Never really got into Headhunters and much prefer Herbie's Mwandishi sextet. So Abraxas for me

I would absolutely qualify Abraxis as fusion; I think PA itself classifies it at jazz/fusion?

PA classifies by the artist, not the album, and I think Santana was mostly included for Caravanserai which is much more of a PA JRF-worthy album than Abraxas, I think. Edited by Logan - October 04 2021 at 12:20 |

There's no con-fusion here. It's Santana's Abraxas all the way for me in this poll, and probably any other poll too.

Both are classics (though Abraxas is more rock and Head Hunters is more funk); can't choose.

Thrust and Man Child are my two favorite HH entries. I put Abraxis in here solely to make PA argue about it lol.

Abraxas on these 2........Hancock's earlier jazz infused work especially Maiden Voyage and Speak Like A Child (and later 'trilogy') are far better than Headhunters funk style imho.

I've often thought that such arguments are the lifeblood of the PA forum, which is kind of sad in a way as I don't find it really important or terribly interesting, and it can now feel more like habit. Santana's suitability has often been questioned, and my stock answer is "think Caravanserai". Of course Hancock's suitability has oft been questioned, who which I say, think Mwandishi trilogy (Sextant and Crossings particularly). I had intended to mention Man Child too. I have all of Hancock's albums from Inventions & Dimensions to Man Child.
