Trap - Another M. Night Shyamalan offering. I like most of his stuff, but some are much better than others - this one I really like. The excellent Josh Hartnett stars in this strange movie as he takes his teen daughter to a music concert - as he enters the arena he notices an unlikely amount of police on the doors and exits - and I'll leave it there to avoid any spoilers. It rips along at a great pace and is never dull. It seems the story is loosely based on a real incident - wow if it was. 9/10

^ I watched another of his recent films Old not long ago and thought I might have reviewed it but doesn't seem so. I enjoyed it although the ending does smack a bit of one of those that was reshot because of test screening quibbles. Could have ended before it actually ended with too much explanation for my liking. Keep the mystery! 7/10

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

Fun and well-paced if rompish spy thriller about the first major special operation by Britain against German U-boat forces in Spain with Henry Cavill leading a small group of commandos, secretly directed by Churchill in an unauthorized sabotage mission that changed the course of WWII.   Based on the 2014 book Churchill's Secret Warriors:The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII by Damien Lewis.

Three Poplars in Plyushchikha - 7.5/10
A movie friend I know recommended me this, describing it like "Brief Encounter" (Lean). When I saw the photograph of the woman, I wanted to see the movie. The other two times I did see a movie based on a face (thanks to Stirchley posting), they were both great. I really liked this woman, but I also like to see how things are (even if it's just a movie) in Russia.. She was so flirtatious in the first half of the movie, but in a very cute way.

I loved a comment she made about America.. "It's dangerous there"

And it's on Tubi.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Brooding, grey, and lovely psychological thriller tracing the last few months of the famous American outlaw and the man who both revered and hated him.   Literary, at times poetic, even at its full three hours it's time well-spent.   Based on the 1983 novel by Ron Hansen.

Borderlands - This got absolutely slaughtered in reviews so I had very low expectations. I think the problem people were having with this movie was the difference between it and the beloved game of the same name. Me, I don't care about the game and had no idea what it was about before viewing this flick. Well I thought it was pretty good. A great cast (if a little miscast here and there), and an enjoyable romp too. I did laugh out loud a few times - but I like Kevin Hart anyway so to me he can do no wrong. Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis dialed it really but they at least gave it their all. Not overlong either, which some recent movies suffer from. It was actually filmed and in the can back in 2021 but needed some reshoots and hence a revised score to round it all off. Where it is a let down is its rating. It would have been much better as R rated - I mean this is Eli Roth we're talking about (Hostel etc.). Not bad at all - 7/10

I enjoyed that film a lot although it's ages since I watched it. Love a good western!

Hi,

Catching up on a few things ...

El Topo ... didn't realize I had not reviewed this or remembered it well at all.

5 Easy Pieces and Easy Rider ... really far out and well done, and a very clear example of Americana even with its ....

The Revenant ... had not seen this before ... very nice and the music was excellent by Mogwai.

Sense and Sensibility ... I'm not a great fan of the Austen/Bronte anything, and the film (Ang Lee) was nice but by the end, I could safely say I was wondering where the next woman crying was going to be! At least it ends in a very positive note ... but the twists and turns are tough and sad. Some interesting acting choices.

Beckett ... Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole hack it out ... and it has excellent moments, even though the acting for me, in this film (made in 1964!!!) was too stodgy and and "posed" for the cameras ... and the best lines in it it are Peter O'Toole's who I think had decided he was not going to pose and provide a different point of view to Richard Burton ... you could say that it was the old school versus the new school of acting.

Vincent & Theo ... a very interesting film, and quite enjoyable, though it is Robert Altman and his take on things are often strange and weird, but they work OK here. Nice performances that I'm not sure are given a chance as it is a talkie film, that does not spend as much time on the art as it does on Vincent's way of life and living.

I Am Damo ... the special done about Damo Suzuki before he passed away ... very energetic and strong, and the appreciation for a true artist of the heart is ... difficult to watch at times ... but his smile and energy is enough to carry you.

This month, I have mostly been watching movies starring Daniel Craig, who doesn't care whether his dry Martini is shaken or stirred. Smile

I was never a fan of westerns but lately have really been enjoying them--- the most interesting one I've seen recently was The Sisters Brothers with Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly.

Damaged 2024
Well this latest Samuel L Jackson dark thriller hasn't gone down well at all. Straight to streaming it seems! Samuel L phones in his performance and the plot is about as ludcrous as it gets. That isn't necessarily a deal breaker but it doesn't know whether it wants to be a 'popcorn movie' (which it mostly is) or lean heavily to Seven territory. It certainly has delusions of grandeur but had that 'a ton of footage got lost on the cutting room floor' feel about it in order to bring it into a serviceable just over an hour and half long. Could have been a good 'bad film' but actually is probably just a bad film. I did get to the end though and it's not the worst I've seen this year to be fair. 4/10

Odd little film from 2021 starring Nicholas Cage. It successfuly defies your expectation, this is about a man living ''off grid'' forced to come back into civilisation. You think you know what's coming next , but you don't. I liked it and Cage returns to his indie roots to give a commendable performance. 7/10

Road House
Stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an ex-UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a bar on the Florida keys. It's very shallow story wise but I enjoyed it with a few beers. Perhaps most notable for the debut film performance of actual UFC champion Conor McGregor. No real acting required.6/10

Apartment 7A
This is one of those 'why did they bother?' kinda remakes of a classic horror film that wasn't needed. What classic horror film would that be you may ask? Well part of the fun is spotting what it is so I won't spoil it. Actually that is the only 'fun' to be had. Largely this is very flat and trods very familiar ground whilst failing to spring any surprises. Julia Garner's character is just too 'passive' for me, having been so impressive in Ozark playing a loud mouthed and spikey young 'lady', here she is just muted. I get a sense she is strong but is it enough? Maybe if you haven't seen Ozark then you may be more pre-disposed to liking it. 5/10

Deadpool & Wolverine - It's rude, crude, violent, hilarious, action-packed and barely a second is wasted on filler. Brilliant 10/10

The Substance - The blurb from IMDd: - "A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself."

I read that people left the cinema when this was first shown. I can sort of get that if you are very squeamish. Body Horror is a good description for it. All the actors were superb and there is a lot of nudity (but not in a sexual way). It went on just a bit too long though and it would have been better without the rather silly final scenes. If you like David Cronenburg's movies you'll love this. 8/10

American Fiction 2023
A vehicle for noted actor Jeffrey Wright who has done sterling work in the TV shows Westworld and Boardwalk Empire as well as several films. This is not terribly original but has some interesting thoughts on black culture (here it's specifically books written by black authors) and the plot develops into a strangely ironic situation after Wright's character pens a book under a pseudonym and ends up on the panel judging it for a literary award. Not quite a satire and not quite funny enough to be a comedy it comes off as a bit lightweight and the dreaded 'quirky'. It's very okay. 7/10
