A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists

ZOPP      Finally, this is what I've been waiting for! In the Dominion of Canterbury Scene bands, Zopp are one of the best British bands who barely anyone has ever heard of. Zopp may be new to the Canterbury Scene, but they're better than Hatfield & the North, better than National Health, and dare I say it, better than Caravan too! Geek

^It is a good album. And a six star rating is impressive!

Yet, is it better than Khan "Space Shanty" that we both rate highly?

Why am I not surprised you hate Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom and rate Zopp ahead Hatfield and National Health. Zopp is a nice album but c'mon!

At this moment in time, I'd say Zopp's Dominion album is by far the best of the 300+ Canterbury Scene albums I've listened to in total over the last four years, but that all may change in a year's time once the novelty has worn off, in the same way as The Quest no longer comes Close to the Edge of being my favourite YES album two years on. Embarrassed

A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists

ZYMA      Finally, four years, 90+ artists and 300+ albums later, it's the last but not least Canterbury Scene artist, and what a great way to finish! Zyma are one of only two German Canterbury Scene bands, alongside Tortilla Flat. They may be at the end of the alphabet, but Zyma are leaders of the pack in terms of musical ability, but then again, we wouldn't expect anything less from the Germans. Danke Schoen und Guten Nacht. Thumbs Up

4 stars 1979: Zyma - Brave New World - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJbotZE5lV4

^Thanks for doing this, Paul. Very complete and informative.

The Canterbury genre is still one of my faves after 48 years of listening.

At least I'm predictable. I've tried to like Robert Wyatt by listening to all of his albums again yesterday, but I'm afraid he still remains at the rock bottom of my Canterbury Scene pile, alongside Hugh Hopper. Ribbit. 🐸

Paul, have you tried playing Robert Wyatt backward, on a Thursday morning? Wink

I love the new Zopp album.  I'll compare it with my favorites from my Canterbury collection.  Get ready to rumble with tea and crumpets and Canterbury.

Zopp are the Topps for me and the music goes nicely with tea and crumpets too.  Thumbs Up

Hi,

I guess that comment might be a bit over the zopp somewhere, but I agree that both albums are excellent. Wonderful listens, regardless of it being Canterbury tea or bones!

I think that is one of the most satisfying listens in some time. Very very nice!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Both Zopp lps are wonderful  ....  heard them on you tube but will be ordering them soon.
But.....imho they are not better than the classic Canterbury lps by Hatfield and Nat Health.....they are as good as in some ways but imho they don't have that same vibe that the female singers (Parson, Gaskins ,et al and Sinclair) as well as the writing Stewart et al brought to Hatfield and others.
But I 'm glad Zopp is emulating the older sounds.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Not many bands can top Zopp and it's good to see they have many fans here with both of their superb albums in PA's Canterbury Scene Top 30 too. Thumbs Up

It's a long road we've been Travelling together all aboard our Magic Bus with a Caravan on tow and following the sign for Hatfield & the North on the Canterbury Scene trail (which isn't a Quantum Jump away from Jazz Rock/Fusion). Undoubtedly, there's been a whole Soft Heap of goodies to savour, but two outstanding golden Gong artists for me were  Zopp & Zyma, who arrived by special Delivery right at the end of the trail, although they were well worth waiting for.  I was left with Egg on my face though after giving Robert Wyatt's acclaimed Rock Bottom album a 2-star rating, Cos anyone with National Health specs can see it's worth more than that, especially bearing in mind Rock Bottom is right near the top of PA's Canterbury Scene chart at #2. Ouch

Great list. However, I'd like to recommend you add The Worm Ouroboros to your list because they undoubtedly deserve to be on any list of non-English 'Canterburians' due to their two albums, which are both magnificent. Musically, their fantastic albums are as 'Cantebury' as they are musically perfect, with intricately complex yet captivating tracks.
