He's never mentioned Las Vegas, I'm not even sure that city has been a stop for him on past tours so not sure why you are bringing that up.
I suspect this idea of residency will probably only be in the UK and probably very close to home for him.

I agree with this... BIG TIME... The more hype, the less I care. There's a lot of music coming out right now that is wonderful and isn't saturating the internet.

^ My strategy is to, while complaining about the hype, keep that separated from enjoying the music.
BTW: The hype is reaching new heights of sillyness ... and what I find most interesting is that a lot of the hype is not created by SW or the label, but by the crowd. May I present to you, a reaction to the trailer to the pre-release of one of the tracks ![]() |

I think I would give that new track a 7/10. I think it could do with some better mixing. I feel like the bass should be louder; drums in the first half should be louder, second half just a nudge louder; the vocalizations could be a bit quieter in the mix; the keys solo is nice, but I feel it would have sounded better with a different keyboard (or VST or whatever he is using these days) - imagine what that solo would have sounded like on a Minimoog or an ARP (or the equivalent VST). The keyboard he chose is neat sounding, but it doesn't feel right for this song. It's not a bad song. It just seems like it needs more work. Sorry for being so pedantic. I sometimes like to pick things apart.

Good stuff.......As far as the audio mix, it's phuquing YouTube, listening thru phone or laptop and then the compression that YouTube does to files I'm not surprised. I'll await my LP version and I suspect it will sound pretty amazing as Steven Wilson usually creates a very pronounced low end mix, he knows low frequency is the heart of music. I think what you are honing in on is the fact/possibility that he has played all the instruments on this album, I'm not sure what he is playing as I've not seen a list of musicians on the album. I suspect all the keys, at least synth, are played by him as well guitars and bass......but we will see. I'm not the biggest fan of this, I much prefer a proper band rather than a one man gig. Take for example Insurgentes and Grace For Drowning, regardless of the different style of music as compared to last album The Future Bites, to me those earlier albums have a more robust sound and I think it's due to having a band rather than a one man show as well as the techno stuff feeding a much lighter sense of music prowess. I hang my pictures on the outside of my walls, rather than the inside of the walls.

I've been listening to it via Apple (''lossless'') although my Sonos speaker didn't like it and spat it back at me!

Just gave "Impossible Tightrope" a couple listens. Putting aside The Future Bites this is some of his best work in years and shows Wilson stretching his wings creatively in ways we haven't really seen him do in his music before. Granted, some of it is kinds of "conventional" prog that while common haven't been his bag previously (especially the wonderful sax work) but he and his backing musicians put an excellent and eclectic spin on it. Maybe The Harmony Codex will turn out to be a more modernist sibling to The Raven in that sense.
I'm certainly curious as to exactly who among the announced "guests" and/or backing musicians are playing where. Longtime associates Craig Blundell on drums and Adam Holzman on keys are in the mix, plus the drummers from Interpol and Kneebody. Jack Dangers is doing some keys as well. What and how much have they done? I can only assume that Blundell and Holzman likely contributed to "Impossible Tightrope". And who exactly laid down that sax?

I believe Theo Travis is the brass player for SW's work usually...

Good point. I did finally stumble upon a detailed list of who played on "Impossible Tightrope" and there are many, with Travis indeed doing brass. Holzman did contribute electric piano, but Nate Wood of Kneebody drummed instead of Blundell. There's also violinist Ben Coleman and three guitarists not counting Wilson: Nicko Tsonev, David Kollar (ambient guitar), and Lee Harris (psychedelic guitar). Wilson's contributions include bass, harp (!), Solina strings, Moog, ARP 2600, Cobalt 8, Rhodes, and Hammond organ.

Yea Ninet is the star of this one....Her vocals are striking. The song is just fine, I'm indifferent about it. SW should not do these videos where he is suppose to act out something.....Prog people don't do this well at all

It's strange because it isn't the style of music I gravitate to but of the three released so far, I like Rock Bottom better than the other two. I'm weird.

I like all three. I'm beginning to think that I'll enjoy the album more than its parts. That could happen if they complement each other nicely. I'm generally a big fan of contrasts, be it food, movies, visual art or music

Indeed. I did not mind the time when you saw very little of the members in PT and SW solo. At first I wondered if the video for Nowhere Now from TTB was a joke. He’s got some great music videos to his name, but they don’t feature himself. |
