To be honest, Paul, I'm suprised by your fondness of the Canterbury Scene, or, it could again be an example of that your tastes are more diverse than just being "conservative". I have to admit that Canterbury in general is too quirky for my tastes, and too little rocky. I like very much though the four albums I've listed here, which are The Soft Machine - The Soft Machine (1968)Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink (1971)Khan - Space Shanty (1972)Gong - Shamal (1975) |

I was pleasantly surprised too. I like all four of those albums you mentioned. I wasn't expecting to like the quirky music of Daevid Allen though, but Now is the Happiest Time of Your Life is a surprisingly good album.

But regarding the outer artwork of In the Land of Grey and Pink, I would prefer it was more grey and less pink, while I like much the artwork of Space Shanty - I have both as LPs. |

AMOEBA SPLIT Buenos Dias! Amoeba Split are a jazzy outfit from across the water in sunny Spain. Their two albums are split between "Dance of the Goodbyes", featuring a charming senorita on vocals, and "Second Split", which is entirely instrumental, so for me, there's really no split decision over which album is best. Hasta la vista, baby, as they say in Austria. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:28 |

ANTIQUE SEEKING NUNS A strangely-named band with even stranger album and song titles and for whom making quirky, off-kilter music is just a force of habit. Antique Seeking Nuns later morphed into Sangune Hum - a cryptic reference to one of the four Greek humours (or temperaments) in Greek proto-psychological theory, first hypothesized by Hippocrates, so there you go. In the meantime, I'm having a serving of Double Egg with Chips and Beans tonight, both in musical terms and gastronomic terms. What are you having? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:28 |

I personally prefer Antique Seeking Nuns over Sanguine Hum. Great band.

Joy of a Toy by Ayers is a wonderful gem......easily 4 stars for me......with Soft Machine and Caravan members playing on some of it.

I'm looking forward to listening to all of Caravan's albums again, including "The Album", and when it comes to the best Canterbury Scene music, Caravan trail behind no one.

On the subject of Antique Seeking Nuns, it's just Chips & Beans without the Double Eggs for dinner tonight.

I like going to antique malls, but I'm not a nun. I had eggs yesterday. I can't find a way to get cranberry juice to the moon.

![]() BIG HOGG A Scottish sextet who are a long way from Canterbury, but close to Hatfield, if you catch my drift. Why not go the whole Hogg and check out their entire discography, which shouldn't take long as there's only one of three albums currently available on You Tube. In the rich pageantry of Canterbury Scene music, this virtually unknown, smoking hot band should be up there with the big beasts. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:29 |

THE BOOT LAGOON A Canterbury Scene band who actually live within sight of the dreaming spires of Canterbury Cathedral, which makes a nice change. The Boot Lagoon are close to Hatfield in musical terms, if not geographically, so you wouldn't want to boot their eponymously-titled EP into the River Stour, although the plain beige EP cover doesn't exactly inspire interest. I'm sure they've made a big splash in Canterbury though, but the prospects for The Blue Lagoon are looking a bit murky in the rest of the country where they're virtually unknown outside of the progosphere. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:29 |

A-Z of Canterbury Scene Artists BRAINVILLE There are some bands who come along sounding like no band you've ever heard before and that's certainly the case with the wonky music of Brainville. They're listed here as Canterbury Scene, but this is more like Avant Prog and not to my tastes at all, although I know there are some progheads here who will love this kind of offbeat, experimental music - and if the off-kilter, slightly mad singer reminds you of Daevid Allen of Gong, that's because it is him. ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 05 2023 at 11:30 |
