KRAAN: a good name for a breakfast cereal and also a good name for a Krautrock band. Kraan were founded in the city of Ulm: famous for having the tallest cathedral spire in the world, although Ulm Minster is not really a cathedral as such - it's a church, as there are no bishops moving diagonally down the aisles.

Yes indeed, and they're a very good Krautrock/Jazz-Rock/Fusion band too. I'm looking forward to hearing Kraan's later albums if they're all as good as the debut.

Kraan is included in PA under Jazz Rock/ Fusion but that doesn't mean that it cannot also be considered Krautrock. We have the limitation at PA of only having bands in one category (many bands could fall into various categories) and of not labeling by the album. That and PA's labeling is not the be all and end all, and actually bands get moved sometimes and people are fallible. Sometimes we figure that its better to add things than worry that much about best fit p- but Kraan definitely fits both Krautrock and jazz-rock to me.
I have Kraan's early albums and consider them to be Krautrock and Jazz-Rock, and I would call, say, the debut Krautrock. I do think that we at PA sometimes obsess too much about putting things in neat little boxes where those things cross boxes and fall into many boxes -- that's what prog commonly does. Sometimes I think I got too old for this site. |

^ I believe Kraan fit better as JRF than Krautrock, so PA got it right this time.

^ I'm not implying they got it wrong. I think it fits both well enough (and it rather depends on the album) and I am confident that if we had multi genre labeling then both Jazz-Rock and Krautrock would be listed. Krautrock and jazz-rock are two of my favourite categories. I don't see the issue in adding it to a Krautrock list. I did a big Krautrock poll and adding Kraan to it for the debut with no complaint as I recall. I have also mentioned Kraan in jazz-rock topics. Lots of good jazzy Krautrock.
Whether it fits better or not to me is not a powerful argument for it not fitting a Krautrock list. Pleased to know that you are familiar with Kraan albums, though, and appreciation is more important than the boxes to me in this case. I really like the first three albums. |

I was going to say basically the same as Logan so eloquently stated, where bands are not strictly defined by one particular genre. For instance, a Krautrock band can also be a Jazz/Rock Fusion band and vice versa, so there's no right or wrong when it comes to music genres.

"there's no right and wrong when it comes to music genres"? Wow, really? Well considering you don't care at all (to put it gently) about genres and subgenres, I'm not surprised you said that. Let me rephrase, when I say Kraan is a better fit for JRF than Krautrock, I mean they are a JRF band, this description or label fits them better than anything else. Some bands could have several labels, that's true, but to me Kraan is not one of them. I would not put them in a Krautrock list, that's why I objected to seeing them here. Next time I will stay quiet, you do not value my opinion anyway.
