For me the best late night album for unwinding to has always been Santana's 'Caravanserai' - can't really pick an individual song (except maybe 'Just in Time to See the Sun') as it's one of those albums that is way more that the sum of its constituent parts and really should only ever be listened to in its entirety.

I actually came here to mention listening to 'Caravanserai' for the first a few weeks ago and thought, "Wow" and never really checked out the discography because of some misinterpretation. I hope I can find something like that in this thread. Thanks!

Santana's output was reasonably prolific back in the day, but I'd certainly recommend you explore their first three albums. The 4th was of course Caravanserai, IMO their masterpiece. Their output after that can be a bit of a mixed bag, but I'd certainly also recommend 1977's Moon Flower (half studio and half live tracks). Then to really capture the spirit of their early live performances try 'Lotus' (1975) which was originally a triple vinyl release.

For me, relaxation requires silence. I can't use music, because relaxation means that I have to cut off external stimuli, otherwise I will experience sensory overload. For the same reason, I can not use music as a background noise; it just becomes a disturbance, and it makes me stressed. When I do listen to music, it is because I am in need of stimuli. I listen to it actively, and I usually don't do other things at the same time, because generally I can't concentrate on more than one thing. Sometimes I will listen to music before sleeping, but then I will put the record back in place and turn off the stereo, and then go to sleep. Edited by The Anders - August 27 2023 at 05:50 |

^ It's more or less the same for me. When I listen to music, I try to concentrate on it as much as I can.
I usually listen to music in the evening, before going to sleep, always with headphones. I sometimes (not often) might put on something as background sound for reading, only to drown out or mix with noises from neighbours or outside. It has to be something minimal, ambient and/or repetitive. I don't listen to music when I'm traveling. Not on the bus, bike or walk. I like to put on a CD when I'm driving, though. Or used to, until my car CD player stopped working.

Hi, I always thought that the "secret" to almost all of it was the "shutting off the internal dialogue" (as stated by Castaneda), but in a busy day and time as today is with so much TV and Computer, the idea of being able to shut off this internal dialogue is just that ... an idea! Thus, the relaxation and sleeping stuff that the OP is asking for will remain an idea ... and the reality is ... IT CAN'T BE AN IDEA ... or it won't happen. I would recommend starting out by finding a mediation workshop, or yoga workshop so you can learn to relax many parts of your body, firstly by breathing properly, and then taking it into the next place. It's crazy and bizarre to see music be suggested here that does not belong in the arena of mediation. Most of it is CREATING an image for you when what you need for relaxation and sleeping is to make sure there are no "images" so you can enter "the void" (for lack of better wording -- not to scare folks), where there is "nothing" which allows your body and mind the maximum relaxation likely possible. It takes, however, years to get to this point, so one day listening to Caravanserai, is not going to help! You have to get past the "ideas" of it all in the first place!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

When I need some music to help myself fall asleep, I play something really loud and busy sounding, so that the music masks most of the noises coming from my neighbours, busy street etc. It helps.
