70s. Woman on vocals. Sax (or any brass)... If no brass, maybe a violin or cello.. Or at least jazz chords. One of those random finds on YouTube. Glad to see it reviewed on here of course. Edited by MortSahlFan - August 01 2023 at 13:38 |

Someone (a rather well known figure in the prog community actually) taped me their first album a long time ago. I always thought they sounded like a female fronted Van der Graaf Generator. However, apparently not everyone agreed with my assessment.

I love both of those Catapilla albums, the artwork is fantastic too.

I recommend their album Dromology. It is more avant-garde than Catapilla; less relaxed, more neurotic, you may not be into it. But it certainly is a woman voice over jazzy brass chords. Edited by edefakiel - August 02 2023 at 05:14 |

There is only one Catapilla, I will tell you that. I find the vocals pretty annoying, at least on the first album. Try the following:
Affinity - s/t (1970). Beautiful vocals by Linda Hoyle, jazz influenced prog-rock with brass and string arrangements on few tracks. Room - Pre-Flight - female vocals, plenty of horns and violin. Stylistically, one of those albums hard to categorize, but definitely with jazzy feel. Tomorrow's Gift - s/t (1970) debut by German jazz-rock / fusion band with female vocals. The vocals are in English. Edited by enigmatic - August 02 2023 at 06:30 |

Thanks! I have to agree with the vocals... On the 2nd album (which is the first one I listened to) were more "sweeter", but on the first, it wasn't as soothing, and more rough. I love Linda Hoyle. I know Affinity ("Night Flight"), but I've listened to more Linda Hoyle. "Paper Tulips" might not be prog, but it's such a wonderful vocal, and a nice song to boot. |
