The Whale
Nothing to do with large mammals that live in the sea but rather about a guy who teaches online and never leaves his apartment. You may be aware of the acclaim for Brendan Fraser's performance (well deserved) but for me this is about the whole cast who are tremendous. It's based on a play and so the action never leaves the room. Through his visitors we find out gradually about his life. Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio which further emphasies the claustrophobia. Very emotional. 8/10

John Wick Chapter 4
We watched this at the weekend. I'm not sure why exactly but I didn't like it as much as the previous 3 movies. Some of the fight scenes seemed a little clumsy in their execution and it was way, way too long. The overhead scenes in Paris were the best parts and was really like watching a computer game. Good but not great. Only 6/10

The Tape
Nice little low budget film set on the south Cornwall coast about a talented folk artist who has retreated from the music industry which she sees as controlling and against what she is trying to do. She just wants to write songs for herself and works as a cleaner to make ends meet. However encouraged by comments from friends then takes the big step of laying down a recording in her cottage. Not knowing what to do with it she then gives ''the tape'' to a recently acquired acquaintance who is on his own journey taking a break down in Cornwall from the stress of corporate life in London. Has some interesting commentary about the music industry and is extremely whimsical at times. I liked it, has charm and some truth. Worth checking out. 7/10

Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 3
We all really enjoyed this; a great ending to a great series of movies with a possibility of some spinoffs. A nice King Crimson/Adrian Belew reference in the post credit scenes too. Will Poulter - he was really impressive in the role of Warlock. 9/10

A Quiet Place Part II
Probably one of the better horror sequels of recent years. It ticks the important boxes - Show more of the creatures, good continuity and don't outstay your welcome. John Krasinski takes over the reins both writing and directing while standing back on the acting front and alllowing Emily Blunt to do her thing. 7/10

Asteroid City
Hmm. Normally I love odd, often thought-provoking, movies and mostly anything by David Lynch is right up my street. This movie, Asteroid City, is weird just for the sake of it. It's really style over substance here. It looks gorgeous but it's chaotic and the script (for what little it is) is weak, chunky and meaningless. The poor actors had nothing of any merit to work with. And the cast? Half of Hollywood seems to be here, but all are wasted in this meek effort. A really disappointing effort from Wes Anderson - it's really just pretentious twaddle. 2/10

Man the new Indiana Jones sucked but the new Mission Impossible, Dead Reckoning, Part One was AMAZING! I haven't been able to get it out of my mind since I saw it; I think it might have been the best action/spy film I've ever seen!

Interesting. I've only seen one Wes Anderson movie and kind of liked it but then its probably his most accessible one The Grand Budapest Hotel. Generally his films seems to divide opinion well enough!

A movie last night - Last Sentinel. An interesting idea where the world has flooded and there are only 2 land masses left who of course are at war with each other. In the middle of the ocean between these 2 areas is a Mausnell type Fort manned by 4 soldiers from one of the countries. Complete with a big artillery gun and a 20 megaton nuke the soldiers' 2 month tour continues as their replacements haven't turned up - then an empty ship appears. I really liked this and though it's quite slow the story was great. All the actors were top notch and it ended with a satisfactory conclusion. 8/10

Mission:Impossible-Dead Reckoning Pt. 1 Heavy on convolutions, plotting, and an eye toward 'Part 2' next summer, M:I 7 is good but not great. With visions of a cyber virus taking over the world we feel we've seen this story before (e.g. Avengers:Age of Ultron) and though the pace and stunts are good they don't outdo past M:I films. Outback 2020
Another one of those getting lost in the outback movies that seen to pop up every so often. This is based on a true story of 2 American childhood sweethearts who take a holiday in Aussie land. The bloke decides to propose marriage on the plane and the young lady declines so this is just the start of the holiday from hell. Not sure that director Mike Green adds a lot of original ideas and it didn't ever feel that tense or suspenseful really. Kept thinking these stupid people deserve what's coming to them. 4/10

Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 3 The Usual Cast 8/10 A fitting end to the trilogy. A few obvious plot points foreshadowed like, since forever, but a fun watch They even threw in a King Crimson / Adrien Belew reference for the music fans. The Flash Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton 5/10 I wish I could say better things about this DC pic, but it seemed a little like a mess to me. The story seems disjointed and some of the scenes are either un-necessary or poorly executed. James Gunn has his work cut out for him if he's going to turn the DC debacle around.

Last Night - The Flash I wasn't expecting much from this DC effort and I'm not a fan of Ezra Miller either, but the start actually showed some promise and there were some great and funny action scenes. Ezra Miller was actually OK and played the role perfectly. But like all these movies it quickly descended into a cliched mess. Something else that's really grating with these action movies is the length of the film - why do they make them so long with all that unnecessary filler? Keep them tight and improving the script would make a world of difference. The CGI looked poor too, they must have used an Amiga. 5/10
For a wet, Sunday afternoon at home we chose to watch Renfield - a comedy/horror with Nicholas Hoult as Renfield and Nicholas Cage as Dracula. It's worth a watch to kill 90 minutes on a miserable day like today. Cage hams it up tremendously as the Count and Hoult plays the meek-mannered Renfield to good effect. The story is a side-line to the horror theatrics and it's a blood soaked blast from start to finish (and thankfully short enough to not get dull). I enjoyed it - 7/10

Oppenheimer An elegant piece of movie-making from Chris Nolan with a focus mainly on the war years and the sociopolitical ramifications of the work and legacy of the physicist (though not a biography, it is loosely based on the 2005 book American Prometheus), Oppenheimer is an intimate closeup of the atom bomb period in New Mexico, the urgent tensions that caused it, and the human conditions it created. It is beautifully rendered by the whole cast including Gary Oldman as Truman, Robert Downey as crooked AEC Chair Lewis Strauss, and Matt Damon perfect as a hard-nosed American general. However, at three full hours and covering at least three different eras, a film like this must ensure each scene both engages and moves things forward, and that's not always the case here. A slicked-up version of Oppenheimer's personal life, little background info, and almost no Physics not already in the public conscience, we feel a bit underestimated as an audience and maybe even talked down to. ^ I'm sure the BBC reported this as being a 'Ridley Scott film' afew days ago when they were looking at its box office battle with Barbie. I could be going mad though. It is Nolan of course!
Apparently people have been going to theaters dressed in pink to watch Oppenheimer as they had earlier seen Barbie. Hilarious.
