No Exit 2022
I quite like a short thriller (ie about 90 minutes) and thought this might fit the bill. Has a strong beginning and end but I have the feeling that a lot was left on the cutting room floor in the middle. It's crucial that you create as much tension as possible in this kind of thing but this tries just a bit too hard to race to the finishing line. Not bad though but could have been better 6.5/10

65 with Adam Driver. An alien (who oddly looks human and speaks English) from 65 million years ago crash lands his spaceship on a dinosaur filled earth. Hmm, yeah right. Anyway Driver is great as always but with this outline the film should be exciting as he, and a cargo passenger recovered from stasis, attempt to get to their escape ship before the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs hits. But it's rather dull. Which is a shame really and a bit of a wasted opportunity. At least it's short - 5/10

Tetris 2023
The story about the famous video game. It was developed initially behind the iron curtain and this is about the Dutch entrepreneur Henk Rogers(played by Henk Rogers) attempt to gain commercial rights from under the nose of media tycoon Robert Maxwell (stunning portrayed under a mass of latex by Roger Allam). He travels to Moscow an encounters a Russia where communism is on the way out and the KGB are struggling to keep even their own agents under control. Its pretty barmy stuff but very entertaining. 7.5/10

Went to the theater for the first time in six years to see the Mario movie. It reaffirmed disinterest in modern cinema. Every film is the same god damn story rehashed over and over again. tbf, this one is a children's film, and it does a phenomenal job at being that, but as a 25 y/o adult... yeah not for me. Also, they used waaayy to much licensed music. I didn't go to the Mario movie to listen to AC/DC or ELO.
If it weren't for the performances from Jack Black and Charlie Day who absolutely added charm to the film and made it worth sitting through, I may have walked out. I genuinely found Jack Black's performance highly entertaining and his whole "jam" scene as Bowser was actually funny (although I rolled my eyes at the adults who laughed at every tiny joke in the film). If I were 3 y/o when this came out, as I was when Shrek came out, I'd probably have liked it just as much I did Shrek when I saw that one in theaters 22 years ago (which is a lot - I still remember the entire film from memory). But all things considered, Ilumination's visuals are stunning and the animation itself is great. Again, a great children's film but not for me. Maybe I should check out some of Jack Black's independent work... I just wish the plot were more original. Like I haven't seen the whole "underdog saves lifelong partner from certain doom, but he is an outsider and weak, in comes overpowered "strong" woman who becomes his immediate love interest and trains him to save the world, but then he dies, but not really, then he beats evil force in his home world " story a hundred times before. No I'm serious. It's just regurgitated garbage. I've just got to keep remembering it's a children's film so there's really only so much that can be done with the plot. But then again every film I've seen lately, the majority of which are not "children's" films have more or less this rehashed plot. So boring. Up next, 1982's Heavy Metal. I have one dose of edibles left. I'm gonna get baked and watch the thing. As Don Felder said once live: "If you can remember the movie, you weren't high enough." I'll take on that challenge Mr. Felder. Pr was or Joe Walsh who said that? Eh whatever. It's next :) Edited by bardberic - April 22 2023 at 01:23 |

A movie last night: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. 95% of the film takes place in a CGI world - the Quantum Realm - the visual effects are stunning and look glorious in 4K HDR. But that's where the good bits end unfortunately. It's just another weak MCU movie. The 4 main actors: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas whilst all great had no chance to shine as it's all about the effects. The story, what it is, is so shallow that a school kid could have come up with it. A shame really as this is supposed to be start of Phase 5 of the MCU, which doesn't give much confidence in what is to come. 4/10

Emily the Criminal The always compelling Aubrey Plaza as a desperate woman who turns to credit card fraud, eventually having a relationship with her Middle Eastern handler (Theo Rossi). Tight and gritty with a student-film feeling, Emily the Criminal hits many effective dramatic notes and succeeds at what it attempts to portray. |

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: Finally a D&D movie that the majority of fantasy movie lovers will/would at least appreciate. Big-budget, high entertainment value and of top quality. I liked it a lot. 8/10

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Quite dark and disturbing learning of Rocket's past. Special effects were good. Best part for me was when they were listening to music and Adam Warlok said he enjoyed Adrian Belew's solo work and his work in King Crimson.

Renfield Nick Hoult, Nick Cage (Comedy/Action/Horror) Dracula's familiar, Robert Montague Renfield, seeks help in breaking the toxic co-dependent relationship with his master. 7/10 Stupid & Funny with just enough unnessecary gore to keep a smile on my face for the full 90 minutes. Favourite part being that Nick Cage couldn't lock onto one accent for the whole movie. Recommended for a wet weekend day !

