Well I'm mostly steeped in the symphonic / eclectic / space-psyche aspects of prog... which is reflected in my Twitter handle (in my profile).

Hard rock with progressive tendencies, is my assessment of Rush.

I don't wish to create Permanent Waves, but Rush have always been a Hard Rock band to my ears, throughout the Different Stages of their long career. Hold Your Fire though, because Hey Presto, all the Signals indicate that Rush are a Progressive Rock band too. My guess is that Rush and their Canadian Counterparts are likely to still have a strong following in 2112, if the Snakes & Arrows of outrageous fortune are still on their side. Maybe we should have a poll and then we can have A Show of Hands, although there's no Rush. It's time now for me to Exit... Stage Left.

you should listen to Tony Banks's album from 1983. You might stop blaming Phil for the poppy sound.

Being generous with 1983. Duke barely makes it and that's 1980. Unless people think that maybe 1 out 4 or 5 songs on an album is sufficient to be prog or anything with keyboards and synth included is Prog?

Not so fast partner. This begs the question: were Genesis still prog after 1983? Discuss.

![]() However, I must admit that Run the Jewels is pretty badass, probably the only rap that does something to me! Definitely a stand-out act in my book.

..and well in this thread it is quite easy to laugh at...but when it continues to happen in other more serious topics, it pisses me off. Just take a look at the ‘Jerusalem thread’ ![]() |

Wait, you mean humans default to making massively drastic assumptions via small sets of data, then project that as a hard-and-fast rule of everything?! Lol. I agree!

How would one categorise Genesis if one had only listened to their more popular stuff from the 80s?
How would one categorise Yes if one had only heard the debut? How would one categorise Kraftwerk if one had only listened to the first couple of albums? It reminds me of the folks that tear rap and hip hop a new one every time there’s even a mention..no matter what artist, track or instrumentation behind..because well it’s rap and they once heard half a track over the radio...just like fans of pop once heard the middle bit of Roundabout and subsequently deem all prog equal to that. |

Hello guys! I've been a huge fan since the release of their first album. I was a kid and a fan of hard-rock back then (all kids were) and hence instantly became a Rush fan as soon as I listened to the self-titled debut. Definitely, their style was pretty complex, but it was a zeitgeist and the music of many hard-rock bands of that time was complex. Rush were heavy, too heavy to be considered as a Prog Rock band at the time. ![]() ![]() Edited by rushfan9 - May 19 2021 at 02:01 |
