I guess we'll have to wait awhile longer for a Danish prog thread then.

It's always good to bounce ideas off one another, just like a Ricochet, which is coming up next,

^ Well, Tangerine Dream's early trio of spacey ambient albums still sound dark, brooding and menacing to my ears, despite you trying to convince me otherwise.

Hi, Paul ... you are talking about "conditioning", not listening. And this can be easily proved with a good actor given one line with 3 words, and he/she can say it in a hundred different ways stretching the realms of possibility in how it comes out. The same for most music, but somehow, because it isn't "conventional" or "something we have heard before", it automatically becomes dark, and ... other definitions. Most "ambient" music is not about "dark". Most is about illustrating feelings, some which we might consider dark, but we might as well consider the early navigators "dark" and "insane" because they were taking their ships into places that "didn't exist" and the earth was flat!!!!!!! You hear a lot of music ... your horizons should not be comparing anything ... they should continue expanding, if I may say so.
|
||||
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Although Rubycon didn't quite make it into my Tangerine Dream Top 7, it's still a very worthy 4-carat gem for me and it's coming up here next.

I've began to give Rubycon new listenings, and that looks good. And Paul, it suprises me a bit that you, being so fond of Stratosfear, don't seem to be that crazy about Rubycon. |

Edgar Froese (1944-2015) - the founder and only continuous member of Tangerine Dream - also embarked on a long and illustrious solo career in the same year as the release of the breakthrough Phaedra album, so for those Tangerine Dream fans who want to delve into Edgar's solo discography too, here's the full albums rundown.....
1974: Edgar Froese - Aqua - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNWF50faO0s 1975: Edgar Froese - Epsilon in Malaysian Pale - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPeW7KNEPSw 1976: Edgar Froese - Macula Transfer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4Y6FCwrhcg 1978: Edgar Froese - Ages - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lYtEzoX-ME7ZCeCADHQZf-aW4gtxoWJAw 1979: Edgar Froese - Stuntman - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ka_EkKKONP1n6WwzXGp-6QOF0ltpJzAm8 1982: Edgar Froese - Kamikaze 1989 (soundtrack) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK8VGzih6aw&t=2073s 1983: Edgar Froese - Pinnacles - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lc6qD-5IvGoLo8RKidvHRSgOzTXtx4_Ck 2005: Edgar Froese - Dalinetopia - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kNGA9IdQ813kJB2jTQOpuwfB6RA__oAiU Stuntman - which I haven't heard for Ages - was one of the Pinnacles of Edgar Froese's solo career, so maybe now's as good a time as any to give these fine albums another listen too.

1974: Phaedra - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIQ0dd7B_FU
Phaedra: the fifth Tangerine Dream album overall and their first album released on Richard Branson's Virgin label. Phaedra is Tangerine Dream's real breakthrough album, reaching #15 in the UK album charts, despite minimal promotion and hardly any radio airplay. The album marks the beginning of their classic sequencer-driven sound and was a major influence in the emerging "Berlin School" of German electronica. Phaedra continues with the tradition of featuring the title track on one full side of the album with shorter pieces of music on the reverse side. Regarded as a classic by Tangerine Dream fans, Phaedra fared much better in England than in the band's native Germany, where it sank like a lead zeppelin and barely sold 6,000 copies. The classic Tangerine Dream trio of Chris Franke (left), Edgar Froese (centre) & Peter Baumann (right). |

Yes, that's exactly right and thanks for explaining it better than I did. I think of the psychedelic freak-out of Electronic Meditation as being separate from the unofficial "dark ambient" trilogy of Alpha Centauri, Zeit & Atem.

Phaedra through Ricochet remains my TD sweet spot, but I enjoy the 2-3 albums in either direction on their timeline. Those high school stoney evenings with the Stratosfear vinyl still warm my soul.

Thanks for throwing some Underwater Sunlight on the subject of ambient music that sounds "dark" and foreboding to me, but doesn't necessarily sound dark to someone else's ears.

Paul is referring to Alpha Centauri, Zeit and Atem as its own (unofficial) trilogy. I look at the first three as doing their own thing, and with Atem the "classic" sound begins to emerge.