we recently watched "Gräns" (Swedish for "Border"), an interesting and weird 2018 movie by Iranian director Ali Abbasi. here the plot summary from Wikipedia: Tina works for the Swedish Customs Service and uses her heightened olfactory sense to detect contraband, as well as human emotions such as guilt and shame. She has a strongly Neanderthalic appearance and lives in a secluded house in the woods with Roland, a dog trainer. One day at the border, Tina sniffs out a memory card containing child pornography, and her superior asks her to help with the subsequent investigation. The next day, a strange man with facial features similar to Tina's appears at customs. His bag is revealed to contain maggots and a device that the man claims is a maggot incubator. Tina lets him pass, but he soon returns and volunteers to be strip searched. Tina is taken aback when she learns that the man has female genitalia and a large scar on his tailbone (remark by me: like she herself has; there is a scene in which she appears nude). The man introduces himself as Vore and states that he will be staying in a nearby hostel. Tina goes to a nursing home to see her father, who does not look like her. Upon being asked about the origin of her scar, Tina's father tells her she fell on something as a small child. She then visits the hostel where she finds Vore eating maggots off a tree. He gives her one, which she eats. Tina offers him a room in her guest house and he accepts. Tina brings him home. He tries to kiss her. Roland's suspicions are aroused. Tina accompanies the police when they search the apartment where the suspected pedophiles live, and detects a camera with footage of an infant being sexually abused. The police arrest the occupants, but cannot identify who is trafficking the infants. During a thunderstorm, Vore enters Tina's house, and the two of them huddle under a table, terrified by the lightning. They finally kiss. Tina later confesses that she has a chromosome deformity which makes it difficult to have sex and impossible to bear children. Vore tells her that it's not a deformity, and she should ignore what humans say about her. Tina is astonished as an erect penis emerges from her groin. The two make love, after which Vore tells Tina that she is a troll, just like he is, and that he is hoping to get in contact with a group of trolls who maintain a furtive existence in Finland. Tina is excited by her newfound identity and begins living more like a troll, finally mustering the courage to evict Roland. She notices that Vore has taped his refrigerator shut. Upon opening it, she finds a strange infant in a cardboard box. Vore tells Tina that the baby is a hiisi, an unfertilized troll embryo that will soon die. Vore plans to use the hiisi as a changeling, and is waiting to secretly replace a real human infant with the dying troll embryo. While one of the arrested pedophiles is being transferred, Vore stops the van and kills him. He tells Tina it was to prevent him from telling the police that it was he, Vore, who was trafficking human infants. He also confesses that the infant trafficking is part of a plot by trolls to get their revenge on humans for all the trolls that humans tortured in the 1970s. This disturbs Tina, who believes that past human mistreatment of trolls does not justify such vengeful acts. The next day, Tina's neighbors call for an ambulance because their baby is ailing. Unbeknownst to them, it is not their child, but a changeling. Realizing that Vore has followed through on his planned deception, Tina goes to the guest house. Vore and his belongings are gone, but he has left a note instructing Tina to meet him on the ferry. She finds him on the deck. She explains that her compassion towards humans doesn't mean she is one herself and that trolls are capable of compassion too. She signals to the police, who close in and handcuff Vore, but he manages to escape by jumping overboard. His body is not found. Tina's father finally tells her the truth about who she is: that he used to work as a caretaker at a psychiatric hospital where trolls were tortured and experimented on; that it was from there that he adopted Tina, whose original troll name was Reva, to raise as a human; and that her real troll parents are dead and that he knows where they are buried. Later, Tina drives to the old hospital and finds her parents' graves. A few months later, Tina finds a parcel on her porch. Inside is a troll infant and a postcard from Finland. Friede and I liked the movie a lot; it was right up our alley. the movie was given the "Un Certain Regard" award at the 2018 Cannes festival; it is an award given to movies with unusual styles and non-traditional stories seeking international recognition. we saw it with German synchronization; if you are curious you can watch it here: Edited by BaldJean - May 22 2023 at 16:33 |

The Infernal Machine 2022
Written and directed by Andrew Hunt and starring Guy Pearce, this is quite an intriguing arty kind of psychological thriller that would have been done infinitely better by David Lynch. I didn't hate it and the anti- Hollywood feelgood ending is a good thing. 7/10

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves - An enjoyable fantasy romp with Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. This must have been a blast to make and it shows with the actors attitudes. Some really funny moments lift it from the normal and enough adventure and thrills to distract from the obvious CGI. I really enjoyed it 8.5/10

The Wizard (1989 - USA): I would be a fan if I had the chance to watch this one back then. The main protagonist is a 9-year-old kid with exceptional gamer skills. (I was 8 years old when the movie was out and my skills also stand out as an arcade gamer.) Yet, this kid had had a very traumatic and sad loss (which I can't relaate to except for symphatising)... A very good and very American movie. The ending evoked great pathos in me. Manly tears were shed, my brothers & sisters. 8/10

Dark Star - John Carpenter's debut is rough around the edges but entertaining enough sci-fi comedy and partial spoof of Kubrick's 2001 (and maybe Dr.Strangelove as well).

It was also interesting to me that it featured an unwelcome aline guest, that weird balloon type creature. A few years later there another more succesful film about an unwelcome alien guest was released. Coincedence or not a certain Dan O'Bannon who collaborated with Carpenter on Dark Star wrote the screenplay for Alien!
