Second sentence you wrote there needs an example, otherwise it's meaningless. Top 100 does not include prog-related bands. PF's Wish You Were here has a rating of 4.64/ 4527 ratings | 325 reviews and DSotM has a rating of 4.51/ 4713 ratings | 404 reviews. Not much of a difference. Both are miles better than The Wall (which I think it's overrated here on PA ).

Yes only made 3 amazing records (TYA, Fragile & CTTE), although the others have their moments.
Prog doesn't need to have complex time signatures, or virtuosic members. Genesis was still making great progressive music well into the late 80's. Derek Sherinian was just as good as Kevin Moore and Jordan Rudess. The only good part of Tubular Bells is the beginning. Return to Forever > Mahavishnu Orchestra The only truly amazing ELP record is the first one.

Fragile is overrated, the long songs are great indeed, the short ones make the albums feel disjointed (for me obviously) "Prog doesn't need to have complex time signatures, or virtuosic members." - maybe not, but skilled musicians surely make the music more entertaining (most of the time). Yes, Derek Sherinian is great. Kevin Moore is my favorite DT keyboardist though. "Return to Forever > Mahavishnu Orchestra" - not a hot take IMO, I agree. "The only truly amazing ELP record is the first one." - some people will totally agree with this.

I never found that much of a problem with the short tracks on Fragile... really, the only one I think could be better is Cans for Brahms, which I have read Wakeman actually intended to use what became Catherine of Aragon instead... it even features the whole Yes in 6 Wives... and that single change would have helped the album so much. We Have Heaven doesn't bother me at all, and it actually segues nicely into South Side of the Sky, so it doesn't really hurt the continuity of the album. Five Percent is so short that if you get distracted you won't even notice that it passed. The Fish segues so nicely from Long Distance Runaround, that I don't feel that song is complete without the other. And Mood for a Day is actually a beautiful piece of music. |

The default excludes the Prog Related and Proto-Prog categories from the chart, but I played around with the url and you can see it here. CLICK for chart including Proto-Prog and Prog Related It's in 34th place for all categories and all years. As for the "if an album gives a "normal" person a headache, it will receive positive reviews on Prog Archives", yeah we do that on purpose to weed out the conventionally boring. ;) Normal is for other sites, this site expects extraordinary, or at least abnormal. Not sure about the word 'amazing'. Are we talking 'original', 'ground breaking' 'unique' or something like that? Often 'consistency' is considered important by many but that doesn't mean 'amazing'. In terms of great playing then all Yes albums from TYA to 90125 have that. ELP likewise goes as far as Works. Prog doesn't need complex time signatures. True. Dave Stewart (the prog one) was a already parodying this idea with his band Egg back in 1970 with 'Seven Is A Jolly Good Time'. Check it out. Genesis made some good tracks in the 80's such as Dodo, Domino and Home By The Sea. 'Great progressive music' is a stretch. More throwing a bone to their few remaining prog fans! The Dream Theater one is hardly a revelation. Tubular Bells is mostly recognised for the opening section but it is mostly very inventive and highly original music that drew on some wider influences. Maybe his later albums are 'better' but are they just better organised? I so don't care about Jazz fusion where its 'how many angels dance on the head of a pin' type arguments. Both bands had incredible players disappearing up their own backsides a lot of the time. Personally I reckon the British band Colosseum made the only jazz rock stuff that is worth listening to. Like I said, it feels disjointed to me. I'll give it another listen soon to see if I can go along with your view here. What have i been missing all those years... ?!

Just listen to the Agusa album for the first time that apparently has won PA Album of the Year. It doesn't sound particularly interesting to me. I think I've heard some 60 prog albums of 2023 and no way would this have entered my top 40.

Listening to the album now, still feel the album lacks flow (just my opinion). "The Fish segues so nicely from Long Distance Runaround, that I don't feel that song is complete without the other." - that is true, I agree, it should have been one song. They played it live like that.

Not really hot takes. Derek burned it up on "A Change of Seasons." His keyboard solo is one of the best found on any DT album. I love both RTF & MO, but I own more albums by Weather Report than either.
Not so much a hot take, just a wrong take. |

A Change of Seasons was written with Kevin Moore, they played the song live during the Images & Words tour, so Kevin deserves the praise here. Derek was great on Falling Into Infinity, that I agree.

^Thanks, Cristi. That's very different (and shorter) than what Derek played. Jordan's solo on Scenes from New York is the longest (and most tempo-varied) of the three. All are great. I do think I like Derek's best, as it achieves the perfect balance of shred and chromatic coloration.

Hi, It is a very nice album, but their previous is much better in my ears. I've played that album a heck of a lot more than this new one, which is nice, but not as far out and neat as the previous one.

Hot take: The remixed L'Heptade XL by Harmonium sounds worse than the original mix IMO. They should've done just remasters without tinkering with the mixes. The XL version suffers from very odd unfitting EQ decisions, overuse of reverb and compression, and annoyingly obvious digital reverbs that don't go well with that organic 70's Harmonium sound. :( For example the final upfront brass riff on Le Premier Ciel (XL version) lacks that crispy power the original had. It's overmixed and drowned in unnecessary reverb.

Peter Banks was a better guitar player than Steve Howe.
