Last night while listening to return to ommadawn it dawned on (see what you did to me Paul? ) me to do this poll.
Anyway, two later ones by Mike here. I'm not sure I really see (hear) the appeal of Amarok. It sounds a bit herky jerky to me. RtO sounds much more like classic Oldfield but I need to hear more of both.

I was planning to return to this poll at dawn, but I may as well vote now while I'm here.

I copped out with 'both equally'. I like both a lot but neither is at the level of his first 4 although they take something from that era more than any other albums he made post 1978.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I think Return is a beautiful disk and have voted for it, purely because out of the two, I would prefer to hear it more often. I respect Amarok a great deal and think its brilliant, but it's one of those disks where I really have to be in the mood...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Ommadawn. I like its angular wave numbers and fruity Schrödinger cheeses.

Return to Ommadawn is very nice, although I prefer the original first four albums. Amarok is too disjointed for me.

Amarok is the greatest album Oldfield has ever done. It's so perfectly and utterly bizarre and brilliant that I love every nanosecond of it.
Return to Ommadawn was a decent return to form that I'm glad to have in my collection. But at the end of the day, it's just another Oldfield album.

I voted for I only know Amarok, and I never really became a Mike Oldfield fan despite enjoying Oldfield music. Maybe I would be if I put some effort into it but I'm plowing different fields now (there's a Sally Oldfield reference related by way of Sally Field). Some old fields are best left fallow.
