Knock at the Cabin - The latest M. Night Shyamalan movie based on the book The Cabin At the End of the World by Paul Tremblay. From IMDb: "While vacationing, a girl and her parents are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse.". And really that's about it, nothing more. It's well acted and very tense in parts but ultimately unfulfilling. This is not M. Night Shyamalan's best work by a long way and nowhere near as good as his previous movie: Old. But it's the story telling that let's it down mostly, it's just not strong enough. It's short too so worth watch to fill an hour and a half but only 6/10 for me.

Luther: The Fallen Sun 2023

The return of Luther with a bigger budget courtesy of Netflix featuring some big set piece scenes that would never have happened in the TV series. Its enjoyable enough and retains the dark psychological edge that is the Luther 'brand' . Idris Elba is as good as ever and Andy Serkis plays deliciously nasty villain. Won't give anything away but there is sneaky nod to Elba's links to playing 007 at the end. Overall it's good for a lazy Friday night perched on the sofa with a beer or three. 7/10

John Wick Chapter 4 2023

My first outing to the cinema since the pandemic. At nearly 3 hours long my feeling is that it would likely outstay its welcome and it did. It's not bad though although Bill Skargaard, great as he is normally, makes a very poor villain and just not convincing as French man. A lot is set in Paris including an insane sequence around the Arc De Triomphe that just seem to go on forever. In fact the set pieces are very long as they have to fill the generous running time and clearly Keanu Reaves is not desperate to do any actual acting. That is filled ably by Ian McShane and some good supporting actors. For doing mostly what it says on the tin 7/10

Watched this last night. Spectacular to watch and hear, stunning visuals, amazing actions scenes, probably the best CGI ever in a movie - but it left me a bit cold. It's the same story as the first one with very little added. It is a movie to impress the senses, but has no heart. I felt no connection with the characters at all. If there are future movies, they'll be the same I imagine - maybe in a jungle or icy planes next time, but with the same premise - bad earth people being horrible to the locals to pillage their resources. It's way, way too long as well - which is why I watched this at home, taking breaks when needed. I couldn't imagine watching it in a cinema.

I had a feeling this one was gonna be a letdown.  Did you see the first three ?  I'm a big fan.

Yes I've seen all 3 and enjoyed the 3rd the most. 4th is not bad but really it's just about the action scenes. I don't hate that if the action is very entertaining, and mostly it was. I cannot imagine how many stuntmen/women were used , off the scale I imagine!

Boston Strangler 2023

Starring Keira Knightly, Carrie Coon and Chris Cooper this film is about the notorious crimes that were committed in the 60's and specifically the investigation carried out by a couple of female journalists. As the crimes were committed against women, the paper thought it would be a good gimmick to have 2 women lead on it. I found in interesting and it told me things I never knew. Decent time passer if you have Disney+ 7/10

The Fabelmans (Steven Spielberg, 2022)

Quite well received by many critics here (in France), but I must admit that I'm not that convinced by this film. There are some wonderful scenes in the film, but many seem to be extended to the bore... The story-line is great, the acting too, but it is much too long and worn out. Especially the high school part made me remind of some of those very mediocre teen movies of the 80s. It is not that bad, but sometimes not far from it. The film could become much more interesting with some severe trimming, in my opinion. Interesting film, because it is Spielberg, but one of his weaker films.

Inside - With Willem Dafoe as an art thief who gets trapped in a luxury apartment after a burglary goes wrong. It's like Castaway, but this time, erm, inside. It's a bit far-fetched and some of the things he does are odd decisions. The problem though is it's too long at 1hr45min; as despite Willem Dafoe being an excellent actor it's a big ask for anyone to carry a film alone. It goes a bit weird at the end too. I enjoyed it overall (my wife didn't) and I've thought about it a few times today. 7.5/10

Shazam! Fury of the Gods - The first movie was a surprising hit - a decent, funny watch. This sequel  on the other hand is complete garbage. How on earth can the makers get something so wrong? All they needed to do was keep it simple and employ the same writers. But no, we get this abomination instead and 2hr10mins of it too. It has no redeeming features whatsoever. Horrid 1/10

Hogar (The Occupant): Another twisty Spanish flick; they are really good at that. I don't find such movies exceptionally smart whatsoever, yet they are really entertaining. 8/10

A Simple Plan: Sam Raimi's movie from the year 1998. Fine. Masterful directing of him, as always (at least, in my opinion). Kinda too, even over-American for me, though. My American-addict-self had long been gone. 7/10

Held: Another American movie. From the year 2020. Well, perhaps any rating could be given to this one. It was virtually certain at an early(ish) point that mine was gonna be between 5 and 7. And in the end, it gets a 7.5/10. This means that I was pleasantly surprised! Zero cinematic merits worth praising, but it was pretty engaging. Some nice twists here and there too. It was rather flimsily nondramatic for some time, then it got intriguing and sick, and on and after, it went on like it began with a weak completion. The showdown part was even ridiculous, haha.

Don't Hang Up (2016): Mediocre in all manner of artistic standards, yet watchable and moderately fun flick from the UK. This was like, a couple of kids grew up watching some horror movies, and decided to make one themselves when they reached adulthood. The story was quite OK, yet cinematically speaking, this was underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, nothing seems amateurish here. It's just that, the execution was lacking ingenuity. 5/10

Re-watch. But it was just on TCM, so I was fortunate enough to have a kid explain the movie to me!


P.S. Just like the false (Sally Fields) "You really really like me", no one in this movie ever says, "We don't need no stinkin' badges" (the actual line is "We don't have to show you no stinkin' badges")

Alien Trespass (US/Canada - 2009): A great homage to the sci-fifties! Definitely a frivolous saturnalia for the fans of the sci-fi of the 50s. 8/10
