list/discuss/rate - your recently watched movies

^ I watched another of his recent films Old not long ago and thought I might have reviewed it but doesn't seem so. I enjoyed it although the ending does smack a bit of one of those that was reshot because of test screening quibbles. Could have ended before it actually ended with too much explanation for my liking. Keep the mystery! 7/10

Three Poplars in Plyushchikha - 7.5/10
A movie friend I know recommended me this, describing it like "Brief Encounter" (Lean). When I saw the photograph of the woman, I wanted to see the movie. The other two times I did see a movie based on a face (thanks to Stirchley posting), they were both great. I really liked this woman, but I also like to see how things are (even if it's just a movie) in Russia.. She was so flirtatious in the first half of the movie, but in a very cute way.

I loved a comment she made about America.. "It's dangerous there"

And it's on Tubi.

Borderlands - This got absolutely slaughtered in reviews so I had very low expectations. I think the problem people were having with this movie was the difference between it and the beloved game of the same name. Me, I don't care about the game and had no idea what it was about before viewing this flick. Well I thought it was pretty good. A great cast (if a little miscast here and there), and an enjoyable romp too. I did laugh out loud a few times - but I like Kevin Hart anyway so to me he can do no wrong. Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis dialed it really but they at least gave it their all. Not overlong either, which some recent movies suffer from. It was actually filmed and in the can back in 2021 but needed some reshoots and hence a revised score to round it all off. Where it is a let down is its rating. It would have been much better as R rated - I mean this is Eli Roth we're talking about (Hostel etc.). Not bad at all - 7/10

I was never a fan of westerns but lately have really been enjoying them--- the most interesting one I've seen recently was The Sisters Brothers with Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly.

The Substance - The blurb from IMDd: - "A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself."

I read that people left the cinema when this was first shown. I can sort of get that if you are very squeamish. Body Horror is a good description for it. All the actors were superb and there is a lot of nudity (but not in a sexual way). It went on just a bit too long though and it would have been better without the rather silly final scenes. If you like David Cronenburg's movies you'll love this. 8/10
