Hi,
It's impossible for me to list anything ... of 2K+ CD's and 1500 LP's ... there is way too much great music for me to say that I have a favorite cut from many albums ... and just the minute I find one, another shows up ... and I go nuts ... just recently I played Esperanto's Last Tango album, and that version of Eleanor Rigby is totally out of this world, and the track later "The Rape" is so excellent ... that you quickly forget many things that you have heard over 50 years of being with this stuff ... And I don't want to get into pee shooter contests about songs ... I usually listen to the albums, not just the songs, which makes it harder for me to select one thing out of the rest in the album!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Its delightful isn't it. (sorry included an 's' at the end that shouldn't be there) I need to listen to that album more. I love Red but struggle to connect with LTIA for some reason. In answer to another post that suggested that Cinema is not a deep cut, my thinking is that Yes are not reknowned for 'instrumentals', well not in the same way that ELP for instance are. It's the only track off 90125 that I really love. Maybe Hearts would have been a better choice (?) |

OK, here's a very weird one, specially for this site. Not quiet prog, I guess. Now, when I was at highschool I heard a little piece, very electronic, from a friend. It seems it was from an old vinyl or single from her mother. I liked it since then... now, it I thought she told me it was from Richard Clayderman... now, back then I didn't even know much from him (not that I know much more now, actually), but what little I might have looked from him certainly didn't sound like that... I was given a name, in spanish... but it happens its real name is in french. OK, when I finally found it, it happened to be called L'enfant et la Mer... I expect that little piece would count as a deep cut from his discography, but I really like that one (I still do, now that I heard it again), and though short, I guess it isn't totally out of place among things like Jeam Michel Jarre or other 70's electronic pieces. Now, sorry to bring up an artist like Clayderman here, I guess I might have caused a small glitch in the PA system.

Really interesting list! I'm familiar with "Fallen Angel,"(an absolutely majestic piece off Red) "Echoes," "The Song is Over,"(great selection, didn't expect to see the Who on this thread) and "Soapbox Opera,"(one of the most underrated Supertramp songs ever) but I actually don't know most of these. Just went and listened to a bunch off the songs off this list. Wow. "Galadriel," is beautiful, and Hackett's song "Take these Pearls" is an awesome ethereal piece. As someone who wasn't very familiar with Golden Earring I was caught off guard by the 2 9-minute epics on Moontan. I appreciate the knowledge.

Awesome Steely Dan reference. "Caves of Altamira" is an awesome track and definitely needs more appreciation in the prog community. "Discipline," is a favorite of mine as well.

Love to see "Book of Saturdays" getting love. Wetton's performance on this song coupled with Fripp's guitar work is just outstanding. Still one of my favorite KC solos of all time at the end of the song.

Different opinions about what a deep cut is. Someone mentioned Cinema by Yes. That won a grammy award for best instrumental so you could argue that isn't a deep cut either for that reason. Anyway, I know very well what a deep cut is. Maybe you don't. I listen to the deep tracks channel on Sirius XM regularly and so I obviously know what kind of things they play (and they play stuff more well known than KC). Also, I have listened to the reguar radio for over 40 years and rarely if ever heard any of the songs on my list on there including Epitaph but it qualifies anyway based on your statement of "less widely played" alone not to mention "played less than well known than the other songs on the album." I'm not going by pandora or internet radio because that's absurd imo. Anyway agree to disagree.

^No it's not really about different opinions. The thing is, you don't know what a deep cut means, so let me explain: A deep cut is a song that is less widely played and less well-known than other songs on the same album or by the same artist

RE my choice of Epitaph (I won't quote both posts for the sake of brevity):
Among prog fans no Epitaph isn't a deep cut but then you could say the same about "the great deceiver,""starless" and other King Crimson songs. The op wasn't clear about this but since this song has probably(or coud be) played on the deep tracks channel like I already stated it seemed like fair game to me. The title track to the first KC album and schizoid man are also deep tracks to most classic rock fans and in general but not to prog fans imo. But Epitaph being less known seemed like a better choice to me. Heck, I even talked to a guy old enough to know about KC but never even heard of them. But prog fans know a lot more than just Epitaph trust me. But again I'm going by the general rock audience and not prog fans (If I was doing the latter then I would certainly agree with the gripes about it not being a deep track). When I said "everything" I meant any random song by a prog band and they seem to only play the major prog bands and nothing too obscure (based on what I've seen). Anyway, we all have our opinions on this so really no sense in arguing about it and going around in circles. EODAFAIC.

"Pictures of a City" on Poseidon. I saw KC perform this live, it was remarkable....Jakko on vocals was very impressive, and Mel Collins, well....
Yeah, I know, "Schizoid Man Part 2," not as good as SM, etc. etc. This was the stage, 26 Sept 2014 in Chicago.... ![]() |

Pandora is very oddly formulaic in the sense that the more times you frequent their stations, the more of the same tracks you get played to you! For a progger, this is the opposite of what I'm looking for. If Pandora plays ''everything'', it's definitely not prog. And no, they do not have a DJ for that. If you mean Radio Radio, then you get mainstream, and that is certainly not ELP or Crimson. Prog stations tend to play the "standouts" for the most part - I'm sure on that part. I don't know anything about Sirius XM though

I'll play. Works I felt deserved more attention are: Yes - "Then" Rush - "Open Secrets" Kansas - "Apercu" Porcupine Tree - "A Smart Kid" Genesis - "The Lamia" Jethro Tull - "A Passion Play" Frank Zappa - "Zoot Allures" Pink Floyd - "Burning Bridges" Off the top of my head.

Absolutely. It's a top five pick for me, and Squire said it was some of his most inspired bass playing.

It's among King Crimson's three - or at least five most popular, easiest recognized and treasured songs. It's really one of Progressive Rock most iconic and "famous" songs of all time. This single is ranked no. 12 of all time on RYM (and 1. for 1976, when it was released). Epitaph is about as far from a deep cut you can get. ![]() |
