I can only go by my feelings at the time. The Wake meant everything to me , I really can't express in words how important that album was to me so Nomzamo was a horrible thing to me. It's eighties 'tinny' production was like U2 meets Dires Straits and I hated both bands! Nowadays I don't dislike Nomzamo as much as I did and actually have a lot of respect for Paul Menel who has a great way with words. No Love Lost and Human Nature are certainly serviceable tracks although perhaps predictably I prefer the Forever Live versions with Nicholls

I like IQ but need to hear more of them. I kind of lost track of them.
Also, I thought we weren't allowed to post full albums on here.

I completely understand Richard. As I said, Nomzamo was my introduction to IQ, and as an 18 year old rock fan, who didn't really know what prog was, it sounded new and amazing to my ears. I adored (and still do) both Menel albums, and was gutted when I finally saw them at The Marquee and they announced he and Tim were leaving and it was their last gig But knowing TFTLA and The Wake as I do now, I can completely see why IQ fans at the time were a little shocked at Nomzamo.... I was a little similar with Marillion - my first album was Season's End, as I knew the Fish singles but didn't like the band enough to delve in. But I was hooked by Hooks In You and The Uninvited Guest, and had enough money to buy albums by then, so became a fan when H took over. Only in about 2002 did I finally get Misplaced Childhood and realise what I'd been missing... The point at which you start to follow a band can have a massive influence on the way you look at them

^ I listened to the Nomzamo album again this morning and it sounds better the second time around, helped by the fact that I'm also a fan of Dire Straits and U2.

IQ do do some good songs, granted.
But i use to have the album Ever, fraid i sold it on in the end because i only liked the song Leap of Faith. Sold the CD on for about 7 or £8, and just paid for the download on amazon for that one song. Im a big fan of Arena, they are neo prog aswell. All i need is the album Pride, and i will have a consecutive album collection of theirs from their debut album to Contagion, their last good album. Im hoping that Damien Wilson will help the band to become good again.

Not a massive fan of IQ or neo prog, I guess, but I do have some time and some respect for this band. I like '...lush attic' and 'The Wake' and tend to psychologically group them with Marillion's debut. They have atmosphere and darkness, and a bit of a rough edge. I find some of their later releases with Nicholl's (Post Nomzamo era) to be a little too slick and polished. Te Nomzamo era, does little for me. Arty pop/rock that fails to stir the imagination. Apart from the debut and follow up, favourite albums would probably be Ever and Dark Matter. I completely lost interest after Martin Offord left, although I will check out Road of Bones after reading the rave reviews.
I've seen them live a few times. Certainly a good live band. |

I've only heard the Road of Bones which is one of my all time favorites, Resistance which is one of my kinda.... "meh" disappointment records, and Dark Matter which i'm just kinda lukewarm on. What's a good next step? I'm open to anything

Chopper was right about IQ. Their albums definitely deserve a second and third listen to be fully appreciated, although I doubt if I'll change my original ratings, which are already pretty high for a Neo Prog band.

I would've recommended Resistance as that's one of my favourite IQ albums, although I can tell you're resistant to that idea, so I'd recommend going right back to the beginning and having a rummage around in the Lush Attic, and in The Wake of listening to their first album, you could try their second album too.

In that case, I should avoid the Nomzamo album altogether.

Indeed, although I took to Dark Matter and Ever immediately. The Seventh House & Subteranea took several spins, as did the very early albums. One day I'll give Nomzamo and AYSC another listen. |

Think I might have been at one of those gigs as well and Andy Edwards was in the band? I find Are You Sitting Comfortably a very enjoyable album, some nice wry cynicism in the lyrics even if much of it is bit 'plastic' sounding admittedly. |

Yeah, we went with Simon Godfrey. Can't remember the venue, although I remember Hard-Fi were playing next door! I've seen them twice and Andy Edwards was on drums both times. Very good drummer, better than Paul Cook IMO. |

People shouldn't forget Seven Stories Into '98, a very interesting revisit of their first cassette album. Includes one of their all time best songs: It All Stops Here😎
