My personal tastes dictate that Allan is a terrible band leader but and outstanding sideman. I love his stuff with UK, Soft Machine, Gong, Ponty, & Bruford. I haven't found any solo work I like.

Not Prog, but, and some would say The Shagg's Philosophy of the World, but I love it and think it pretty good for such amateur kids, but this... Technically it's not bad maybe, but it's more that I think the messages are not good. The Brave by Tom MacDonald & Adam Calhoun from 2022 (maybe some here will love it). I despise the kind of right-wing redneck gun-loving, conspiracy "theory" Christian nationalism that this band is about.
For a Prog band even if it is not a Prog album, I guess ELP's In the Hot Seat ain't too hot would be seated at the bottom of a pile from which I actually listened. |

Mike Rutherford's Acting Very Strange is pretty bad at least partly because he sings on it and trust me he should have left it to someone else (like on his debut).

I agree in theory but in real life surely we expose ourselves to music that fail to please? I know I do. Most of the time I turn off unpleasing music after a couple of minutes. But sometime I feel I need to listen a little longer. I might have enjoyed earlier albums by the same artist, heard or seen that some band - like the awful New Trolls are supposed to be among the greats in classic italian prog. Maybe I suspect there's something I'm not getting - like I'm to blame and not the music, and that it only needs a little more time and listening patience etc... Could be several reasons.

If life is too short for listening to music you don't enjoy, don't join Prog teams at PA. I have listened to albums that don't appeal for various reasons, from being with friends who play them, more-so before for Prog Archives, to join in on discussions, and sometimes it's akin to the same fascination of watching a train wreck. And sometimes that that does not please me that much at first will pleasure me at a later time. Sometimes I will give music more of a chance than others in the hopes that it will open up in an appealing manner. I do find value in trying things that are outside of my wheelhouse. Sometimes it's enough that I appreciate the music even if I don't really enjoy it. And sometimes I want my ears to burn and bleed a bit. There's a fine line between pleasure and pain. Usually I do avoid listening to much unpleasing-to-me music. If I try playing an album and I find no value, then I tend to turn it off or sometimes get a more basic feel for it even if it does not feel good. |

yep I agree 'prog by numbers' although The Whirlwind is regarded as a modern symph masterpeice for some reason.

tbh its a a pretty amazing album for the time it was released when so much horrible AOR and plastic rock was around. Apparently the record company had little faith in it either and nearly dropped the band from its roster which confirms that it must have been good!

It doesn't have much relevance to the conditions that GNR were working under, and the expectations there, but 1987 was a good (as are all years I have music from) year of music for me with
Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun Swans - Children of God Art Zoyd - Berlin David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive Cardiacs - Big Ship John Zorn - Spillane Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses amongst others. |

I really like the first two and think they should have stuck at that, because after that it becomes more formulaic

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Tau - Ikona. A horrible cookie-cutter Christian hip-hop travesty.

Surprised to see these two mentioned as the worst. Operation Mindcrime bad? Queensryche have a few terrible albums, O:M is not one of them. While their decline started in the second half of the 90s, in the 2000s they became unlistenable. Getting rid of Geoff Tate saved the band, go figure...

Well it is the only Queensryche I own, I've tried multiple times with it but finally gave up. Understandably I'm not trying the rest of their catalog considering this is considered their masterpiece.

If you ever find yourself in the mood to give one more of his solo albums a try, I recommend 1996's None Too Soon. That one features no compositions by the man himself and probably comes the closest to straight-ahead jazz in terms of structure and timbre.
