Inspired by one of AFlowerKingCrimson's polls pitting a Yes song vs. a Gentle Giant song here's ditty from me with three classics from much loved bands from 1971.
Caravan - Winter Wine (In the Land of Grey and Pink, 1971) Gentle Giant - Pantagruel's Nativity (Acquiring the Taste, 1971) VdGG - Man-Erg (Pawn Hearts, 1971) Much as I do like Winter Wine, it is really between Man-Erg and Pantagruel's Nativity for me. All three are off fantastic albums. Much as I love Pantagruel, I am going with Man-Erg. Edited by Logan - November 21 2024 at 17:58 |

Caravan are just too 'hippy dippy' for my taste.
GG have some of the greatest tracks of the prog era but there is a lot I don't care for as well. This track is undoubtedly one of their best. The VDGG track is just remarkable so it does come down to that and the GG track. VDGG is the one giving me goosebumps so I vote for that. The way the mood shifts back and forth is just one of the things that I love about it but mostly it's perfect. Said it before but Pawn Hearts may well be the best prog album. Pity they didn't then release anything until the almost equally brilliant Godbluff in 1975. I suppose to be fair they had to let the rest of the prog world catch up.

Winter Wine is a great tune, but Pantagruel towers over it for me
Pretty much agree with this, Man-Erg (and Pawn Hearts as a whole) still gives the chills and is one of my favorite tracks so I voted for that |

It's rather like being asked to choose between a fine cup of Earl Grey and a pint of bitter; both are splendid in their own right, yet utterly distinct in character. Thus, I clicked on 'rather not choose between them.'

Three of my favorites from all three. As for how I'm feeling right now, I would have chosen to listen to Caravan, but "rather not choose between them" feels the most correct for me.

I like all three, but Man-Erg maybe a little better than the other two. I have painstakingly recreated a box of parabolas inside my verb dispenser.

I like all three but chose GG. VDGG would be a close 2nd. I know the Caravan but need to listen to that song (and album) more.

The Caravan was an afterthought as when I was preparing the videos, youtube was on autoplay and went to Caravan's 9 Feet Underground next. I love the epic, longer than I wanted for this poll, but "Winter Wine" never meant much to me (the title track I still remember very well as well as "9 Feet" and "Golf Girl". I have not been nearly as into Caravan as VdGG and GG. By the way, In the Land of Grey and Pink was one of the earliest Prog albums I can remember hearing (back in the 70s). It's one of those albums that was in the collection of various older brothers that I knew. In the early 2000s I rediscovered the album and got very into it again, but then I moved on to other things like GG and VdGG, and then Magma, Art Zoyd, Faust, Popol Vuh, Henry Cow, then later Radiohead. Swans etc.
Shout out to Caravan fan, Micky, who would talk with me about them quite a lot. I hope he is well. He's one of many that I miss here. |
