Very close call between A Night at the Opera and Queen II, but I ultimately have to go with the former. To me, Queen II is stronger on an individual song-by-song basis, whereas A Night at the Opera is a more cohesive, singular work. And in all honesty, I prefer that sense of cohesion and connection. Again though, both albums are amazing.
Also, ANatO has my favorite Queen song, The Prophet's Song Edited by Necrotica - October 25 2023 at 16:49 |

3 albums have got about 80% of the votes. WOW. Any other long running bands that would have this result for only 3 albums I wonder?

For what it's worth, Sheer Heart Attack isn't even in my top 5 by Queen. Other than the albums I mentioned above, I would also pick Jazz, Innuendo, and possibly even A Day at the Races above that one

Every album from Opera to Jazz is IMO very consistent quality-wise, but my vote goes to Opera, because Bohemian Rhapsody and The Prophets' Song are on it.

This band must hold the record for "Most Great Albums Ruined By One-or-Two Embarrassing Songs".
The only one I can listen to all the way through is The Game.

Yes, it's typical over-the-top Freddie, but nowhere near as intolerable as "Get Down Make Love" and "Body Language".

Interestingly, if you ask in a context very different from this one, the preferences will be very different. This vote mostly focuses on their early work, but I was at a party some time ago where the toastmaster insisted on playing Queen songs half of the time. It was all about "Radio Gaga", "A Kind of Magic", "I Want To Break Free", "Another One Bites the Dust", "I Want It All", "Who Wants to Live Forever" and so on. All 80's stuff, and I don't think even "Bohemian Rhapsody" was ever played.

For me they did their best work pre-Night at the Opera, when they still seemed to be aspiring to be a serious rock band, i.e before they went for a more commercial sound. [Others may disagree.] My favourite album being 'Sheer Hear Attack', closely followed by 'Queen II', and 'Queen'. With an honourable mention for the dark and moody 'Innuendo' (IMO the finest of their later works).

No Pressure from Hot Space, but it still received a surprising three votes for best Queen album in the poll, although I suspect that's purely on the strength of this song.....

Hot Space isn't perfect by any means, but I always thought it was a bit overhated. Staying Power, Action This Day, Put Out the Fire, Back Chat, and of course, Under Pressure are all really solid tunes in my opinion.
Granted, I do prefer the more heavy, beefed-up Live at the Bowl version of Action This Day

Ordered from the most valued by me, and with the 3 or 4 songs that I like the most, which doesn't mean that they are the only ones. There are some songs that I haven't included, like "Radio Gaga" or "Spread Your Wings", whose live versions are much better than the studio ones. 1. Queen II - (The March Of The Black Queen / Fairy Fellers Master Stroke / Nevermore) 2. A Night at the Opera - (The Prophet´s Song / Bohemian Rhapsody / I'm In Love With My Car) 3. Sheer Heart Attack - (Tenement Funster / Flick Of the Wrist / Lily Of The Valley / In The Lap Of The Gods) 4. Innuendo - (Innuendo / The Show Must Go On / These Are The Days Of Our Lives) 5. Queen - (Great King Rat / Liar / My Fairy King) 6. Jazz - (If You Can't Beat Them / Dead On Time / More Of That Jazz / Mustapha) 7. A Day at the Races - (Somebody To Love / Teo Torriate / The Millionaire Waltz) 8. News of the World - ( We Are The Champions / All Dead, All Dead / It´s Late) 9. The Miracle - (Was It All Worth It / I Want It All / Khashoggi's Ship) 10. The Game - (Save Me / Need Your Loving Tonight / Rock It) 11. The Works - (It´s A Hard Life / Hammer To Fall / I Want To Break Free) 12. Flash Gordon - ( The Hero / The Wedding March / Football Fight) 13. A Kind of Magic - (Princes Of The Universe / Friends Will Be Friends / Who Wants To Live Forever) 14. Made in Heaven - (Too Much Love Will Kill You / My Life Has Been Saved / I Was Born To Love You) 15. Hot Space - (Under Pressure / Put Of The Fire / Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love)) |

Flash Gordon would actually make my top five. Its got synths (yeah!) and a return to the wild progiishness approach of the earlier albums. IMO

News of the World, more anthems than others. More introspective ballads than others. And the only punk song they ever recorded.
