Always thought it was some lame, commercial indie-rock band. I was dead wrong! I haven't listened to their other albums, but Innerspeaker is an absolute masterpiece. It's like a blend of all the greatest psychedelic rock bands from the late 60's. But, what I didn't expect, are the soul/jazz vibes. It almost sounds like the Canterbury Scene at times.
I hope their other albums sound similar. What do you think about this band? Edited by Gnik Nosmirc - July 05 2024 at 08:27 |

I have "Innerspeaker", and it is a great album. I also have "Lonerism", but it didn't have the same appeal to me (though I have not listened to it enough).

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I will try Lonerism next. I've read that they often shift in style.

A couple of pretty decent tunes. Probably a bit dated though. I love let it happen on the next album I think

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

How is it dated?
I tried Lonerism, it was relatively in the same vein, though a bit less powerful. |

Yeah, the "dated" sound is the quintessence of Tame Impala's shtick! It's a shame their sound got gradually less "rock" and "prog" oriented starting with Lonerism.

yep, a good neo psych album
If you liked it, try the band called The Pond ( they backed Tame Impala's leader) less popy and more adventurous imho Edited by mellotronwave - July 06 2024 at 04:05 |

I listened to their three other albums, and while Lonerism was still in the vein of their first masterpiece, though less impactful, the rest is too modern and pop-ish for my taste.
I found a great album with similar vibes called Azur by Triptides. |

Currents is my favourite abum by them. My Nephew is a big fan and turned me on this artist. BTW Tame Impala is not a band as such but a project by producer Kevin Parker (an Aussie) who also writes and performs all the music himself.

Has a bit of a Beatles Sabbath copy. The earliest stuff sounds like Cream etc |

After reading this thread, I watched three Tame Impala album ranking videos. All three videos placed Innerspeaker last. What gives?
I haven't listened to any Tame Impala.

After "Lonerism" Kevin Parker very much shifted towards a full-on Pop direction. He started referencing largely pop influences (Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Kylie Minogue, even The Bee Gees) in interviews as well. I mean... Rihanna covered "New Person, Same Old Mistakes" in 2016. I think any folks doing album reviews now are likely evaluating them through a Pop lens. From that perspective "Innerspeaker" is definitely the least produced, least accessible album. I still love it, though! I got to see them play in a church basement in Philly on the Innerspeaker tour in 2011 - so I have a lot of nostalgia for that specific record. At the time we were all calling them "Dungen Lite" - because they really sounded like the Swedish psych rock band Dungen. If you dig "Innerspeaker" you should definitely check out Dungen - particularly the records from 2010 and before. |

I really enjoyed Innerspeaker and have followed the band ever since. I thought Lonerism and the Live versions albums even had a proggy feel.
Random thought: recently I was listening to "La mente vola", by italian prog rock band Alphataurus, and felt like the drums in the intro sounded a lot like Tame Impala's... |
