Usually when band members "go mad", they also step out of the limelight... Syd Barrett, Peter Green... [not that I think they really went mad]... RW, unfortunately didn't - and personally I've always felt he was trying to top The Wall in everything he wrote since, refusing to accept that it was never going to happen. That said, he's undoubtedly a fine musician... but when are people going to learn that politics and music really don't mix?

Ahhhh, do you remember the 60's and how many artists grew out of throwing the bird to that very idea??

I don't know if he's crazy, but he's certainly a bitter old man at this point. And I don't really care what an entertainer's opinions on world politics given that there is no reason to think he would have anything more to say than an electrician would have to say about heart surgery. I have political opinions too - guess what, no one cares!
To think that anyone wants to hear him re-record DSotM is also just pure spite and arrogance.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

OK here's the thing: let's not get politics (i.e. the game that politicians play) and protest and/or social commentary mixed up... Interestingly, many songs were written, say, on the subject of the Vietnam war, but very few actually mentioned 'Nam itself (Country Joe & The Fish being among the notable exceptions), the artistry being mainly in allegory and allusion. But really all that is beside my point, actually getting involved in political activity, or i suppose in RW's case maybe you could say it's "diplomatic" activity, (although he's hardly being diplomatic) just seems to me to be a waste of talent. People who have a gift for music should use that gift to express their ideas and maybe inspire others who have a gift for politics, diplomacy or whatever to exercise their "talents" in a different way.
I think the 60s song-writers and musicians were flipping the bird to the idea that they should leave their political and/or social views out of their music and keep it "sanitized", and the world would be a much poorer place had they not flipped that bird. But, I was just really making the observation that whenever musicians attempt to engage in actual politics, things do not go well.

I'm sure there is some interview footage around that would show all kinds of musicians expressing their political views in varying degrees. I think if RW were being as vocal on the side of Ukraine and favouring the west's position, then people would be lining up to carry him on their shoulders. But because he takes an unpopular position, that means he can't speak out? No, I can't support that. He has every right to make a fool of himself. But to be fair, it's hardly restricted to musicians. Feel free to lump any one of a hundred professions into that statement. Can anyone say Piers Morgan?

I must say, I was blissfully unaware of Waters' recent activity until I saw this thread. Having read up a bit, I did wonder if maybe the thing that sparked him to take a stand on this issue was Gilmour's very visible support of Ukraine, but probably there's more to it than that... seems to have turned into a good old slanging match after that with Gilmour's wife's Twitter diatribe. Anyway, I totally agree that he has the right to say whatever he feels, and looking back at my earlier comment, I didn't mean he'd "gone mad" because of the views he's expressed of late, I think he's been a bit bonkers for a while, but maybe that's just genius at play! Anyway... I guess it's just my delicate sensibilities that make me feel like I wish musical artists could keep it about the music, like when everybody and their dog seemed to feel like they had to make some comment about Trump, before during and after every gig or TV appearance. I prefer music to be about transcending the media fuelled puppet show, but I'm probably just an idealist. Of course there are real issues in the world that should be addressed, and if they are to be addressed by musicians, than that's what they'll do, I've no right to expect them not to, but I don't have to listen either.

As much as I admire Roger's writing and concept skills whilst he was with PF and to a lesser extent through his somewhat uneven solo career, he really has become a cantankerous ranting old git. My final words on the matter.

Hi,
I find this really sad and a comment that makes me think that all musicians are a bunch of idiots and shouldn't be commenting on politics.
They have that right, however, they also need to remember to take the heat.
But saying that musicians and politics do not mix? I would suggest that this person needs to study the history of music a little more. It might not be visible in classical music, but in rock music, and specially folk music, it has been around a long time, and it has been a very important part of helping a lot of things get known and seen by the public.
There are musicians out there that have PHD's and other accreditations, and they are not stupid, and their opinions are as valid as anyone else, although I would be wary of an internet that loves to throw stones, at anything including chickens and ducks!

This is a massive stain on the reputation of Floyd. It sucks that Roger would also ruin all possible chances of a reunion after the beef with Polly Samson (Although that chance was already astronomically low).

^ Someone tell him Covid seclusion is over he can record all together in the studio...The typed message we could have done without.
A song probably meant for the Final Cut....
I think the typed message at the beginning of the video is for the benefit of those of us who don't know what Two Suns in the Sunset is all about. Like me, for instance, up until today.
