Hi Steve,
I did a cursory listen to Light Up by Solstice and and immediately liked it. Andy and the ensemble are more music focused on this disc, with less focus on Jess Holland's multi tracked near choir vocals, as on the last album Sia. A few songs are still incorporating some funky grooves but the rhythm section sounds much less stiff than they did on Sia also. An easy 4/5 album, but I wish Andy and co. would do some more extended jams on a few tracks, as I like to hear him shred a bit more as he did the album's excellent 10 minute coda titled "Bulbul Tarang." (Which I had to google as I thought it was something obscene. I's not.)

Fantastic to hear, Steve. I think they have come up with something very special in Light Up. I enjoyed Sia, but this is a step up.

This week's first new album review is from French outfit, Lazuli, with Onze. I think it is marvellous. You can read my thoughts on the album at https://lazland.org/album-reviews-2023/lazuli-onze11
The Video of the Week is the opening track from the same album - it is fun and reminiscent of Beatles glories of the 1960's. BTW, for those of you wondering why the Ale of the Week segment hasn't been updated for a wee while, there is an explanation. The landlord at my favourite local has taken a business decision which changes the regular cask ales on sale, concentrating on local brews but with less variety, excepting imminently at weekend's when we will have a regular guest ale, and it is these which will figure in this section of the website when it starts.

I must also say that I had never heard of Solstice until a week ago and they have been on constant rotation for me since. Andy Glass is a phenomenal guitarist - a combo of Satriaini and Pat Metheny in all the right ways. Thanks to all who are bringing them forward.
And I usually dislike neo-prog.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Thanks, Jay. Solstice are a great band - forget the "neo-prog" tag. They, alongside most bands here under that sub-genre, are so much more.

They're about as 'Neo' as Tangerine Dream... Folk-Symph would probably be nearer the mark?

Agreed re TD, lol ![]() There is folk in Solstice, symph, jazz, classic rock, new age, psych, just about as eclectic mix as it is possible to get. Note to PA gurus - that was not an application to have them moved to "eclectic", another sub-genre which is meaningless in the real world

I think what they did in the 80s and 90s is neo-prog, but later on, when they came back in 2010 or so they are like you say folk-symph. Not that it matters, good music anyway...

That's a good call... the first couple of albums were more of the Neo persuasion, hence their being put in that category. They are almost an entirely different band now, which highlights the problems with labels on this site... something we have discussed on many occasions before...

When a band's first album features a female singer that sounds exactly Jon Anderson of Yes, well, the neo tag seemed to fit at the time. Lol.

And also a passing resemblance to Sandy Denny! I remember someone saying they were a bit like Yes meets Fairport Convention... I think Nigel Mazlyn Jones had a lot to do with their early sound (as producer); he was using ovation guitars through loops and echoes, a bit new-agey.. I enjoyed them immensely when i saw them in the early 80's and i'm really enjoying what i'm hearing from them now

A bit of a bumper night tonight at www.lazland.org
We have reviews of RPWL's new album, Crime Scene, a very dark exposition of the criminal mind, and the new single by Peachy, Way Back Home, intriguingly described as "bubblegum prog". I have a live review of the Mike Oldfield 50th Anniversary Tour of Tubular Bells. Finally, the Video of the Week is a RPWL taster, Light of the World live. All links are on the Homepage. Enjoy!

Hi Steve,
I've been meaning to ask you if you've heard any news about future releases of the Edison Children's material and if you know how Erik Blackwood is doing these days?

Hi Steve. No, absolutely nothing regarding any new material. Rick Armstrong released his own material last year, but that is all from the Children camp as far as I am aware. Pete has had AHBID and the eeekends with the day job, so it may well be that he will do some other projects such as EC when that is all done, especially now Transatlantic has been wound up. As far as I am aware, no change re Eric.

Tonight, I present a review of the new Overhead album, Telepathic Minds - extremely ambitious and impressive.
Video of the Week is the second release from Built for the Future's forthcoming epic, 2084, which I think will have you all really looking forward to the full album. And, Ale of the Week makes a welcome return! All can be viewed by going to www.lazland.org and clicking on the relevant link. Lazland - you get exclusive content! You don't have to view any bloody annoying pop-up adverts! You get to read about the best of new and classic music! You get wider cultural stuff as well! Not been over? Well, shame on you! Get your arse over there now, lovely people!!

I really enjoyed the Lazland 2022 Awards , Steve. Very interesting and enjoyable. Especially the "Spoken Word" Award for Tull/Anderson. Very cheeky and very funny!
