How are you doing, Funky Paul?
And curiously enough, you're talking here about "modest CD Jazz collection", as I've been thinking about a couple of threads both concerning my CD and the entire Jazz collection, and both of the latter ones are truly modest. Tongue

Good Mornin'. I've been Breakin' Away from prog for awhile and doing a spot of Moonlighting on the side to complete Al Jarreau's long discography, which reminds me, I'll have some Dukey Treats coming up here later. In fact, Al Jarreau & George Duke sound So Good together that it's surely a match made in Smooth Jazz-Funk Heaven. Cool

^ I'm glad you mentioned Al Jarreau. You just reminded me that I have 110 Soul-Jazz artists to add to the listings, including Al Jarreau. I'll probably have to do some Moonlighting to find the time to add them all though. Smile

A-Z Playlist of Smooth Jazz, Jazz-Funk & Jazz Fusion

Starting with guitar legend Allan Holdsworth (1946-2017). He's played with some of the biggest names in Jazz Rock/Fusion, most notably Soft Machine, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, short-lived supergroup U.K. & last but least 'Igginbottom (Who?) amongst many others. Allan Holdsworth has his own distinctive and instantly recognisable guitar style, which includes a vast array of complex chord progressions, such as diminished, augmented, chromatic and altered scales - and if that makes any sense at all to you, then you know far more about music theory than I do. As you can probably gather from my low ratings*, the appeal of Jazz Fusion to me is diminished, just like some of Allan Holdsworth's chord progressions. Tongue

2 stars 1980: Allan Holdsworth, Gordon Beck, Jeff Clyne & John Stevens - Conversation Piece - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAcusrW39X4
2 stars 1980: Alan Holdsworth & Gordon Beck - The Things You See - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nkQRYCtGIbYlg5t9B9QiMASamGEmQA3d0
3 stars 1984: Allan Holdsworth - I.O.U.: Live in Japan - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nc1vpSnTDbywaByEA6yublcAzJhqaZfx8
2 stars 1988: Allan Holdsworth & Gordon Beck - With a Heart in My Song - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nP2jaGQ47Fk8f9uW2jtF5VOejs_0JLH1A
3 stars 1996: Allan Holdsworth, Anders Johansson & Jens Johansson - Heavy Machinery - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_n0phkLD1hW_-sR60Z92ha_s3VHX7NtNHA
2 stars 1999: Allan Holdsworth - The Sixteen Men of Tain - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kC7Fs-HuK8mPBWO7LCharCVGOXTRO6yPE
2 stars 2003: Allan Holdsworth Group - Live - Then! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx8GeqYjvZA

* With apologies to Grumpy for the low ratings. Wink

With the incredible compilation you've put together, it's easy for readers (like me) to miss a few.  So, I apologize if I missed this one.  The great jazz flutist Hubert Laws brother Ronnie Laws has several fine jazz-funk releasees of his own worth a listen.

thank you Paul.  it was seeing Gabor Szabo on your list that made me look to see if you had posted Gary McFarland.  a musician friend & listener of SPACE PIRATE RADIO introduced me to Gary's AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL concept album.  very kindly sent me a CD copy when the show began broadcasting on Twitch.  became a fan of Gary's from then on.  was surprised I had never come across his work previously, especially since I played Gabor's music in the mid 70s.  I had heard the soundtrack to SLAVES, the Stephen Boyd, Dionne Warwick film, but the name didn't register.  glad that's all sorted out now.  best to you.

My pleasure. I'm now torn between which featured artist to choose for the letter "G" in my first A-Z playlist of Jazz favourites: either Gary McFarland or Gabor Szabo. Ermm
