ELP and Zappa are fine, but Yessongs is the best live album ever imho (even though there are some serious contenders).

according to Tibor Kneif's book "Sachlexikon der Rockmusik" ("Technical Dictionary of Rock Music") "Yessongs" has lots of overdubs. Kneif was a German musicologist who specialized in rock and jazz. he was the first musicologist who held lectures on rock music at a German university (at the Freie Universität Berlin)

^ Very interesting point. I also think it is badly sequenced with the false climax of 'Roundabout' at the end of side 3. I love the album but I much prefer ELP's effort these days (despite the dodgy production). Such a great live band.

Magma. I assume you are referring to La Trilogie au Trianon.

Poor Soft Machine with no votes. When that was released in 1977, no one had heard recordings of the original four piece (with Daevid Allen), apart from the 'Love Makes Sweet Music' single (which quickly got pulled) nor the short-lived seven piece in the 1969 BBC sessions (unless someone had taped them off the radio when they were originally broadcast). The latter made disc 2 somewhat sublime.

Same for me, only the other way 'round. Despite the poor sound quality "Yessongs" just edges "Welcome back...".

ELP versus Yes. None of the others come even close.

I imagine that if two votes was an option they would be tied way in front.

I had a listen to both the Yes and ELP outings after seeing the love shown for them in this poll. Pretty good stuff and I rather dig the live version of Tarkus.
I still very much prefer Lotus though. I guess because of the exact same reason most members are voting for ELP and Yes: it’s an old love affair |

If I had to vote for one song from the albums in this poll it would be that version of "Tarkus" from "Wecome Back...". It is one of those live tracks that manages to surpase its studio conterpart IMHO...although "Starship Troopers" from "Yessongs" does give it a run for its money.

ELP. Not a great fan of Yessongs nowadays although I'm suprised that no one commented on the version of Yours Is No Disgrace that is on there. Steve Howe is incredible! But that is literally the only thing I care about on there when comparing the live versions of the tracks to the studio versions. My only criticism of ELP's album is that the overlong and boring drum solo nearly spoils Karn Evil 9. The recent deluxe editions of WBMFTTSTNE have also fixed the sound issues for me and interestingly are the only deluxe editions of their first 6 albums that have no bonus tracks (so it's just about the sound)
