There are plenty of musicians whom have done alot for the music buiz whom, in your opinion, does not gather the amount of attention as you would like, out of personal preferance.
To many it can be James Jamerson, or some might highlight Richard Carpenter, or some might even say Ant Phillips, the unsung hero of Genesis. To me it will almost always circle back to the co-founding brain behind Toto, David Paich. The main songwrighter whom compared to Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro are the most important factors of one of my favourite bands. David is not a shy person but compared to the legendary status of Jeff and Steve Lukather boundery breaking guitar. David falls in an undeserved shadow. Though he have contributed alot in terms of arangements to music the last 45 years. Even Olympic games. Hes the core factor of the Dune soundtrack, he also released hes first solo album in 2022. Very good album. Although he sings lead on Africa which have 1 billion plays on spotify. Nobody but muso heads are aware of that David Paich sings the lead. Hes my favourite person in Toto in whole. Although not completely overloooked, my favorite guitarist, Terje Rypdal for sure.
- Co-founder of Mr. Bungle Trey Spurance's project that is Secret Chiefs 3 has been creating the most vibrant, creative and unique progressive music for almost 30 years. But very few knows about it. - + Composer, orchestrator, music director, conductor, violinist, pianist, percussionist.... etc... Egisto Macchi (just like Morricone, a lot of what he created could easily fit in Avant Prog). I got about 20 totally obscure albums of his. All pure gold. - -and Robbie Basho?
Isn't he sort of prog folk btw? Why listen to John Fahey (he's ok
really) when you can listen to this far more interesting "american
primitivist" - and his one of a kind voice? - oh and jazz pianist Mal Waldron
man! Always, always intriguing, profound, deep and honest. All his
1970's albums are total gems, but I'm the only one who knows. - ...and
while I'm at it... jazz folks are generally overlooked so: Charles
Tolliver, Lloyd McNeill, Paul Bley, Bobbi Humphrey, Barre Philips,
Herbie Mann, Henri Texier (well he's not just jazz, but...),
I'm quite the fan of all three, but I don't know how unsung I consider Minnie and Isaac. I guess they both deserved more anyway while they were alive, so why not. Edited by Saperlipopette! - March 07 2023 at 08:00 |

^ I think Minnie Riperton could be considered "unsung" mainly because her early years with Rotary Connection went largely unrecognised at the time and it was only after the release of her hit solo single "Loving You" that she became a household name. After all, I never even knew Rotary Connection existed before going online back in 2010, but I could say the same thing about literally thousands of other artists and bands I've discovered since then.

For me, definitely, it would be the late Helmut Koellen of Triumvirat. He is hardly ever spoken of, around PA, or elsewhere, and he should be, for he was one of the main reasons Triumvirat garnered the attention they did. A great musician/singer/songwriter, he did not even know the English language at first when he joined Triumvirat, and as new lead vocalist in 1973, had to learn the lyrics to their songs phonetically, which must have been a real challenge. And to be a multi-instrumentalist on top of that, playing bass and 6 and 12 string guitar. Amazing! Sadly, he joined "the 27 club" and died at that age way back in 1977. His lovely solo album You Won't See Me was released posthumously in 1977, but has never seen the light of day on cd, which it really should.
Another "unsung hero" of mine, I must mention, is the late Eddy Marron, who was never given his just do as an important and striking guitarist in the jazz rock fusion realm. Always in the shadow of more renowned figures like John McLaughlin, he nonetheless, made a series of impressive recordings with Vita Nova, Dzyan, Missus Beastly, Giger Lenz Marron, and Hans Koller's Free Sound, and finally a solo album from 1980. Relegated to a pretty obscure status, and having passed on in 2013, he was also a Professor of Jazz Guitar and wrote an important musician's handbook "The Rhythmic Teaching". Mike Keneally. All his albums on PA have a dismal amount of reviews/ratings. He is a critically overlooked multi-talented artist. His compositions are eclectic and playful. Side projects he contributed to have included... Zappa, Vai, Satch, Devin Townsend, and others. He is in my top ten guitarists of all time list, and he's a killer keyboard player also.
Here is a track from his new album. Another tune... |
