Active from 2004 to 2015, 3epkano were a post-rock band from Dublin, Ireland, founded by guitarist, composer and film/media lecturer Matthew Nolan. The group's name is a romanisation of the Cyrillic title of Andrei Tarkovsky's 1975 film Зеркало ("Mirror"), an appropriate reference for a group dedicated to improvised live performances scoring silent films of the early 20th century.

On stage and on record, Nolan was accompanied by fellow electric guitarist Cameron Doyle, drummer James Mackin, cellist Lioba Petrie, bassists David Gough and Laurence Mackin, violists Karen Dervan and Abigail Smith and keyboardist Richard McCullough. 3epkano's brand of instrumental chamber-post-rock is reminiscent of like-minded projects En Plein Air, Neil on Impression and Rachel's (indeed, Nolan would later invite the latter's Rachel Grimes to collaborate on live scores in 2016 and 2019).

All released via Doyle and Nolan's label Smiling Politely Records, 3epkano's discography consists of an 2006 EP and two full-lengths: 2007's At Land and 2011's Hans the Reluctant Wolf Juggler. Doyle and Petrie continued to play together in the wake of 3epkano's dissolution, beginning the Unshaped Form project in 2015.

I can read Cyrillic and at first glance the name confused the living shіt out of me. Also (forgive my nitpicking), the name is NOT a romanization. It's an example of "Faux Latin Script" which is the opposite of "Faux Cyrillic".

Apparently it's supposed to be "зеркало", which they got wrong it seems.

They didn't get it wrong per se. They did however use approximate Latin Script characters to spell it (which is non standard). It's like when someone types Russia as ЯЦЅЅІД.

They did get it wrong because they replaced "л" (L) with a "n".

The Cyrillic L (л) doesn't have an obvious lookalike ersatz glyph in the Latin alphabet, so the closest "ballpark" option is n.

I get it. So what is the name of the band?
So they named their band after a 70s Russian science-fiction movie named "зеркало" which means "mirror".

So if they name their band "3epkano", what do they mean? how do they read that?! Is it just a misspelling of a Russian word?! Confused

Yes, it is. A misspelling of a Russian word using lookalike letters from an inappropriate alphabet (Latin instead of Cyrillic). Hope it's clear now.

I got that, too. Still the band name makes little sense (the way it's spelled and knowing where they got the word from, and that there is no "n" letter or sound in the Russian word).

They were probably just trying to be edgy and "avant-garde" xD I wouldn't be surprised if the leader of the band was trying to push a completely bogus pronunciation of that name.

I made the necessary change to their bio, and they're now added.

I'm listening to their 3rd album and it's very good.
Unfortunately we can't use the alphabetical search for them on the home page as the 3 is not listed
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Regardless of liberties they may have taken in the spelling... How do you pronounce it? zerkalo? zerkano? three-ep-kay-no?
