blues, seeing the old concerts and the formation of such tropes as the violin solos in live renditions of Dazed and Confused.  There were a couple too many songs by the end when this was supposed to be a documentary, but overall, this was the documentary I've wanted for years.  And since it only covered the first two albums, I really want a sequel covering III, IV and Houses.  90/100

Monolith (2022) - Australian sci-fi thriller starring Lily Sullivan. Sullivan is the only actor shown in this film as all the other characters only appear as voices in phone conversations. It's about a disgraced journalist that's hiding at her parents home and starts podcasting about unsolved mysteries. She receives an anonymous e-mail that leads to a story revolving around some strange black bricks. The story builds as more and more people report their experiences with these bricks, including a German art collector that has a collection of them that have been scanned and analyzed. As the film progresses she discovers that she herself has a backstory with the first brick that was brought to her attention. No spoilers, but the ending scenes leave much open for interpretation. Very unique film. 9/10.

Corner Office (2022) - Although branded as a dark comedy, this peculiar take on corporate office culture is more of a quirky drama. Jon Hamm is the star and performs the role of new employee Orson, working at The Authority. Nice acting job on this, especially the first-person narration that is used throughout. Alienation is a main theme and it grows considerably when Orson discovers a room that he's told doesn't exist. I won't mention any spoilers, but there's a lot more going on here and I think it was designed this way to allow for audience interpretation. Don't expect anything like "The Office" and although it has similarities with Office Space, it's a much darker offering. It was based on the short story The Room by Jonas Karlsson (which I have not read). Also stars Christopher Heyerdahl (Stargate Atlantis). 8/10

Enjoyed it a lot as it had plenty of detail and just about the right amount of gore not to mention one of the most cringeworthy scenes you will likely see. Admittedly it's very far fetched but I felt there was just enough detail to make it plausible. 7/10

Companion - From the the blurb on IMDb "A weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin turns into chaos after it's revealed that one of the guests is not what they seem.". A clever movie and has a Black Mirror vibe. I really enjoyed this and the comedy elements made a big difference in what could have been a throw-away flick. 9/10

I do want to see this but it's a Netflix film so for me that rules it out as I am not prepared to rent or buy it. I gave up Netflix when I couldn't find any good TV to watch and they seemed to dump sci-fi aside from Squid Games which I massively struggled with.

^ I watched that an age ago, I might even have been a teenager at the time. Those early Beatles films were important to me when I was young. Nowadays I still watch Yellow Submarine but that's it. The BBC actually put out a documentary about the making of Magical Mystery Tour film a few years back. The film itself was first broadcast on Boxing Day 1967 (I think it was that year) in a prime time slot and only succeeded in triggering a flood of complaints from viewers. The BBC had commissioned it and gave carte blanche to the fab four to do whatever they wanted. Hilariously Auntie Beeb had expected something quirky and fun like A Hard Days Night. Oh dear!

Hi,

THE KNACK, and HOW TO GET IT. (1965). Directed by Richard Lester.

Funny funny and weird, and crazy and strange. You can see why he ended up doing the Beatles, but the sad part? No one here will ever see, and understand the surrealistic moments in this film right out of THE GOONS and their radio show. This was repeated even further with The Beatles, and some of them loved the radio show and made characters for their own "Christmas Shows" which were for the fan club, There were 7 of these, but the last one was strictly John and Yoko and not as funny ... but weird, yes!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

It's basically a hybrid movie (part sci-fi part rom-com) but I think it struggles to strike a consistent tone. Also I prefer my sci-fi to be as dark in tone as possible (ie pitch black) with some humour ('gallows humour' perhaps) allowed. Smile

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

The Gorge
Normally best to avoid Apple TV+ films as they are usually not very good, but the interesting casting of Miles Teller and Ana Taylor Joy roped me into this. Also I knew nothing about the premise so was intrigued. Can't say much as it would be a spoiler but I felt that it sagged a bit in the middle and could have had a much punchier ending. Technically a good film but nothing special. 6/10

I leave out the bad movies - don't want to advertise them

The Grim Reaper (1962) - 7.5/10
Nothing special, except that I saw it and finished it without pausing.

Pirosmani - 7/10
Very slow paced, but I liked it as it went along.
https://youtu.be/OnzjKLDBKXo

Mafioso - 7.5/10
One of the first movies to look at the Mafia..

Dawn of a New Day - 6.5/10
Egyptian melodrama in the ballpark of "All That Heaven Allows" and "Harold and Maude". There are so many better Egyptian movies than this, though.

Banditi a Orgosolo - 7/10

Nayak - 7/10

I had to look this up. Apparently a 2014 film that had an English language remake called Cold Pursuit. It reminded me that Skarsgard made another Norwegian film back in 1997 called Insomnia that was then remade by Christopher Nolan and starred Al Pacino. Skarsgard is a fine actor with some great credits inc Chernobyl and both Dune films. Fun fact: he has 8 children and 7 are active in TV and films ( Alexander being the most famous I would suggest) with the 8th a doctor. Skardgard had a vasectomy after his eighth child was born!
