This is not a sub-genre I have much interest or tolerance for. Never have, probably never will. I just get so bored with those long jamming-style songs and their unresolved tensions and overly-long expositions. While I might like something I'm hearing, it is highly unlikely that I'd ever go back to it … of my own volition. Therefore, and not surprisingly, I literally have no bands or albums to contribute to this thread--the only psych/space albums in my All-time Top 600 albums list are:
Everyone Into Position by Oceansize, (but are they really Psych/Space?) Technicians of the Sacred and Jurassic Shift by Ozric Tentacles, Kingston Wall III, Vespero's By the Waters of Tomorrow and The Four Zaos, (aren't they more Krautrock?) I Wash My Soul in the Waters of Infinity by My Brother the Wind, and Nektar's Journey to the Center of the Eye, A Tab in the Ocean, Remember the Future, and Recycled. (The two Pink Floyd albums in my Top 600 are not what I'd consider "psych/space" music: Dark Side of the Moon and Animals and 2020's debut from Magick Brother and Mystic Sister I consider belonging to the Canterbury Scene.) |

Well, we have all our non-favourite sub-genres, and this one looks in general to be one of the less popular among the active PA members.

So far, I've barely explored the intergalactic neighbourhood of Space Rock. I'm still on the letter "A" at the moment.

I think some Krautrock albums are definitely in this vein too, so I will include them. Amon Düül II - Tanz der Lemminge Christian Boulé - Photo Musik (yes, with a "k") Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time Nik Turner - Xitintoday Gong - You. actually the whole hexalogy (not trilogy) - Flying Teapot, Angels Egg, You, Shapeshifter, Zero to Infinity and 2032 - is excellent Brainticket - Cottonwoodhill Steve Hillage - Green. my favorite Hillage album Guru Guru - Känguru Space Explosion - Space Explosion Between - And the Waters Opened Orange Peel - Orange Peel Jane - Between Heaven and Hell Eloy - Inside Pink Floyd - Meddle Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass I could name many more; it is one of my favorite genres. many so-called "proto prog" albums are in that vein too, and we have quite a collection of psychedelic albums from the 60s. I didn't name any of them because many are not listed in the archives, and I am not in the mood of finding out which ones are in it

Hi,
I wish I could list stuff in this thread, but I can't. For me a lot of this music is not just stone eyed crazy stuff that we listen to when we're high. Almost all the material listed here was already "post drug" days, which were not that many for me, although I had my share, but AD2 was not "psychedelic" for me, anymore than Bob Dylan. I think the "translation" of the wording is what made it tough and weird, and the band took advantage of it. But in the middle of it the music was serious, thought out and played well. Weird for me, that folks think of Hawkwind as stoned stuff, specially as one member went on about it, and helped put together 2 great pieces to discuss it in one album ... "Reefer Madness" and "Steppenwolf" ... both pretty much about the same thing as here, but in words that made it look like the dope changed things for us, when it was our minds that could not understand what it saw and what was in front of us. Almost all of the stuff listed is not psychedelic for me, and that was one drug I enjoyed a lot, and listened to a lot of music on it, but I can tell you that a lot of the music did not sound better on it ... in fact, many bands sounded way worse. But, from a thinking perception, many of those bands made sense, and sometimes I think we're making fun of that sense. Which for me, is bizarre. There are few albums that are (likely) truly psychedelic ... the ability to put those albums together can not be done in that state, and organize all the elements within it, and it did not take long for many bands to realize that! Even the Beatles. "Space" this and that was misleading, mostly because of its title, not because of its idealism, and to me that is cheating. The only "space prog" is the one that lives inside your head, and is not real yet, because you have not brought it down to reality!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
