Is it self-plagiarising if I quote my own posts, or am I just being an oxymoron? No, don't answer that.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Curiosity finally got the better of me. I just had a brief listen to Metallica's St. Anger album but I rather wished I hadn't. It's one of the worst albums I've ever heard.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned that 'Love Beach' was a dreaded contractual obligation (although compare and contrast with Soft Machine's magnificent 'Second') and to my knowledge, none of it was played live (I am sure 'Canario' would have been a belter). I dismissed it on release - a friend bought it (much to the amusement of the punk community on the back seat of the school bus) and I didn't even bother to tape it. It has stood the test of time and Emerson seemed committed to the project (Lake and Palmer, less so). Unlike many of their contemporaries, apart from Henry Cow, ELP wisely split.

^ St Anger was kind of an obligation as well, or at least became one. They had initially announced a new album in 2001 and it all went downhill as Newsted left the band, James & Lars fought a little bit, James went to rehab and so on. That Some Kind of Monster documentary shows what a mess they were at that time. So i guess this is why the album feels rushed, well, at least to me. They should have taken more time, trim the fat, work on those songs a bit more.

The only post-Cliff Burton Metallica album I actually enjoyed. Hating it was the cool thing to do. They didn't make Load and Reloaderer with The Unforgivenable part 6, or whatever they were up to by then, so the rabble were pissed off. Pure jock rocker backlash. |

I think only the jock rockers enjoyed this . There are only 3 Unforgiven songs. Let's not exaggerate, people hate this because of the production, poor song-writing (awful lyrics, poor vocal performance from James, songs drag on for too long, rather repetitive), the snare... Unfortunately it's deserved here...

^That snare sound is the sound of the Hammer of the Gods. Too pure for mortal ears.
Anyway, the Load albums were quintessential 90's jock rock and Metallica was playing for the charts. St. Anger was garage metal, Almost outsider metal. Right down to the upsidedown trashcan snare. Don't get me wrong, it isn't a 5 star album by any stretch, but it's closer to the bands roots than anything after Puppets. |

I like songs on both Load & ReLoad, and i am no jock. I don't even think it's close to the roots. I remember back when it was released, it was advertised as closer to AJFA. What a lie!

The real continuation of AJFA came with "Death Magnetic" in 2008. Both albums have very similar track listing, style, and song writing techniques. (I would also consider both of these albums to be their most progressive)

I think it is quite possibly the most underrated album ever made lol It serves its purpose. I'd take St. Anger over anything Linkin Park or System of Down any f**king day.

Shame they done f**ked up with the engineering on that one... practically unlistenable in its original master. Contrary to popular opinion, the Guitar Hero version is not much better, I don't think - I mean it is that much better, but it's STILL hardly listenable. Also, Load and ReLoad I think are Metallica's absolute worst, most derivative, boring, and just skipworthy albums in their backlog. The only albums from them i have not listened to in full aside from their new release this year and Lulu, the former of which I have no interest in listening to, to be honest. I'll eventually get to Lulu.

Just because I find the album underrated doesn't mean I find it particularly good per se. My point is that many people seem to love Linkin Park and System of a Down, yet will trash St. Anger to oblivion. St. Anger is kind of that alternative/nu metal style that the other two play, which is why I made the comparison. I'd actually call it one of the best nu metal style albums, tbh - I'd pick St. Anger over Death Magnetic and - I'm about to ruffle a TON of feathers here - Rust in Peace by Megadeth, which I personally dislike. High enough standards for you? I'd still pick Metallica's 80s albums over St. Anger.

I don't understand all this nu metal stuff but what I know is that 'Love Beach' has the only recordings of Emerson on Fender Rhodes! And I am no jock - at least I don't think I am.

Anyway, since this is an epic bump, I'd have to admit that my opinion has changed. Currently, neither of those albums provide me with any entertainment. Not even ironically. Edited by Hrychu - November 30 2024 at 22:03 |
