RICHARD SINCLAIR The most instantly recognisable face and voice in the entire Canterbury Scene, although still virtually unknown outside of the progosphere. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

SOFT HEAP A supergroup (or superheap!?) of four Canterbury Scene luminaries brought together from two previous Canterbury Scene bands. Namely, National Health and Soft Machine. Soft Heap consists of Hugh Hopper (bass), Elton Dean (saxophone), Alan Gowen (keyboards) and Pip Pyle (drums). The name of the band is an obvious reference to Soft Machine with the initials of the four band members Christian names spelling out the name H.E.A.P, which brings to mind another famous band named after their initials: ELP - of which BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel once said, "They're a waste of talent and electricity", which I thought was very unfair, so I'll refrain from saying the same about Soft Heap, where the 2-star album ratings speak for themselves. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

SOFT MACHINE Inspired by the title of a William S. Burroughs novel, The Soft Machine formed in Canterbury back in 1966 and went on to become arguably the third-best-known Canterbury Scene band in the world (after Quantum Jump and Caravan). The Soft Machine line-up featured a veritable Who's Who of future Canterbury Scene legends, including Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean, Gong-founder Daevid Allen, and later, Welsh Adiemus maestro Karl Jenkins. Soft Machine are the kings of the comeback, and as one door closes, another opens. Just when you thought it was all over for Soft Machine in 1976 with the break-up of the band, there was a Live Paris reunion album in 1978, followed by three three more studio albums spread out over the next 45 years, including a brand new album for 2023: the aptly-titled "Other Doors". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Soft Machine - Sprouting up Live in Brussels in 1971. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 04 2024 at 05:19 |

A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists SOFT MOUNTAIN Not to make a Soft Mountain out of a Matching Mole hill, but this is the kind of rambling, unlistenable and unstructured free-form jazz album that gives Canterbury Scene music a bad name. You'd be better off listening to Moleslope or Soft Machine Legacy instead. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - November 15 2023 at 05:29 |

SOFT WORKS Another Soft Machine spin-off, consisting of Canterbury Scene stalwarts Allan Holdsworth, Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper and John Marshall, although the sum of all the parts is somewhat less than magical. ![]() ![]() (Part 2) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=076nKRVC8q4 |

SUPPLY DEMAND & CURVE Irish Canterbury Scene bands are obviously in short supply, as this band are the only one there's ever been, but then again, there's not much of a demand for Canterbury Scene music in the Emerald Isle where the local pub goers are more likely to enjoy a jolly old craic and knees-up with an Irish fiddler and a pint of Guinness in hand until they're banjaxed at the end of the evening, begorrah. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - November 16 2023 at 04:23 |

Temple of Shibboleth (billiebottle.co.uk)
An all-female, contemporary, Canterbury style band from Devon UK. Billie bottle has played with David Sinclair from Caravan and Richard Sinclair guest on their debut lp on Bass. These gals are fab and should be much better known in the (predominantly all male) prog world!

Excellent! I really like Temple of Shibboleth. It sounds unlike any Canterbury Scene album I've ever heard before. It's daring and adventurous, just like a midnight swim at Michael Barrymore's house. ![]() ![]() |

TRAVELLING Tres Bon! We're on the road again with Travelling, one of three Gallic (or garlic-flavoured) Canterbury Scene bands, and if you're au fait with the Canterbury Scene, you'll already know the other two French bands are Ocarinah and Moving Gelatine Plates, but why is it that all of the best Canterbury Scene artists are from overseas!? Oh well, C'est La Vie, as we say in England. ![]() Learn how to speak Francais the easy way with French tuteur Alec Baldwin. Edited by Psychedelic Paul - November 25 2023 at 02:49 |

THE WINSTONS One of three Italian Canterbury Scene bands, alongside Homunculus Res and Picchio dal Pozzo, although you'd never guess The Winstons were Italian from their name or their music, when they sound as British as spaghetti bolognese and chips. ROBERT WYATT Robert Wyatt is to Canterbury Scene music what Steve Davis is to snooker: interesting but not particularly exciting.... Robert Wyatt was a founder member of Soft Machine and Matching Mole whose career as a band drummer hit Rock Bottom after a fall from a window in 1973 left him wheelchair-bound for life. That marked the start of Robert Wyatt's somewhat eccentric 40-year solo career though - with offbeat music that often strayed into cloud Cuckooland - up until announcing his retirement from the music business in 2014 when he stated, "I didn't want my music to go off." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - December 05 2023 at 09:38 |
